S T U D I O S & L E S S O N S
1-Studio 1 (Drafting & Basic design):
This course provides a hands-on introduction to the types of
drawings typically needed for design, and the principles of
the drafting process. Work through the drafting of a simple
orthographic view plan, section, elevations and details – and
touch on 3D drawings. In addition to the basic design and
organization principles.
No. of projects: Multiple
Expected educational return (Grading criteria): The student
should be able to draw all types of architectural drawings to
scale, in addition to learning the basic spatial organization.
2-Studio 2 (Methodology of design: Dimension + scale):
This course stresses the use of brainstorming to encourage
innovative ideas and collaborative design thinking to work
through each proposed idea and arrive at the best solution.
Meeting the needs and wants of the user is the most critical
concern. Design methodology also employs basic research
methods, such as site analysis and design response.
No. of projects: Multiple
Expected educational return (Grading criteria): The
student should know how to analysis a site, in addition to
developing a concept that responds to the site analysis and
conditions.
3-Studio 3 (Building components and Modular system):
This course emphases of the elements of a building such as
walls, doors and windows up the basic columns and beam
structure. The use of modular systems in design utilizing it
as the main factor to create space design plans, sections and
elevations.
No. of projects: 1 project
Expected educational return (Grading criteria): The
student should be able to understand and illustrate the
basic constructional elements of a building (footing,
columns, beam, floor and wall). To understand the various
proportions of a building such as the proportion of corridor
to a functional space using a certain modular system.
Examples: (Small residential unit) (Single use structure)
4-Studio 4 (Organization and Flexibility):
This course focuses on the organization of plans and section
and provides the architectural skills of dividing buildings
into interior spaces into various rooms that have their own
purposes. Organization in architecture ensures that all
components of a building function cohesively to achieve its
goals. To design a structure that could respond to any future
demands.
No. of projects: 1 project
Expected educational return (Grading criteria): The student
should be able to design cohesive and complex plans and
sections. The design should also adapt various functions
simultaneously or change of function over time according to
the user or site requirements.
Examples: (Educational Facility) (Medical Facility) (Mix use)
5- Studio 5 (Sustainability and building systems):
This course highlights the three main factors of
sustainability environmental, social and economic. Providing
the student with the needed skills to incorporate one or
all factors of sustainability within the design. In addition to
gaining the knowledge of the basic building systems such as
the mechanical heating and cooling systems.
No. of projects: 1 project
Expected educational return (Grading criteria): The student
should be able to apply and demonstrate at least of factor
of the three sustainability factors and the implementation
of the specified factor in the design. In addition the student
should accommodate the basic buildings systems within the
design, such as the location of the shafts and ventilation
machines.
Examples: (Central Library) (Hotel tower) (Residential Unit)
6- Studio 6 Context (Site, form and character):
This course emphases on the importance of context
sensitivity design. As any architectural project should
respond to its site surroundings in terms of the form,
character and identity. For instance the design could be in
harmony with its surroundings or in total contrast based on
the design respond.
No. of projects: 1 project
Expected educational return (Grading criteria): The
student should be able to study the site surroundings it
terms of facades and esthetics, hence determine a design
methodology and response that corresponds to the design
concept.
Examples: Office building or Institutional facility within the
historical district
7- Studio 7 (Real estate and urban design):
This course highlights the urban design as the collaborative
and multi-disciplinary process of shaping the physical setting
for life in cities, towns and villages; the art of making places;
design in an urban context. Urban design involves the design
of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes,
and the establishment of frameworks and processes that
facilitate successful development. In addition to its relation
with the real-estate market and values.
No. of projects: 1 project
Expected educational return (Grading criteria): The student
should be able design within a larger scheme and to relate
the design with the economic condition of the site. The
end product should express the principles of urban design,
the relationship between the buildings and the streets, in
addition the basic financial outcome of the project.
Examples: (Residential neighborhood development) (Mix
use urban development)
8-Studio 8 Thesis (Capstone)
The student should express all the academic experience that
was gained through all the previous knowledge in the thesis
graduation project.
No. of projects: 1 project (Set Project)
Note: The lessons are a consecutive learning experience,
hence the student should express and demonstrate all
the previous lessons in his current project. For example
in Studio 3 (Building components and modular system) in
addition to the current lesson he should also implement
Studio 2 (Methodology of design) + Studio 1 (Drafting and
basic design)
