Staying ConnectedBy Linda Harvey, [email protected] I love having a daughter. I love my son too, but this is about mothers and daughters. Kathy lives in Marietta, GA and we text, call or email almost daily. We’ve had an online scrabble game going for over 10 years and we’ve played online Words Free for longer then I can remember. We call each other for recipes and sometimes for advice, mostly just to talk. I do love that girl! I love the woman she’s become. The significance of writing about the love of mother & daughter is …to talk about other mother and daughter teams we’ve had in HP. On two previous Mother’s Day issues we had articles about 4 mother & daughter pairings. Our lovely pairings: Marci Bevilacqua and her mother Santina who was the first to pass, Maria Sizemore and her mother Elvira McCormick, who also passed away, Cheryl Dolenc and her mother Margaret Flanagan …and Nancy Hoit and her mother

Margaret Flanagan and Cheryl Dolenc at a recent luncheon for Margaret, hosted at the Club by The Heritage Hooters Golf Group.

Margaret, Nancy Hoit and Elsa Kappler at Margaret’s 90 birthday party.

Elsa Kappler. Both Nancy and Cheryl had made the decision, along with their mothers, to move the moms to facilities, where they could get that extra bit of care. We all know it was a life changing decision for both mothers and daughters. Time moves on… and today, after I sent this article to the publisher, I received the news that Elsa, Nancy’s mother, 95, passed away this morning, June 11. Elsa was a lovely woman who, up until a few years ago, took long walks with her walker (at a good pace), loved watching tennis on TV (a game she used to play), laughed easily and was fun to be with. Time moves on… We are still blessed with Margaret, 91, who has moved to an independent living facility. Cheryl and Margaret know the decision is a good one and Margaret is looking forward to meeting new friends and being more

active. She doesn’t knit much anymore but she is a “Certified Master Knitter” and will be able to teach others (as she has here in HP) and she enjoys playing games. She will be close by so Cheryl can visit her often – and the rest of her friends can too. Time moves on….but the love of Mother’s and Daughter’s never changes.

As we move into the extreme heat of summer, things are a bit quieter in Fort Myers and at Heritage Palms. Even with most owners away, and a great reduction in overall traffic at the Club, our staff will remain very busy working on the numerous projects now underway. Major projects taking place this summer include:• Conversion of Sabal holes 6-15 to Celebration Bermuda

grass. Planting of Celebration grass took place the first week of June and we’re now already four weeks into the grow-in process. Substantial coverage of the new turf is expected in six to eight weeks, with an anticipated opening in early October.

• Driving Range Renovation – the installation of the bulkhead was completed the 2nd week of June. This has added significant area to the driving range tees. A new putting green has been built on the far right side of the range, and grow-in of the range and putting green is well underway.

• Maintenance Compound – Phase II of the maintenance compound renovation plan is in progress. It involves the installation of a new fuel and equipment wash-down area, and much needed sheltered equipment storage.

• Lodge Renovations – Later in the summer the Lodge will receive a much-needed facelift with new wall finishes, carpet, and furnishings in the foyer and card room.

• Clubhouse Renovations – In September the Clubhouse will also undergo renovations, including new carpet, wall finishes, foyer furnishing in addition to renovations in both the Men’s and Women’s Locker Rooms.

• Pools – Pools 2-4 will be drained and refinished with new aggregate and finish tile as was done at the Clubhouse, Lodge and Pool 1 last summer.

• Street Lighting – street lights will be added, enhancing the visibility of the Six Mile entrance. This phase of this

From the GM…project will focus on lighting the area from the intersection of Six Mile to the guard house.

• Surprises Await - several other facility upgrades will be accomplished over the summer in addition to the routine cleaning, painting and repair projects scheduled throughout the off-season months.

As I have reported in previous articles, the Club is well ahead of plan and in excellent financial position through the

first half of the year. Real Estate sales within the community remain strong and at this time there are currently only six living units, less than ½ percent, delinquent in satisfying 2014 dues. While we are optimistic for a strong finish to 2014, management and staff will remain vigilant relative to our finances, recognizing that storms, unexpected facility replacements and other unforeseen events can quickly change our financial position.

Best wishes for a safe, happy and healthy summer.

A new national study is singling out Florida’s seniors for their unhealthy lives, in particular their love of alcohol and (maybe not coincidentally) their chronic health problems and struggles with mental health. The good news: Sunshine State residents who are at least 65 years old tend to be among the nation’s most physically active and least obese in the nation, helping to get Florida’s overall senior health ranking to the mid-level No. 28 spot. This report is courtesy of the United Health Foundation, the foundation arm of the insurer United Healthcare. Some highlights:• About 5% of Florida seniors report chronic drinking, defined

as 60 drinks/month for men and 30/month for women. • A little more than 25% of seniors are physically inactive

on a regular basis, compared to nearly 30 last year. Florida

FL Seniors Drink, Exerciseranks No. 5 nationally for its physical active seniors.

