LUBBOCK CULTURAL HERITAGE CENTERThis project is a Cultural Heritage Center for Lubbock, Texas. Mckenzie Park was chosen for the site location, where the center could benefit from water front views. The building program was to include an area for offices, educational rooms, archive space, exhibit space for cultural art, and a grand hall for multi-purpose uses for the community as needed. This design was developed in order to create an open view to the great plains of Lubbock. This reflects Lubbock’s cultural heritage by visually embrac-
SITE ANALYSISThe site is located in Lubbock’s Mckenzie Park. Canyon Lake runs along the south end of the site, to the west is a baseball park as well as the Lubbock Agricultural Museum and the Lubbock Windmill Museum. To the east of the site there are bike trails, a playground, and fishing sites, and to the north are small convenient stores. Most traffic runs on the west and south streets, therefore parking access will be connected to the west street to avoid vehicles near people along the lake side. The site slopes downward towards the water, permitting an optimal viewpoint from the south side of the building towards the water and landscape beyond. This is a prime location for a Cultural Heritage Cen-ter because of the recreational parks and facilities around it, as well as the beautiful natural features around it. This project will magnify the already existing communal use of this site, and will add to the existing line of historic buildings neighboring the site.

ing the “Llano Estacado” landscape discovered by Coronado in 1540 on his quest for the “City of Gold.” The North and South facade are of glass with a wood-post solar screen, as well as the hallway connecting parts of the facility. This transpar-ent design is also effective in creating a clear visual guide throughout the exhibits, so that guests are able to preview what is ahead and determine their next des-tination. The building’s design strives to administer the cultural heritage of Lub-bock by providing displays of historic information inside and outside, and providing a place for the Lubbock community to participate in private and public events.

CANYON LAKE PERFORMANCE THEATREThe theatre is a place where the imagination is free to discover and engage in unknown stories, characters, and experiences. The “unfolding” of a play is an inter-esting concept in the way that a performance invites an audience into its story, and reveals the elements that create it. In architecture, this is something of importance in

Instead of having the plan as an open concept, where you are always aware of what is next and have straight, ob-vous paths to get there, what if the planunfolded or revealed itself by having paths that lead you to something unexpected, or if the levels of the plan followed the contours of the site to “unfold” the spaces through elevation and plan?

HIGH COTTON HOMELESS REHABILITATIONLINK Ministries is an organization that works to provide shelter, help, and other re-sources to Lubbock’s homeless population. This project is a continuation of their work in downtown Lubbock, where they have re-used existing cotton gins to cre-ate facilities for recreational activities. The project is based on meetings with LINK Ministries and other involved organizations where needs and suggestions were shared and incorporated into the design. The site is divided by a railroad track, with the north site being designated to residential shelters for the home-less, and the south site for recreational facilities that gain revenue for the project.
CONCEPT DESIGN
The project metaphorically resembles a desert oasis. The methods in which the spaces are designed follow the intrinsic qualities of the relieving, shelter-ing, fertile, healing, and invigorating environment that the oasis represents.
OASIS:1. A small fertile or green area in a desert region, usu-ally having a spring or well.
2. Something serving as a refuge, relief, or pleasant change from what is usu-al, annoying, difficult, etc.

)The idea behind a homeless rehabilitation project is to provide not only shel-ter for people without homes, but also an environment in which they can regain their dignity, as well as their identity. With a “step-up” program, the homeless can move off the streets and transition into progressively private spaces depen-dent upon their behavior and involvement in the program. The north site will pro-vide medical attention, career and life skill training, childcare, and green spaces. These provide mental and physical healing, as well as the resources needed to get back on their feet. The south site is more community based in which recre-ational facilities such as an indoor paintball, skate park, outdoor concert stage, and more provide an invigorating space for anyone that wants to take part.

THE NORTH CAMPUS HAD ONE EXISTING, ORANGE AND WHITESTORAGE FACILITY WHICH WAS CONVERTED INTO A CAFETERIA, AND EXPANDED WITH THE ADDITION OF SECURITY AND ASSESSMENT OF-FICES, AS WELL AS SOME RESIDEN-TIAL SPACES. GREEN SPACES ARE INCORPORATED THROUGHOUT THE SITE FOR MENTAL HEALING SPACES.

THE SOUTH CAMPUS HAS EXISTING COTTON GINS THROUGHOUT THE SITE. BY USING THE EXIST-ING STRUCTURE AND REMOVING THE SIDING OF THE GINS, THE SITE CAN BENEFIT FROM A CONCENTRATED AREA FOR AN EVENT CEN-TER. THIS SPACE WILL BE USED FOR A RES-TAURANT, GRAND HALL, OUTDOOR CONCERT STAGE, AND INDOOR PERFORMANCE THEATRE.
THE SOUTH SITE ALSO HAS AN EXIST-ING RED BRICK BUILDING THAT WILL BE RE-USED FOR RETAIL, AND A TRAIN-ING FACILITY FOR LIFE SKILLS AND JOB TRAINING. THE EXISTING RAISED PLATFORM AROUND THE BUILDING WILL SERVE AS AN OUTDOOR PATIO TO ENCOURAGE A SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE.
BORDEAUX WINERYBordeaux’s urban development is predominately of stone facades. The goal of this project is to respect the existing atmosphere, but to create something unique by using familiar material in an unfamiliar way. The form of the project answers to the existing materiality in the commonality of stone through use of a mar-ble facade. However, the design creates a unique and modern statement through the use of a 3D Router to mold the stone into a liquid-like facade. Introducing green space to the stone atmosphere of Bordeaux is another goal of this project,restoring the vegetation that was lost in the area’s development. A lush pathwaY and courtyard will invite pedestrians in to the site and a green roof will be located on the third level for visitors and employees to enjoy.
