    Preventing Back Injuries

According to recent labor statistics, more than one million workers suffer back injuries each year. The

survey showed that 80% of the back injuries were to the lower back and occurred while lifting load. Back

    injury produces pain and discomfort.

What must an employee do? Before lifting, take a moment to think what you're about to do. Always pay attention to the job.

    Do not become complacent.

Examine the object for sharp corners, slippery spots or other potential hazards. Know your limit and don't try to exceed it. Ask for help if needed or if possible, divide the load

    to make it lighter.

Know where you are going to set the item down and make sure it and your path are free ofobstructions. Then follow these steps.

    1. Stand close to the load with your feet spread apart about

shoulder width, with one foot slightly in front of the otherfor balance.

    2. Squat down bending at the knees (not your waist). Tuck your chinwhile keeping your back as vertical as possible.

    3. Get a firm grasp of the object before beginning the lift.

    4. Begin slowly lifting with your LEGS by straightening them. Nevertwist your body during this step

    5. Once the lift is complete, keep the object as close to the body aspossible. As the load's center of gravity moves away from the body, thereis a dramatic increase in stress to the lumbar region of theback.

    Safety tips

Remember, it is your hand or foot that you are working with.

Take a few extra steps to ensure that you go home with the

same number of fingers and toes that you came to work with .

    Dont use cylinders in unventilated

areas. Dont temper with safety devices. Keep the cylinder in vertical position

    and tie firmly with chain.

Do you know PPE is the

last resort in hierarchy ofrisk control?

    Hierarchy of risk control:

    Step 1- EliminationStep 2- Substitution

Step 3- Engineering controlStep 4- Administrativecontrol

    Step 5- Usage of PPEs

Hence, we should all try to

    overcome/ reduce the safetyhazard conditions.

Compressed gases present many serious hazards from asphyxiation toexplosion and fire. Handle it w ith great care.

    EARTH DAY

    Earth Day promotes environmental

awareness and calls for theProtection of our planet.

The April 22 Earth Day, founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson, was first organizedin 1970 to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet as well as toencourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution.

Some people prefer to observe Earth Day around the time of the March equinox.

In 1978, American anthropologist Margaret Mead added her support for theequinox Earth Day, founded by John McConnell. She stated that the selection of

the March Equinox for Earth Day made planetary observance of a shared eventpossible.

    WATER DAY

Water is also known as life. No living being can survive without water. Consideringthe limited availability of portable water on earth, UN has declared March 22 as

Water Day to create awareness for its conservation.

    Beat the summer Heat

Now that summer is fast approaching and the weather and

temperature is getting hot each day, we should take care that

we'll not be hit by summer diseases. Some common Summer

    Diseases:

    1. Sore Eyes

    2. Pneumonia

    3. Skin Rashes (Prickly heat, chicken pox etc.)4. Dehydration

    5. Heat Stroke

We can prevent these diseases and stay fit by taking a few simple precautions. I am

giving a few simple tips which might help U stay healthy and cool.

Besides drinking plenty of water, drink a lot of fluids to a

    dehydration. The ever-popular

    void

    uantity

    nt

nimbu pani or lemonade is an

excellent drink to feel refreshed. If you are cautious of

drinking lemonade, then the natural thirst-quencher is tendercoconut water. Tender coconut water contains sugar, fiber,

and proteins along with vitamins and minerals.

Eat a lot of salads and fresh fruits that naturally contain

water, like watermelon, cucumbers. Watermelon contains

nearly 92% water, up to 14% of vitamin C, small q

of vitamin B and potassium. Do not remain in empty

stomach and before going out to the sun, drink sufficiewater.

Avoid eating oily, fried, hot, spicy and extremely salty foods. The organic salt in fruits

and vegetables is retained in the body where as the inorganic salt after digestion needs

to be thrown out of the body for which more water is to be taken. Also avoid eating cut

fruit from vendors as it may have been exposed to flies and dust.

A bottle of drinking water and a hand fan in your bag is very helpful when you go out.

Use dark sun glasses to protect your eyes from the heat and harmful

    rays.

Wash your face and hands frequently. The evaporation of the water

will cool down the blood flowing through your veins.

Do not drink very chilled liquids when feeling hot. This may lead to a slight

constriction of the blood vessels in the skin and decrease heat loss, which is not

advisable when trying to cool down. Do not drink water immediately aftercoming from out side in the sun.

In spite of all precautions heat cramps/stroke may occur due to prolonged exposure to

sun/heat and towards end of workday. The symptoms are:

Painful intermittent spasms of abdomen and other voluntary muscles

    Profuse sweating

    Weakness/dizziness

    Head ache nausea and/or vomiting

    Paleness of skin

    Rapid pulse rate

Skin is cool and clammy with sweat. Body temperature may be normal orsubnormal

    Unconsciousness

First aid for heat cramps/stroke may vary. The best care is:

    Rest

    Move to a cool place

Loosen clothes and allow body to cool

Use cool wet rags to aid cooling Drink plenty of water (preferred) or electrolyte fluid

Ask for medical help if victim is unconscious