• Florida ranks the worst in the nation for its percentage of seniors with multiple chronic medical conditions (43.5%).

• Falls are less common here than in other states. Florida had a rate of 23.7% compared to the national average of more than 30%. Good weather and an absence of winter-season is one possible reason.

• The state ranks third nationally when it comes to patients using hospice care, instead of just staying in hospitals for that kind of treatment. This kind of information is useful for Lee and Collier

counties, where 65-plus residents respectively make up 25% and 28% of the populations.

Larry Albritton, a tennis professional on our Heritage Palms staff, is well known for his easy going demeanor, his exceptional teaching and coaching methods, and his top-notch playing ability. Larry’s a familiar friend to all on our courts, often substituting on the men’s Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning rounds and raising the level of play with his personal participation. Many times, he watches our Club’s league players during their Lee County matches, commenting later on what strokes worked well and how to best employ specifi c strategies during game situations. Having attended many tennis clinics and private lessons with Larry over the years, I was happy to chat with him and comfortable asking him some questions for this article, as I thought knew all about this quiet and humble staff member. With soft-spoken responses and with a bit of Southern “twang,” Larry Albritton surprised me with stories and little known facts about his former careers, his background and his goals for the future...all stated in Larry’s subtle, gentlemanly manner

married for 14 years and live in Fort Myers. Between the two of them...they have 6 children and 13 grandchildren. As a couple, they love to travel, kayak and fi sh. For about ten years now, Larry and Betty have traveled to Negril, Jamaica each year, where Larry works as a traveling pro at the Couples Resort. How long have you worked here?: “I’ve been at Heritage Palms for seven years and for two years before that, I was a

teaching pro at Naples Bath and Tennis Club.” Where are you from and what’s your background?: “I hail from Paducah, Kentucky and graduated from Paducah-Tilghman High School. I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from Auburn University and followed up with a Master’s Degree in Engineering Technology from Murray State University.” What was your former career? “I was a licensing engineer at a gaseous diffusion plant. Working for the government, my job was to help enrich low grade uranium used for fuel rods in nuclear power plants.” Then Larry added with a smile... “I also was an engineer/plant manager in the apparel industry, manufacturing women’s and children’s clothing for many years. It was a cut and sew operation in Tennessee, Texas, Alabama and Missouri.” (Larry, I learned quickly, is also a master of the understated.) How did you get involved in tennis? “I’ve always played tennis socially and recreationally, both single and doubles, since college, and I’ve always liked the game. Around 1990, I got serious about learning the game and attended the Van Der Meer Tennis Academy on Hilton Head Island to get my tennis teaching certifi cation. Once getting to that level, I began thinking about tournament play and working towards a national ranking/rating as a player.” I know you’ve coached tennis at the interscholastic level. Can you describe that experience? “I coached the girls and boys tennis teams at Paducah-Tilgnhman High School, in Kentucky, my own High School, from 2002 to 2006. At that time....there were some very promising players in school and their parents approached me and asked me to

consider coaching tennis, even though I wasn’t a teacher in the system. It was a very rewarding experience.” Larry mentioned that at the time, he was also grateful to also be able to coach his grandson, Tyner Dumortier, who not only was a great tennis player and athlete...but has since become a professional dancer/choreographer in New York City. What was most rewarding about coaching high school kids in tennis? “Watching them grow, change and mature...from freshmen to seniors.” For years now, Larry Albritton has been playing in the USTA National Senior Tournament program, where players of several age groups (50’s, 55’s, 60’s, 65’s) play against each other in open tournaments around the country. Here, in Florida, these tourneys take place in Sarasota, Naples, St Petersburg, and West Palm Beach, between January and March and include competition for national senior age-group rankings. Larry has been involved in these tournaments for many years...ranking as high as 26th (nationally) in singles, and several times, in the top twenty in doubles, with his frequent doubles partner, Frank Bova (from Pennsylvania and Paseo in season). What’s your personal tennis goal? “I would like to achieve a ranking of top four in my age group so that I could compete internationally with USTA support and sponsorship. I know of two local pros, Fred Drilling (Estero) and Larry Turville (St Petersburg) who have realized this dream and have competed in Europe in their age groups.” What advice would you give to aspiring tennis players, recreational and league players at Heritage Palms? “You’re never too old to learn something new...and ...have fun!!!”

