CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BRIEF DESCRIPTION
THIS IS A STATION IN THE CENTRAL SUBURBAN RAILWAY LINE. THIS STATION IS PREDOMINENTLY CHOSEN TO STUDY AND PREVENT
TRESPASSING THAT OCCURS LARGELY AT THE SOUTHERN END OF THE
PLATFORMS.
THIS STATION HAS IN ALL TEN PLATFORMS.
THANE EAST AS WELL AS WEST IS LARGELY POPULATED .
THERE ARE 3 FOBS. ONE AT SOUTHERN END WHICH CONNECT THANE EAST TO
THANE WEST AND OTHER AT MIDDLE OF PLATFORM LENGTH AND THIRD ONE
AT NORTHERN END.
THERE ARE TWO TICKET WINDOWS.
THE MAGNITUDE OF TRESPASSING PROBLEM AND THE REASONS OF TRESPASSING
AT THANE STATION HAVE BEEN STUDIED AT INCEPTION REPORT STAGE WHICH HAVE
BEEN PRESENTED TO MRVC AND ALSO SUBMITTED AS INCEPTION REPORT.

EVEN DURING NIGHT TIME THE AMOUNT OF TRESPASSING IS HUGE.

1.3 REASONS OF TRESPASSING AT THANE
TO SAVE TIME AS THE WIDTH OF THE PLATFORMS ARE INSUFFICIENT TO CATER
TO THE OVERCROWDING ON THE PLATFORM ITSELF WHICH RESULTS INTO LOT
OF TIME BEING WASTED, IN REACHING THE PROVIDED FOB.
THE HEIGHT OF THE FOB IS VERY HIGH AND HENCE IS UNCOMFORTABLE EVEN
FOR NORMAL HEALTHY PERSON TO USE IT.
NUMBERS OF FOBS ARE INSUFFICIENT TO CATER TO THE PEAK HOUR NEEDS OF
PASSENGER TRAFFIC LEADING TO LOT OF OVERCROWDING ON THE FOB ITSELF.
LACK OF FACILITIES FOR PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED PEOPLE & SENIOR
CITIZENS; LIKE ESCALATOR, RAMP, ETC.
SMALL RAMP AT BOTH THE ENDS OF THE PLATFORM ALSO ENCOURAGES
TRESPASSING.
LAST MINUTE ANNOUNCEMENT OF CHANGE IN THE PLATFORM SCHEDULE FOR
ARRIVAL / DEPARTURE OF THE TRAIN.
HUMAN SETTLEMENT ALONG THE TRACK ALSO LEADS TO REGULAR
TRESPASSING BY THE INHABITANTS.
EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES LIKE MEDICAL EMERGENCY, PERSON WITH
HEAVY LUGGAGE, ETC. LEADS TO COMPULSORY TRESPASSING.
RAG PICKERS ARE REGULAR TRESPASSERS.
INADEQUATE HEIGHT OF FENCING BETWEEN TRACKS ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO
JUMP FROM PLATFORM ON TO THE TRACK & CLIMB THE FENCING TO REACH THE
OTHER PLATFORM, THUS LEADING TO SERIOUS TRESPASSING.
PEOPLE TRAVELLING WITHOUT PROPER TICKET TRESPASS IN ORDER TO AVOID
T.C.
PEOPLE ARE ACCUSTOMED TO TRESPASSING AND IT HAS BECOME A DEFAULT
BEHAVIORAL TENDENCY.

WORKED OUT KEEPING IN MIND THE FOLLOWING 5 MAIN POINTS.

3.2 SOLUTIONS TO DISCOURAGE TRESPASSING AT THANE :
1. PROVIDE RAILING BETWEEN PLATFORMS 2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 & 9/10.
TO PREVENT TRESPASSING BETWEEN THE PLATFORMS.
2. PROVIDE GREEN PATCH IN TRIANGULAR PORTION AT NORTHERN END OF
PLATFORM 7/8.
TO PREVENT TRESPASSING BETWEEN THE PLATFORMS.
3. PROVIDE R.C.C. COMPOUND WALL BEYOND PLATFORM NO.1 AT NORTHERN END
ON EAST SIDE TILL VITAWA.
TO PREVENT TRESPASSSSING FROM THANE EAST TO PLATFORMS 7/8 AND 9/10
4. WIDEN 2ND FOB AT NORTHERN END TOWARDS KALYAN SIDE TO PROVIDE
ADDITIONAL CONNECTION TO ALL PLATFORMS LANDING ON THE NORTHERN
SIDE.
TO DIVERT THE PUBLIC FLOW ON BOTH SIDES OF THE FOB AND PREVENT
CROWDING ON THE FOB.
5. TICKET OFFICE ON WEST SHOULD BE DEMOLISHED AND PROVIDE FOB ABOVE IT,
WHICH WILL HAVE EXIT THROUGH STAIRS ON PLATOFRM NO.2,3/4,5/6,9/10 & ON
PLATFORM NO. 7/8 THROUGH ESCALATORS/LIFTS.
TO DIVERT THE PUBLIC FLOW, AND PREVENT OVERCROWDING ON THE EXISTING
FOBs AND PREVENT TRESPASSING BETWEEN THE PLATFORMS.
6. PROVIDE GREEN PATCH WITH BARRICADES AT NORTHERN END OF PLATFORM
NO. 3/4.
TO PREVENT TRESPASSING BETWEEN THE PLATFORMS.
7. PROVIDE R.C.C. BOUNDARY WALL ON THE NORTHERN END PARALLEL TO
PLATFORM NO.2 TILL CREEK.
TO PREVENT TRESPASSSSING FROM THANE WEST TO PLATFORMS 3/4 AND 5/6.
8. PROVIDE EAST-WEST FOB AT SOUTHERN END OF THANE STATION CONNECTING
PLATFORMS 1 & 7/8 BY RAMPS TO FACILITATE EASY FLOW OF HEAVY LUGGAGE TO SOUTHERN END OF PLATFORM 7/8
9. WIDEN EXISTING SOUTHERN FOB BY 6M.
10. WIDEN NORTH END PUBLIC FOB BY 2.4M AND PROVIDE LANDING TO PLATFORMS
3/4 & 5/6 AND CONNECT THE SAME TO 2ND
FOB FROM NORTH BY A SKYWALK.
TO PROVIDE DIRECT ACCESS FROM THANE WEST NORTH END BUS STOP TO ALL PLATFROMS AND
HENCE PREVENT TRESPASSING.
