The Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched its latest communication satellite

GSAT-29, which was put in its orbit by India’s heavy-lift rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch

Vehicle (GSLV-Mk III). The GSLV Mk III is the designated rocket for India’s first human spaceflight

proposed for 2022. This launch was a key test to the GSLV Mk III as it carried the GSAT-29 weighing

3,423 kg and placed it into Geo Transfer Orbit (GTO) just over 16 minutes into its flight. The GSLV

Mk III has so far undergone one experimental and one developmental flight and this flight was the

second developmental flight for the rocket. GSLV-Mk III -- which is three-stage vehicle with two

solid motor strap-ons, a liquid propellant core stage and a cryogenic stage -- is capable of launching 4

ton class of satellite to Geosynchronous Transfer orbit (GTO). GSAT-29 carries Ka/Ku-band high

throughput communication transponders which will bridge the digital divide of users in remote

places of India, including those in Jammu and Kashmir and North Eastern regions. The ISRO-make

also carries Q/V-band payload, configured for technology demonstration at higher frequency bands

and Geo-stationary High Resolution Camera.

IIT KHARAGPUR'S RESEARCH TO BOOST LPG DISTRIBUTIONIIT Kharagpur researchers have devised a decision support system to help maximise the LPG

connections in BPL (below poverty line) households. It is a first of its kind for analysis of a

national level energy policy. "A team of researchers, led by Manoj Kumar Tiwari of the

Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, has devised a decision support

system focusing on the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana for maximising the number of LPG

connections, particularly in BPL households. A decision support system (DSS) is a computer

programme that helps in making sound rational decisions using mathematical programming and

operation research techniques. "The DSS for such policies can provide us the exact values of

important parameters over the prescribed policy time period, which in turn will help us to take

important measures to ascertain the proper functioning (monitoring) of the policy towards the

desired goal. PMUY, launched in May 2016, aimed to provide five crore LPG connections by 2019

to BPL families with the support of Rs 1,600 to each family. The government has recently revised

the target to eight crore LPG connections by 2020.

IIT-MADRAS DEVELOPS PORTABLE COLD STORAGE DEVICEThe Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has developed a portable solar-powered cold storage

device with a 500 kg capacity for storing vegetables, and fruits, among other items. The device will

help farmers store their produce for sufficient time so that it does not get spoilt before it is sold,

thereby preventing wastage of agricultural produce. The first unit of the device, which provides

storage facility with temperature ranging between four and 10 degree celsius, was deployed at a

farm in Madurantakam in Kancheepuram district, around 80 km from Chennai, recently.

Vegetables, leaves, flowers and fruits can be stored for 24 hours in the device. Each device would be

enough for 5 or 6 acres of land or for a group of three to four farmers,” Each unit would cost between

Rs 5.5 to Rs 6 lakh and storage capacity could be scaled down based on requirement.

\ BEST PLACES TO TRAVEL IN NOVEMBER 2018

IN INDIA (PART 2)

5. Kutch, Gujarat – Lose yourself in “Khushbu Gujarat ki” in Rann Utsav

6. Ganpatipule, Maharashtra – Relax on the beachside

Among the finest places to visit in winter in India, the desert-scape of Kutch opens a wide window for photo ops,

as the bright colors of Gujarat come popping. The Rann Utsav (a festival that lasts for 2 to 3 months from Nov to

Feb) is where khushbu Gujarat ki (aroma of Gujarat) is most captivating. This is the time when you have a

chance to witness the essence of Gujarat. Right from the white desert in the full moon, historical marvels to

shopping for handicrafts, this event is nothing less than a much-awaited extravaganza.

There are many activities that one can choose to indulge in during the Rann Utsav, like paramotoring,

meditation, rifle shooting, stargazing, jungle safari, bird watching, and sightseeing, along with others.

As soon as monsoon gets going from the exit

door, Ganpatipule evolves into that

paradisiacal tropical getaway and that’s why

we have it on the list of places to visit in

November in India. Nestled in the beloved

Konkan region of Maharashtra, Ganpatipule is

praised for its gold-sand beaches, spiritual

legends and culture.

Hindu folklore says Lord Ganpati moved to

this place from his erstwhile adobe, Gule.

Pilgrims come from different regions to seek

blessings from 400-year-old Ganpati idol

placed at the foot of a hillock.
