A freight forwarder, forwarder, or forwarding agent, also

known as a non-vessel operating common carrier(NVOCC), is a person or company that organizes

shipments for individuals or corporations to get goods

from the manufacturer or producer to a market,

customer or nal point of distribution.

NVOCC is a person or company who consolidates

dierent consignments for dierent importers in to one

consignment who delivers each cargo each consignee

as per the agreed terms and conditions.

STEP 0: 'porter situated in umbai, *"+*A has a

shipment to be eported to overseas buyer in +A* by

shipping in a full container load is not worth as the total3uantity and volume is too less to load in to a

container. 4his is called 5%5 shipment, means 5ess

%ontainer %argo shipment. !ere, 'porter contacts a

"#$%% or consolidator to accept shipments to move to

nal destination at +A*. 4he "#$%% accepts cargo.

STEP 2: $nce after receiving cargo from shipper afternecessary customs formalities, the freight forwarder

releases !ouse ill of 5ading !5 to the shipper. !ouse

ill of 5ading also is a negotiable document and

accepted similar to any ill of 5ading. "ormally !5

!ouse ill of 5ading is issued as per the terms and

conditions of ulti model 4ransport +ocument Act.

4he shipper in !ouse ill of 5ading is the eporter orshipper who delivers goods to "#$%% 6 freight

forwarder and the importer or consignee, the party to

whom the cargo has to be delivered by the said

"#$%% 6 freight forwarder.

STEP : 4he "#$%% 6 freight forwarder after receiving

goods from shipper, re-book the same cargo to maincarriers who are vessel owners. 4he main carriers, once

cargo received, issues ill of 5ading to whom the cargo

booked with him. 4his is called 5 aster ill of

5ading. *n a master bill of lading, the shipper will be the

"#$%% 6 freight forwarder who delivers the cargo to

main carrier and the consignee, the overseas

counterpart party of the "#$%% 6 freight forwarder whoreceives the goods from nal shipper.

STEP *: 4he said "#$%% accepts the 5%5 cargo from

other eporters also to make his container full. $ther

container. All the said procedures are with the

necessary permissions and under the supervision of

customs o:cials of respective country. 4his process of

clubbing shipments together is called ;consolidation of

cargo7.
