    General Rules for Victoria Iuris 15

    A Team shall consist of Five Members.

    The competition is open only for the

    students pursuing LL.B degree either of 3yrs

    LL.B course or 5years LL.B course.

    A team must compulsorily participate inminimum of 7 events.

    One person can participate in maximum of 5

    events only.

    Only one team per college will be

    entertained.

    Application shall be accepted on the firstcome first serve basis.

    All the fields in the registration form must

    be compulsorily filled.

    Last date for registration is 10thFEBRUARY

    2015.

    Registration fees is Rs. 4000/- The DemandDraft has to be drawn in favour of Principal

    S.D.M Law College, Mangalore. Payable at

    Mangalore. The name of the institution shall

    be written on the reverse side of the DD.

    Rules and regulations for the events

    MOCK TRIAL

    1.

    This is a group event.

    2.All the five members of the teams must participate

    in this event.

    3.The theme of the competition is the trial procedure

    in the courts/quasi judicial tribunals.

    4.The problem copy will be given after confirmation of

    registration.

    5.The teams must prepare themselves for the role of

    witnesses of both sides i.e. the plaintiffs and the

    defendants and also for the role advocates.

    6.A team must divide themselves into the plaintiff

    side and defendant side based on the problem.

    7.The format of the competition must be

    ALL IN ALL ADVOCACY

    1. All the competitions in this rounds are interconnected

    2.

    This event consist of 3 rounds i.e.

    A.Round 1: Client Counselling,

    B.Round 2: Trial Advocacy, and

    C.Round 3: Appellate Advocacy

    (Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals).

    A. Round 1: Client Counselling

    1.This is a group event.

    2.Two members make a team.

    3.All the teams will qualify for the next round i.e. Trial

    Advocacy.

    4.There is a separate prize for the Best team.

    5.

    The clients identity in terms of gender, age, health,appearance in terms of attire is immaterial. No

    views shall be expressed by the participants in this

    regard.

    6.The whole session is of 30 minutes.

    7.The clients for this round will be arranged by the

    organiser.

    This Round consists of 3 sessions i.e.

    Consultation

    Post Consultation

    Critique

    Consultation Session This session will be of 20 minutes.

    The time starts as a soon as the client enters the

    chamber.

    This time period must be used for inter alia

    consultation with the client. The participants are

    expected to elicit the facts and relevant details

    from the client. The time period may be extended at the discretion

    of the judges.

    Post Consultation

    In this round the participants are allowed to discuss

    among themselves.

    The discussions should be loud enough so that the

    judges are able to hear them.

    In this session the participants may discuss the

    course of action, the scope of the case, the

    research work to be undertaken etc.

    The time period for this session is 5 minutes.

    Critique

    At the end of the post consultation period, judges

    may ask the questions to the participants on the

    matters deliberated upon.

    The time period for this session is 5 minutes.

    B.ROUND 2: TRIAL ADVOCACY

    This is a group event.

    Two members make a team.

    The trained witnesses will be provided by the

    organizers.

    Problem for this round will be given on the spot. The identity of clients/witness in terms of gender,

    age, health, appearance in terms of attire is

    immaterial. No views shall be expressed by the

    participants in this regard.

    There shall exist no scope for any interaction

    between witness and the participating team

    before/after the commencement of trial. This is an elimination round.

    Based on the performance in this stage 8 top

    scoring teams shall qualify to the quarterfinals.

    The teams will be divided into plaintiffs/prosecution

    and defendants/defense based on the client allotted

    to them in the Client Counselling round.

    This Round has 3 stages viz.a.The Opening Statements

    b.The Examination stage

    c.

    The Argument Stage.

    a. The Opening statements

    In this stage each team shall get 5 minutes.

    The Plaintiff/prosecution must put forth their case

    and their contentions

    After the plaintiff/prosecution make their mark the

    defendant /defense advocates must put forth their

    stand for next five minutes.

    b. The Examination stage

    At the end of the opening statements of the both thesides the examination of witnesses will start.

    In this stage there shall be 2 stages 1. Chief

    examination 2. Cross Examination.

    Each examination will be for FIVE minutes only to

    examine each witness.

    The Participants must examine the witnesses and

    elicit the facts beneficial to them. Re-Examination of the witnesses is allowed only

    with the permission of Presiding Officers.

    c. The Arguments Stage

    This is the final stage of this round.

    In this stage each team will be given TEN minutes

    to put forth their final arguments.

    In their arguments the teams may include their

    findings in the examination stage for the support of

    their case.

    C. ROUND 3: APPELLATE ADVOCACY

    The Quarterfinals Semifinals and the Final round will

    be in the appellate stage.

    This will be continuation of the trial stage.

