MCH RESEARCH PROGRAM 257 COMPLETED PROJECTS 1994–96

The submission of a comprehensive final report within 90 days after comple-

tion of the project is a requirement for all research grants awarded by the

Maternal and Child Health Bureau. A file of such reports has been maintained since

the inception of the MCHB Research Program and is currently housed at the

National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health (NCEMCH). Reports

produced before 1980 are available only at NCEMCH, where they can be used as

a reference resource. A list of these reports is available upon request from NCEM-

CH, 2000 15th Street, North, Suite 701, Arlington, VA 22201, phone (703) 524-7802,

fax (703) 524-9335.

Final reports for MCHB research projects from 1980 to the present have been

filed with the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), which provides copies

to the public either on paper or microfiche. NTIS, an agency of the U.S. Department

of Commerce, is the central source for the public sale of U.S. government-spon-

sored research, development, and engineering reports. The law establishing NTIS

as a clearinghouse for scientific information directed that it be self-supporting; con-

sequently, the costs of NTIS salaries and operating costs are paid from sales

income.

In the listing that follows, final reports are presented in order by project num-

ber, corresponding in alphabetical order to the State of the grantee institution. (In

a few cases, the principal investigator and research project transferred to an insti-

tution in another state, so the project number and state do not correspond.) The

report number assigned by the MCHB Research Program indicates the year in

which the final report was received. For example, MCH/CCS-81/04 was the fourth

report received by the MCHB Research Program office in 1981.

The number needed to order a document from NTIS is the accession or order

number, a unique identifier assigned to each report catalogued by NTIS. Each

report available from NTIS is assigned a price code. Although the price code for

each report remains the same over the years, the price associated with each code

is subject to change. Standard and out-of-print pricing classification is based on the

year of publication; most reports produced more than 3 years ago are considered

out of print. As of December 1997, the prices were as follows:
