Year 7 Survival PackFull Task Description:

The Department of Education needs your help! They know that the journey from grade 6 to year 7 is a really significant change for students. The Department is putting together teams of experts to create a year 7 survival pack to help grade 6 students with this important transition. This pack will be distributed to all grade 6 students across Victoria.

You will be working in teams of four to research what to expect from the journey to high school and how to best prepare for it. You will then create an informative and practical survival pack that will provide grade 6 students with the tools and confidence to have the best possible Year 7 experience!

You will be pitching your survival pack to the Department of Education with the aim of convincing them that your survival pack is the most useful for all students. They know that there's no one more qualified to undertake this task than grade 6 students. That's you!

Timeframe: 7th of December (3rd last week of term 4)

Audience:

The target audience for the survival pack is grade 6 students. However the pitch will be targeting the Department of Education. Therefore you will need to carefully consider the language you use when addressing each of these audiences.

PART ONE: The Survival Pack

There are a number of aspects to consider when people are going through changes in life. The pack should contain items which support the four aspects of self you will learn about through this I-Quest: How we think (cognitive)How we feel (emotional)How we get along with others (social)How our physical health effects our ability to experience life positively (physical)

The pack MUST include:

An introductory sheet that welcomes the student and outlines the items in the pack and how to use them.

At least four items that focus on the cognitive, physical, emotional and social aspects (you will learn about these during the I-Quest).

A variety of mediums must be used when creating the pack items (e.g. you may not create four info sheets), For ideas about the kind of mediums you may use, see the next section “The Pack MAY include”.

PART TWO: The Pitch Once you have designed and created your pack you will need to pitch it to the Department of Education.

You will need to create a 10-15 minute presentation designed to convince them that your pack is the one they should choose to produce and distribute to all grade 6 students across Victoria.

STEP 1: Plan for Pitch

In your groups, discuss what elements you will be using in your pitch. Here are some points to consider:

What are the positive features of your pack? How does it stand out from other help packs? If you do not believe in the quality of your product, it‛s going to be very difficult to sell it!

What are the appeal elements you will use in your pitch presentation?

What type of language will you use? Formal? Casual? Consider your audience: The Department of Education panel.

What type/s of persuasive text will you use? Remember this includes media, art, theatre, music, visuals, not just words.

STEP 2: The Pitch Performance

Requirements:

All members of the group must present/speak/perform in their pitch. Make sure this is delegated equally.

You will present in front of a mock panel (your class buddies!). Be prepared to be asked questions by the panel about your product.

The Pitch should go for a maximum of 10 minutes. This does not include peer question time.

Make sure you inform your teacher of any resources/materials that you may need prior to the presentation. Provide a checklist for the teacher. For example: Laptop/ICT tools, iPod, stationery for posters/artwork.

Must haves:

Final product of survival pack

Digital visual aides to support your presentation (e.g. Powerpoint, Prezi)
