INTRODUCTIONRoot crop washing machine is a machine that is used to clean off soil and other
foreign particles from harvested root crops before sorting, grading, weighing etc.
Root crops: carrot
Methods of cleaning root cropsstill or moving water , water spraying, use of rotary drum cleaner, brush and shuffle

PROBLEM STATEMENT It is a great challenge to small scale vegetable farmers when it comes to the issue of
how to wash their root crops such as carrots, potatoes etc. effectively and efficiency with minimum time requirement.
Normally the farmers in Ghana follow a traditional method of cleaning their harvested root crop by washing with hands using Water , sponge , salt or potassium permanganates
• A case study was made on these farms: • The University of Ghana Farm• Plant Pool Farm• Dworwulu Farm• Roman Range Farm

AIMS / OBJECTIVESAim• To develop a simple low cost manually operated root crop washing machine
which will effectively wash root crops.
Objective To design and fabricate a root crop washing machine suitable for small scale
farmers To determine the efficiency of the root crop washing machine. To compare the time required by the machine to wash crop effectively as
against the traditional methods.

LITERATURE REVIEW• (Ambrose & Annamalai 2013 ).Development of a manually operated
root crop washer

LITERATURE CONT.’D• (Ghuman et al 2014) .Designed & fabricated an automatic root washer using
wood planks for the drum. The drum was rotated by a motor.
• (Geyer et al 1999). Conducted a research on the Influence of the soil on loosening and cleaning factors. Effort required in washing root vegetables and potatoes relates to the adhesive between soil and vegetable surface.
• (Jayashree & Viswanathan 2010) . Reported that the bruise index increased with increase in operating drum speed for washing of ginger rhizomes.
