DIRECTIONS IN BUSAN—PHRASES TO USEThere are basically 5 steps to giving directions to foreigners:1) OFFERING HELP/GETTING INFO: Ask them if they need help and where they want to go. Can/Could I help you? Do you need some help? Where do you want/need to go?

The foreigner might say: Could you help me find Somyon? I’m looking for City Hall. I need to/want to go to/find a theater. How can I get to Pusan station?

2) USING SUBWAYS/BUSES: Help them use subways/buses to get close to the destination. Make sure to tell them which direction to take.A1) SUBWAY: Get on subway line 2 (going to Somyon). Go towards Somyon. // Take the line 2 subway /to Dongnae/going towards Jangsan.A2) BUS: Get on bus # 1001. going towards Nampodong). Take bus # 83 (going towards Namchundong). B) TRANSFER: Transfer to line 3 (going towards Gupo). Transfer to bus # 42 at Pusanjin.**Repeat the above steps until you are close to the destination.

3) GET OFF: Tell them exactly where to get off. This is very important.GET OFF: Get off (the subway) at stop # 212. Get off at Myungnyundong station. Get off (the bus) at Dongnae.

4) STREET DIRECTION: After they get off the bus/subway, where do they go?Go out exit #2 & you’ll see Shinsegae in front of you.//After you get off, you’ll see Lotte Department Store on your right. You can’t miss it.(If you don’t know the exact location) Follow the signs to Shinsegae. // Ask someone, “Shinsegae odi-issuyo?”

5) SAYING GOODBYE: Say goodbye with good wishes. Being specific is better. Don’t just say good bye. It’s a bit abrupt/rude.A (better) Have a good time hiking/shopping/sightseeing! Goodbye. // B (OK) Have a good time in Busan/Korea! Goodbye.
