Becoming a parent can be bewildering enough, but sorting through the range of information available about washable nappies can be daunting. Your local washable nappy team are here to help. First, the good news....

BETTER FOR YOUR BABYWith washables there are no chemicals next to your babies delicate skin. Disposables use harsh chemicals to draw the moisture away from the surface of the nappy and to attempt to mask nasty smells. Washables are simply fabric, so you know everything is safe.

Bulkier nappies around your baby’s hips help provide support for their growing bones. A frog-legged position is optimum for babies hip development. More fabric

BETTER FOR YOUR FINANCESDisposables cost upwards of £1000. There is a huge range of choice involved in buying washable nappies, but a set costing £300 is a good mid-range nappy and will give you everything you need from birth to potty.

Use forums and second hand sites to grab preloved bargains. Increase your savings by using the same nappies on future children.

And the great thing? You never run out of nappies! There’s no added cost or bulk to the weekly shop.

BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENTWith washables, no poo goes into landfill. You just use a washable or flushable liner and flush it away or pop it on the wash with your nappies. Human waste in landfill sites cause greenhouses gases to form. (Poo should always be flushed down the toilet when using a disposable too).

Manufacturing disposable nappies already has a considerable negative impact on the environment, even before

Once you find the right nappy for you and your baby, washables are better at containing leaks so there are less clothes and bedding to wash.

they have reached a baby’s bottom. All nappies will have a n i m p a c t o n t h e environment, we can only do our best to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible.

Dispelling the myths

Have you been put off using washable nappies for a particular reason? Maybe someone has told you something that made you wonder if they’re going to work for you? Here is the truth as we know it! Try for yourself, then you’ll know if they are right for you.

The causes of nappy rash are varied, but a wet nappy won’t cause one on it’s own. Acidic poo mixed with urine is the most c o m m o n , w h i c h c a n b e exacerbated by i l lness and teething. However, once a rash has started, keeping your baby’s bottom as dry as possible will aid the healing process. Using a fleece liner to keep the skin dry, a good non-oily barrier cream and plenty of nappy-free time will all help! Many people find that their babies are sensitive to the chemicals in disposables and this c l e a r s u p o n c e t h e y t r y washables.

Finding the right washable nappy to suit your baby can be trial and error. However, once you find the right absorbency and shape, reliability is not an issue. Many parents tell us that washable nappies, particularly a two-part system, are less likely to leak than a disposable.

Washable nappies do not have to be changed more often than disposables. Absorbency can be increased by adding extra boosters into washable nappies. Using ones made of natural materials like cotton, hemp, or bamboo will increase absorbency.

Using washable nappies is not any more time-consuming than doing an extra load of washing every two days. You don’t have to use washables full time, and you can mix and match. Using just two washable nappies a day can save you £300 over the time your baby is in nappies.

Washing machine depreciation, regular detergents, and water usage costs add up to around £140 for two and a half years washable nappy use. Even added to the cost of your nappies the savings are considerable.

North Somerset Nappy Alliance

Shiny nappy people!

The North Somerset Nappy Alliance was established in 2008. Running alongside the Waste Management Team at North Somerset Council, we aim to inform and educate our residents on the use of washable nappies. We try to remove all barriers that may stand in the way of any parents wishing to try washables for themselves.

We have several hire kits and can adapt any of them to fit any age of baby in nappies. You can borrow a full kit, or select a smaller range of nappies from the contents list on our website.

The kits are available to trial for two weeks. You get at least one of the four main categories of washable nappies, and there are about 20 nappies in the full kit altogether, along with wraps, liners, nappy nippas and a laundry bag; everything you need to have a go for yourselves!  We arrange for you to have a demo first so you can ask any questions you have. This usually takes place in Banwell with Emma, our Nappy Lady, or at your home.

No cost

There's also a comprehensive information pack included with the kit, and you can call or email me during the trial if you have any questions so there's plenty of guidance available. Most people wait until after their baby is born for a demo, although some people like to be organised and informed while still pregnant. It’s totally up to you.

If you would like to borrow a full kit, you just need to leave us with a deposit cheque for £100 as insurance as the kit is worth much more than that;   we don't bank the cheque, just keep it on file and return it when you return the kit. A smaller kit, up to 8 nappies/wraps, does not require a deposit.
