Which were their favorite Build-its?

Page 10: Final Data Summary - idin.org Colombia Data_small.pdfend of the summit, went through each theme and wrote down their “best practices. Given that Spanish was a requirement for this

What was built? Rainwater collection andstorage system

APRENAT: 51 organic coffee producing campesinofamilies, located in the municipality of Tibacuy, alongside of mountain of Quinini. They believe thattheir production of coffee should be based on theconservation of their land’s unique biodiversity and theinteractions of these systems.

Erratic rains: 30% of the association does not haveaccess to reliable and consistent sources of water. Thisleads to difficulties in the cultivation, production andtransformation of coffee.

Prototype: A system of rainwater collection andstorage, that harvests rainwater for both productionpurposes and family consumption.

Page 11: Final Data Summary - idin.org Colombia Data_small.pdfend of the summit, went through each theme and wrote down their “best practices. Given that Spanish was a requirement for this

What was built? Canoe repair andtransformation

Areneros: Sand extractors/sellers from the Island of theSun, alongside the Magdalena River in Girardot,Colombia.

Erratic rising/falling of the river: During high season, the sand extraction (their main economic activity)becomes unreliable.

Prototype: A detachable and retractable coveringsystem that lightly transforms their canoes (one of theirassets) to promote ecological tourism during thesummer seasons. It uses aluminum poles and aprotective, light covering.

Page 12: Final Data Summary - idin.org Colombia Data_small.pdfend of the summit, went through each theme and wrote down their “best practices. Given that Spanish was a requirement for this

What was built? Floating platform

Areneros Jr: 20 young members of the Areneros (seeslide before) community

Erratic rising/falling of the river: During high season, the sand extraction (their main economic activity)becomes unreliable.

Prototypes: A floating device made from guaduabamboo, hermetic tanks and threads from recycledplastic bottles to promote ecological tourism. Thefloating devices are able to withstand an approximateweight of 1,500 pounds and have dimensions of 67square feet – meaning that multiple people can embarkupon them at a time.

Page 13: Final Data Summary - idin.org Colombia Data_small.pdfend of the summit, went through each theme and wrote down their “best practices. Given that Spanish was a requirement for this

What was built? Weed excavator

ASOPROMES: A cooperative of 26 families of agro-ecological producers who bring their organic andecologically friendly products to market every Saturdayin the nearby city of Fusagasuga.

Excessive weed growth: The best alternative is to useagrochemicals to deal with the weeds, however theassociation stands firm with their organic means ofproduction.

Prototype: A weed excavator that consists of a jaggedcyclone with an adaptable handle, and is designed forcomfortable use over extended period of time.

Page 14: Final Data Summary - idin.org Colombia Data_small.pdfend of the summit, went through each theme and wrote down their “best practices. Given that Spanish was a requirement for this

What was built? Vertical farming withrainwater drip-irrigation

Finca el Dorado: A small single-family farm that isprimarily dedicated to the cultivation of coffee.

Inconsistent rains: Resulting in lower yields

Prototypes: An alternative agricultural production systemthat optimizes the use of water, inhabits a small spaceand uses appropriate low-cost technologies in efficientways to improve food security and resilience to climatechange. The prototype consists of a covered modularsystem of vertical orchards, which collects rainwater, anddistributes the water thorough drip irrigation. Using such asystem increases yields by approximately 2.7 – 4.4 timesas much in comparison to traditional farming practices forthe same area.

Page 15: Final Data Summary - idin.org Colombia Data_small.pdfend of the summit, went through each theme and wrote down their “best practices. Given that Spanish was a requirement for this

What was built? Bait cultivation system

Local fishermen: Located by the riverMagdalena in Girardot, Colombia.

Bait: Socio-environmental changes in the riverhas led to decreased cultivations of bait

Prototype: Home-based bait cultivationsystem incorporating the principles ofaquaponics and vermiculture to ensure thatprovision of bait can be consistent throughoutthe year – and non-reliant upon the river. Thesystem allows for various forms of bait –including small fish, worms and larvae.