From Ray & Fran Rhoton: Our grandson, Connor Johnston, came to Fort Myers to play in a USTA National Tennis Tournament, The Florida Open. He was accompanied by our daughter Kathy and our son-in-law Jeff, who live in Novi, MI, a suburb of Detroit. The Landings Golf & Country Club sponsors this tournament for the USTA’s best players, in the US and foreign countries. The matches were played at ten clubs in Lee County. There were 256 players involved; boys and girls divisions, ages 12, 14, 16, & 18. Connor played in the boys 16. Prior to the tournament we arranged two warm-up hitting sessions here in HP, one with Asst. Pro Jimmy Martineau and one with Director of Tennis Mike Lawver. We are so proud of Connor who placed 2nd in the singles and 2nd in doubles. By the way, Connor won another Southeast Michigan tournament. That entitles him to play in a big tournament in Indianapolis.

Post Cards From Home

From Chuck Rawson: Penny and I spent 3 weeks in Hawaii in March. We went to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, with the secondary reason of visiting our son and his family. They live in Sasebo, Japan (Kyushu). Hawaii is half way to Japan. We toured 4 islands for 2 weeks, then spent the last week at Waikiki with our son, Thom, his wife Etsuko and our three grandchildren Noah, Kimi and Nico.

From Loretta Taylor: These photos were taken at our home in Lexington, Kentucky. I cooked dinner for all the family on Mother’s Day. From Dave Lionette: On Sat., May 3, at 5:00 PM, the rain stopped long enough for Lillyanna Peniza and I to say our nuptials on Sabal 18, followed by a dinner for 9 at the Club. I proposed to her on the golf course so it seemed fitting to be married there. Five Dysfunctions of a TeamBy Andrew [email protected]

Teams and groups are popular vehicles for task performance. They are used in sports, business, and volunteer activities. By definition, a team is a small collection of individuals with complementary skills, equally committed to a common purpose for which they hold themselves mutually accountable (Katzenbach and Smith, The Wisdom of Teams, 1995). Those who advocate for teams at work or in volunteer organizations subscribe to the principle of “synergy,” which means the “whole is greater than the sum of its parts or 2+2=5.” Or simply stated, when people interact, they produce an energy that exceeds the output of individuals separately adding their work together. Despite their many advantages teams face significant challenges.

The Mind Game In his book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick

Lencioni identifies five major problems that a team may face. These problems confront boards and committees as they attempt to do their work.

Absence of trust-caused by team members not being genuinely open with each other. Hidden agendas and the formation of sub-groups or cliques within the larger group contribute to a lack of trust.

Fear of Conflict-an absence of trust leads to an unwillingness of team members to share disagreements openly. “Undisscussables” (issues that every team member is aware of but, will not surface “wink-wink” or the “elephant in the room”) exist. Undisscussables are typically about team member relationships and/or leadership style. And while most team members say they are concerned with only substantive issues the underlying personnel problems negatively impact discussions.

Lack of commitment-because the team has difficulty openly sharing and resolving conflict, members have trouble buying-in and committing to decisions. A classic symptom of lack of commitment is when team members privately tell others that they were against a given decision

made by the whole team.Avoidance of accountability-because of the three

previous dysfunctions, team members have trouble confronting each other when team efforts appear to be counterproductive. When the entire team is not committed to a plan of action, it is difficult to hold members accountable for something they did not “buy into.”

Inattention to results-the previous four dysfunctions contribute to a climate where team members put their individual needs (ego, reputation among those responsible for electing/selecting the member to the team, need for recognition) above the collective goals of the team.

All of the above dysfunctions can be prevented by creating an appropriate team climate. Leadership is a strong influencer of team climate. If the leader modelsthe behaviors s/he expects from others i.e., openness, a willingness to surface “undisscussables,” a commitment to team produced ideas, taking responsibility without blaming others, and focusing on what’s best for the team, not an individual, team efforts can produce effective results.

Hello from the golf shop. I hope everyone is enjoying a great summer of golf. As you can see, there’s a lot of work going on all throughout the community, with many major projects taking place. We should have the driving range open for regular use on mats sometime this month. When this project is complete, including the addition of a new practice putting green, it will be a major improvement to our practice facilities. Other projects on the schedule include a new structure to house the ball machine on the range, and expansion of the golf cart staging area.

Chris and Andy took a recent trip with a group of HP members to Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. It was a memorable trip for everyone. We will be planning another trip next spring to another one of our country’s great golf destinations. Details will follow with dates and location.

summer and weather has somewhat cooperated. We have moved the start times to 3:00pm and hope to stay ahead the storms. Sign up is available weekly in the golf shop.

Do You Know The Rules?By Dave [email protected] You are playing in the Member Member Tournament. You hit your second shot a few yards short of the green. You are preparing to play your chip shot from off the putting green when you or your partner touch the green with a club to indicate line of play. What is the ruling? There is no penalty. The prohibition against touching the putting green to indicate the line of play applies only if the player’s ball lies on the putting green. If player’s ball was on the putting green and you or your partner would touch the line of play, the penalty would be: Match play – Loss of hole; Stroke play - two stroke penalty.