    Only the qualified team will move on to this stage.

    Every team member shall be allocated 30 minutes

    to present their case.

    There will be no trial stage continued and no

    witnesses will be allowed to examine. The teams in

    this stage has to argue in the appellate courts. The team member may apportion between

    themselves the time granted.

    The judges in their discretion may grant extra time.

    3. NEGOTIATION

    This is a team event.

    This is an independent event.

    Two make a team.

    The problem will be given half an hour before the

    event.

    There will be different problems for each round.

    The competition will be conducted in 4 rounds i.e.

    Preliminary Round, Quarter finals, Semifinals, and

    finals.

    The teams will be given 35 min for the preliminaryrounds and 45 min for the final round.

    The competition will be divided into 3 stages i.e.

    a.The Opening Statement ( 5min Each team)

    b.The Negotiation/ Argument stage (Total 15 min

    for both the teams)

    c.The Plan of action stage. (5 min each team)

    The time will be divided as 5 min for each teams forthe opening statement, next 15 min for the

    negotiation stage, and 5 min for each team at the

    end to brief about the plan of action.

    4. CELEBRITY ADVOCACY

    This is an individual event.

    Only one person from a team can participate in this

    event.

    There will be only one round.

    A participant will be given a controversial celebrity

    character and the participant has to defend the

    same.

    It is to be noted that the participant is just

    defending the character allotted to him as an

    advocate, he is not acting as the character. The selection of the character will be done prior to

    the competition by draw of lots.

    The participants must have to be well acquainted

    with the character allotted to them in the given

    time.

    The total time allotted per participant in this round

    is 10 minutes only. The time will be divided as 3 minutes for

    introduction of the character and his RECENT

    controversy.

    For next SEVEN minutes there will be questioning

    by the judges and the viewers.

    A participant will be judged on the basis of how well

    he is acquainted with the character and his

    response to the questions.

    The character allotted may be of national or

    international figures.

    5. LAW QUIZ

    This is an independent event.

    Only 1 team is allowed to participate.

    Two members make a team.

    There will be two rounds-

    1. Written round

    2. Oral Round.

    Only 6 teams qualify for the oral rounds based on

    their performance in the written round.

    The questions will be based on law and general

    knowledge/current affairs with special reference tolaw.

    Participants are not allowed to carry any materials

    such as reference books, laptops, mobile phones or

    any other electronic gadgets inside the hall.

    LEGAL DRAFTING This is an individual event.

    Only one participant is allowed per team.

    The theme of legal drafting will be proposed

    legislation.

    The time limit for this competition will be one hour.

    The topic for the event will be given on the spot. Participants are not allowed to carry any other

    materials.

    7. YOUTH PARLIAMENT

    This is an individual event.

    The participants are required to prepare

    arguments for and against the Bill.

    The participants shall speak for/against the bill on

    the basis of the draw of lots.

    This event comprises of 2 rounds.

    The first round will have each participant

    speaking for/against the Bill for 3 minutes. The

    participants are expected to make crucial

    recommendations on the Bill on the basis of theiranalysis.

    The arguments made by each speaker will be

    noted down by the moderator on the basis of

    which the discussions carry in the second round.

    The second round will have discussions between

    the members of ruling and the opposition parties

    moderated by the moderator. Criteria for the judgment include, Logical

    Arguments, Knowledge of law and facts,

    convincing skills reasoning, and the participants

    effort to maintain the decorum of the

    parliamentary session.

    The best parliamentarian awards will be given for

    a speaker from the ruling and the opposite party

    respectively.

    The decision of the Moderator shall be the final,

    no dispute with regard to it will be entertained.

    8. BAIL PETITION

    This is an individual event.

    Only one member per team can participate. The problem copy will be given after confirmation

    of registration.

    The problem is mainly based on the criminal law.

    The participants are expected to argue in the

    lower courts.

    The participants must acquaint with the facts of

    the case and must argue on behalf of the accused

    and the State.

    Each participant will be given 10 minutes of time.

    9. JUDGEMENT WRITING

    This is a team event.

    Two make a team. Participants will be supplied with the required

    materials to write the judgment.

    Participants must read the materials and write

    the judgment.

    Participants are not allowed to carry any

    materials.

    10.LAW ESSAY

    Only one member per team can participate.

    Duration: 60 minutes.

    The topic will be given 2 hours prior to the

    competition.

    Participants will be supplied with the required

    materials to write the essay.

    Participants are not allowed to carry any

    materials.

    11.LEGAL CROSSWORD

    This is a team event.

    Only 1 team is allowed to participate.

    Two members make a team.

    Participants will be supplied with the required

    materials to complete the crossword. Participants are not allowed to carry any

    materials.

    Duration: 45 minutes.
