BRUSSELS: PATCHWORK CITY
where radical HETEROGENITY co-exists next to a radical NEGLEC TION OF DIFFER-ENCES
a SURREAL LANDSCAPE of dreams, char-acterised by fragmentation, multilinguism, hybridity

PATCHWORK CITY 1. ANALYSIS
INTERMEDIATE SPACE concept
Urban planning examples from the past have learned us that too often a RADICAL SEPARATION or a MEANINGLESS MIX is created when acting upon verry different cultures and situations happening on the area of intrest. Within Brussels there exists a highly fragile relation between these different living environements.
A RADICAL SEPARATION in the Brussels’ context would lead to more ISOLATION and different ways of DISINTEGRATION of the neigh-bourhoods. A MEANINGLESS MIX would cause the LOSS OF IDENTITY of the different neighborhoods and could result in a space where nobody feels home anymore.
We obtain a way of CONNECTIONS between the different neighborhoods WITHOUT THE LOSS OF IDENTITY. This goal will be accieved by interventions in the spaces IN-BETWEEN the existing neighbourhoods. These spaces, accesible by anybody, will become the MOTOR TO THE INTEGRATION and will RE-CONNECT in between the neighbourhoods as well as to the city center.
?
1. ANALYSIS
borderThere are different BOUNDARIES inbe-tween the Brussels neighborhoods, going from tactile transitions to sharp edges.
“Somethimes you can only see things when all that is familiar has disapeared. The body has moved itself in a way that also changed perception. Only later we notice that we crossed a boundary. What was even just before now has moved meaning.”
‘The city isn’t here. Making boundaries visible’, Paul Blondel
intermediate spacesIN-BETWEEN SPACES are places which fall in between the ordening character of the urban fabric. (SPACIAL) As well as situations which fall out of the nominal social order, a ‘free-zone’ where everything is possible. (SOCIAL)
INTERMEDIATE SPACES are spaces which take over the characteristics of a transition zone. It’s a zone of experiment, where unstable compo-nents of the urban dynamic get a place. They make conflicts visible and transform them into something new, by social and spacial RE-CONNECTION
intermediate functionsThe CONNECTION between the individ-ual neighborhoods and the in-between area happens by intermediate functions. They are differentiated katalyst projects which form the MOTOR FOR THE INTER-MEDIATE SPACE and integrate in the so-cial and spatial context of the neighbor-hoods. The intermediate functions act as a GATE from the varied public at the in-termediate space to the defined public of the neighborhood. This happens with a lot of attention to PRESERVE THE CHAR-ACTERISTICS of the spaces.

CURATE: BRING READABILITY
Some intermediate places lost their MEANING, lost their READABILITY by transformations in the city network
Reintegrate: Still existing but lost meaning, function, or interrupted ex. Old West station/ Abatoire/ Historical roads (Extension Ribaucourt street through T&T site, Antwerpstreet, ...)/ ...
Integrate:
Replaced functions ex. South + North + West station/ ... Demolished sites ex. North quarter/ Demolition metro network Molenbeek, Anderlecht/ ...

present materials
chuff, (natural) stone, concrete, gravel, steel, glass
the environment is full of GRAY materials and ‘GREEN’ spaces with grass and other vegeta-tion. The overall view is very monochrome and the absence of human activity is very visible in the representation of colour.
proposed materials wood, used as building material warm energetic colours.
because warm and energetic colours are lack-ing in the environement we would like to use them to highlight certain areas. We will use ORANGE because out of a research we found that this contrasts most with the environement. The missing of WOOD in the environment’s materials will make this our material of choice for any new additions.

1. ANALYSIS
How can we (re)connect the neigh-bourhoods within the city?
The use of a METHOD will make the intermediate space READABLE. This space will connect to all differ-ent neighborhoods and rooms with their own atmospheres. The interme-diate space will act as a CORRIDOR through the city, where everybody feels at home.
The actual connection between the urban corridor and the neighbour-hoods will happen through the ROOMS, which are the intermediate functions. They will be planned in di-alogue with the neighborhood’s at-mospheres. Because of that, they will be verry different from eachother.
The urban corridor will CURATE the culture of differences, which is made visible in the rooms by acivities which COORDINATE cultural and social identity.
2. STRATEGY URBAN CORRIDOR
repetitionA key characteristic of the urban corridor, which will lead people through the inter-mediate space and will curate the urban functions is the REPETITION OF ELE-MENTS: in orange colour and woorden forms. This repetition wil MAKE THE CITY READ-ABLE.
The urban corridor exists of FOUR PLANES embracing the passengers. At certain area the corridor is fragmented, depending the current situation and the connections between the intermediate space and the different quarters.
The corridor will exist of elements to pro-vide the BASIC NEEDS of its users and passengers, such as lightening, sitting facilities, overlooking and orientation.