Page 16: Final Data Summary - idin.org Colombia Data_small.pdfend of the summit, went through each theme and wrote down their “best practices. Given that Spanish was a requirement for this

What was built? Tumbling fertilizerproducer

Punto Verde: A family-owned organic restaurant, influencedby the concept of agroecology, that helps promote an agro-eco-tour where they highlight other farms and services inthe area.

Bochashi: An interesting alternative to agrochemical fertilizerfor the community. However it is quite difficult to produce –requiring a lot of rotating, at certain temperatures andhumidity, thereby exerting a lot of physical effort.

Prototype: A device that facilitates the processing ofbochashi. It can hold a capacity of up to approximately 440pounds, and more importantly, it can be used easily byanyone, including minors – thereby mitigating the difficultphysical effort associated with its production.

Page 17: Final Data Summary - idin.org Colombia Data_small.pdfend of the summit, went through each theme and wrote down their “best practices. Given that Spanish was a requirement for this

What was built? Soil and bio-fertilizermeasurement kit

Tierra Libre: A farm school that promotes knowledgesharing, agro-ecological training, environmental educationand participatory action research. The community has a bio-factory where production and research of organic resourcesmakes it easier to transition from conventional farming toorganic farming

Soil degradation: Approximately 40% of the surroundingterritories have some degree of soil and nutrientdegradation, thereby decreasing productivity.

Prototype: A low-cost, user friendly measurement kit thatmeasures the temperature and humidity in soil, bio-fertilizers, liquids and solids (such as bocashi or mountainmicroorganisms). Using a simple, micro-computer and copperfibers, the prototype allows for monitoring and controling ofthe multiple variables which affect soil degradation.

What was built? Diversifying the insides ofthe totumo fruit

Totumos: ASOMACREGYR is an association of creativeartisans in the Girardot region of Colombia, consistingof fifteen female heads of household. They mainlywork with the totumo fruit, transforming the outsideshell into cups, bowls and other handicrafts.

Pulp and seeds: Accounts for about 95% of the freshweight and is usually dumped without any treatment, generating methane in its degradation.

Prototypes: Two different tools that attempt to reusethe insides of the totumo fruit. The first machine worksas a press that extracts the fiber from the pulp andguts. The second machine maneuvers the fiber into afunctional paper-like material.

Page 19: Final Data Summary - idin.org Colombia Data_small.pdfend of the summit, went through each theme and wrote down their “best practices. Given that Spanish was a requirement for this

What was built? Versatile weed-whackingtools for Ojo de Poeta

Waia Sie: An agro-ecological reserve in Silvania,Colombia. It consists of 6 families that promoteagroecology, permaculture and biodiversity restoration(particularly in regards to the Bosque de Niebla).

Ojo de Poeta: An invasive weed species increasinglyaffecting their territories

Prototypes: Two different tools to facilitate in thecontrol and extermination of Ojo de Poeta (they extractmore of it, over less time and with less effort). Thetools have extendable hooks, and different systems ofretraction (through strings and belts).

How to improveCommunity

involvement/role“More thorough pre-communication so that they feeland understand the goal of the

summit; have them try toattend the whole summit (comeat the beginning and stay untilthe end; however, I understand

the difficulty in this), havelonger visits, and share the

previous IDDS work before thesummit with the groups.”

“The first visit was verydisorganized because the

community was not preparedto received us; it could beimproved by having better

communication andorganization with thecommunity leaders.”

“In our case, I felt as if thecommunity was not as

committed given that theproblem/opportunity identifiedwas not directly aiding them. I

feel as if they viewed thissummit as more of anopportunity to receive

something, rather than to co-create.”n=52

How to improveLearningandcurriculum

“To improve, I believe that itis possible to better integratethe theoretical learning withwhat physical thing we areworking on at the moment –looking for better ways to

connect the two.”

“The order and tidiness of theworkshop is something that

becomes disastrous as the dayspass, so there should be a

strategy for the participants tokeep it in order whenever they

can.”

“In terms of methodology, given time constraints, wewere not able to work in

depth on the design book, soit became a tool (that

although useful) that weweren’t able to work on

properly.”n=52
