A Message from the Principal:Happy Heart Month to all!
February is Heart Month, which is perfect for Valentines Day, February 14, 2011. HeartMonth conveys to all of us to eat right, exercise regularly, and to live, laugh, and love. This is notonly for us as adults, but for our children as well. It seems to convey to us that we need to try andhave a balanced life schedule, as much as possible. I need to heed that myself. Life becomes sobusy, so often. We forget to smell the flowers along the way!
Kindergarten registration for school year 2011-2012 begins on February 1 through February18, 2011. If you have kindergarten-aged children, be sure to register them during this time. Call
the school office, 689-1380, for specific questions regarding registration and requireddocuments.
Spring picture-taking is scheduled this month, Thursday, February 3, 2011 as well as ourSpring Book Fair, February 22 -28, 2011. There are several field trips planned for grades 1, 2and 6 during Februaryask your children.

What is IB? The International Baccalaureate offers three high quality and challenging educational programs for a worldwidecommunity of schools.
What does the IB offer? The IB develops and offers three programs of international education spanning the years from pre-kindergarten to pre-university. The programs can be offered individually or as a continuum.
The IB Primary Years (PYP), for students aged 3 to 12, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.
The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), for students aged 11 to 16, provides a framework of academic challenge thatencourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and tobecome critical and reflective thinkers.
The IB Diploma Programme (Diploma) is an academically challenging and balanced program of education with finalexaminations that prepares students for success at university and in life beyond, normally for students aged 16-19.
Disclaimer We are not an authorized IB school. We are applying to become a candidate school. Once
we are a candidate school, we will be working towards becoming an authorized IB school.
IB Learner Profile - Each month we will highlight the IB Learner Profile. Thismonth we would like to highlight being a risk-taker.
A risk-taker:
Willing to try unfamiliar genres and information skills Shows confidence when sharing information
Dares to ask questions, share own ideas and opinions
Solves problems in different ways and never gives up
How you can help develop risk-takers:
Make sure your child understands the difference between being a risk-taker bytrying new things and doing things that are dangerous.
Encourage your child to play a new sport, try new food or learn how to dosomething new.
Provide a safe place where your child can talk about trying new activities and
reflect on how it felt after he/she tried something new. Share with your child when you have been a risk-taker and take time to explain
your opinions and convictions.
Make sure you provide positive feedback when your child attempts to dosomethin new.

Ewa Long Ago
On January 14, the third graders had the opportunity to have a guest speaker talk about
Ewa and its local history. This wasnt just any guest speaker; it was the principal of Ewa Elementary
School! What a wonderful primary source!
Stanley Tamashiro, who for 10 years was principal at Ka'imiloa Elementary School in 'Ewa
Beach, graduated from 'Ewa Elementary School in 1967. His late father also was an 'Ewa Elementary
School alumnus, graduating in 1934. He has seen and remembers a lot of his childhood growing up in
Ewa.
Mr. Tamashiro said he took the principal's position when it became available as a way to
return to his roots. He spoke about the plantation fields, what school life was like; and many issues
students are faced with everyday.
Mr. Tamashiro shared his childhood experience of growing up on the plantation in Ewa. He
also showed students a map of what the area looked like in the past; thus allowing students to see
that their house, or the house of their friends, previously may have been a sugar cane field. He
also showed the students black and white photos of the cane fields and plantation life.

The smart third graders planned and came up with terrific questions for Mr. Tamashiro and
they learned a lot about his perspectives on Ewa long ago and today. Some of the questions that
were asked:
-Did you feel safe growing up?
-Was bullying a problem long ago?
-When did you notice traffic starting in Ewa?
-When did you notice graffiti in Ewa?
-What do you think we can do to help with traffic in Ewa?
-Do you think people drive carelessly?
-Do you think homelessness is a problem?
-When did you notice littering and vandalism?-Do you think J. Campbell HS students need AC classrooms?
As Mr. Tamashiro smiled and answered the eager students, it was such a great way for the
students to inquire more information from him. They learned a lot about the area they live in and
how communities change over time. Thank you, Principal Tamashiro, for being a wonderful primary
source for our third graders! The students had a great time! Feel free to come back!
