I would like to extend a warm welcome to readers of this Inaugural Issue of the newsle er of the Applied Science (AS) Discipline

in the Hong Kong Ins tute of Voca onal Educa on.

As a Discipline with close to 30 years of history in offering programmes in the health and applied sciences, we have grown over

the years to encompass three AS departments (Chai Wan, Sha Tin and Kwai Chung) which together deliver a total of 18 full- me

Higher Diploma programmes, a Diploma in Founda on Studies, and a number of in-service courses. This April, following the

successful periodic review exercise, our Discipline has been granted programme area accredita on (PAA) status in 9-sub areas

under health science and sciences. For degree-level provisions, we are ac vely expanding the range of collabora ve top-up

degree programmes and a new BSc in Environmental Management of the University of Northumbria at Newcastle has started

its first cohort in September. Two more top-up degrees in human biosciences and public health studies in partnership Coventry

University will undergo local accredita on in October. Another exci ng development is the first group of students coming from

the Higher Diploma in Medical Centre Opera ons who will be joining the Earn-and-Learn Scheme to study and work at the

same me commencing from this academic year.

This year will also see ac ve implementa on of a number of MOUs signed with overseas ins tu ons. We intend to beef up on

exchanges not just at the student level but also involving our academic staff. Among our local partners with newly signed or

renewed MOUs are the Human Health (H.K.) Limited, HK Hong Kong Veterinary Associa on and School of Public Health, HKU.

We can look forward to their support in providing industrial a achment opportuni es for our students. Demonstra ng

commitment to applied research, our academic staff con nued to be ac ve in applying for external grants with submissions

made to the Environment and Conserva on Fund (ECF), the Recycling Fund and the Health Care and Promo on Fund (HCPF).

Riding on recent technological innova ons, we have been working to introduce ver cal farming and 3-D food prin ng into our

programmes in environmental and food sciences. A new HealthTech Centre under the management of the AS Department in

Kwai Chung is scheduled to be opened in March 2017 to serve both teaching and community service purposes. These are but

some of the major highlights that I would like to share in advance and the next issue will be filled with more details about these

    developments.

We hope you would find this newsle er informa ve and please give us your comments and sugges ons for us to improve on

    future issues.

We look forward to your staying in touch with us.

HKCAAVQ has approved AS Discipline to operate courses under 9 programme areas (PAA status under the New Classifica on) for a validity period of 5 years star ng from the 2016/17 academic year.

2 New Full- me Programmes in AY2016/17In 2016/17 academic year, AS Discipline offers TWO new programmes:

Higher Diploma in Vision Health Care

This programme is offered in IVE (Kwai Chung). It intends to equip students with the necessary technical and professional knowledge and skills to enable them to pursue a career in private/public health care organisa ons dealing with contact/correc-

ve lens, paediatric / elderly vision, occupa-onal / public health and low vision care

    services.

    BSc (Hons) Environmental Management

A collabora ve top-up degree programme is offered through the School for Higher and Professional Educa on (SHAPE) in partner-ship with the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, UK. The programme is aimed at providing an ar cula on pathway for VTC IVE Higher Diploma graduates in environmental related areas. This is the 6th top-up degree programme in AS Discipline.

    ugh thener-e

Students are trained as suppor ng staff for eye care services in private and public sectors.

First AS Earn-and-Learn Programme in AY2016/17Due to pressing need for frontline personnel in the private healthcare sector, AS Discipline launched an Earn-and-Learn programme HD in Medical Centre Opera ons (AS314422), in partnership with Quality Health-Care Medical Services Limited, and SureCare Medical and Health Network, star ng this academic year. The scheme serves to provide a stable manpower supply to meet the opera onal needs of the companies and also to nurture qualified and mul -skilled staff for the sector.

    VTC-funded Research Ac vi es

A one-year research project led by Ms. Esther LO (right) and funded by the Department of AS, IVE (Chai Wan) had been conducted to screen the prevalence of an bio c resistance in the pathogenic indicator, Escherichia coli (E.coli) in Hong Kong environmental water samples. Results show that 82% of E. coli isolates exhibited phenotypic resistance to at least one examined an bio cs while 60% carried at least one of the an bio c resistance genes tested. Around 66% of isolates showed resistance to more than one an bio c. High prevalence of an bio c resistance recorded in this study indicated that environmental water represents a huge reservoir of microbiota harboring an bio c resistance genes.

The research results were presented in the 8th Interna onal Conference on Marine Pollu-on and Ecotoxicology (ICMPE 8) held in the University of Hong Kong in June 2016. The IVE

student responsible for the poster presenta on gained valuable exposure through the interna onal conference and had ample communica on opportuni es with other research-ers sharing similar interests.
