Vol. 41 No. 14 24 May 2012

Dear members of the Marcellin College family,

Last Friday evening Marcellin College and Our Lady of Mercy College, otherwise known as M2 Theatre, presented

their annual musical production. This event prompted me to reflect on the question of why schools decide to commit

to providing these types of experiences and programs. Do schools put on musicals because they wish to provide

entertainment to their community? Is it because they want to provide a vehicle for students to showcase their

talents? Is it purely as a marketing and PR exercise for the respective schools involved? There is no doubt that each

of these motivations have a part to play, however they run a distant second to the prime motivating factor in schools

committing themselves to this type of enterprise. The only really worthwhile reason to engage in this type of activity

in schools is as a learning experience for our students.

Everything we do in schools is motivated by learning. Every activity we undertake both in and outside the classroom

is an opportunity for students to gain experience, knowledge and understanding which will help them to grow and

develop as they journey toward adulthood. In this case the stage becomes the classroom, a place where students are

challenged to take ownership over their learning and a place which dares them to take risks in order to achieve

personal success.

Which brings me to the naming of this year’s M2 musical production…

In August last year I was approached by the Performing Arts staff at Marcellin who were seeking approval for their

choice of Musical for this year. My first response to their suggestion to stage a production called Urinetown was not

a positive one. I was concerned that a musical with this title would be inappropriate for a school setting and I

suggested that they think again! This first reaction was one born from ignorance on my part – never a satisfactory

position from which to make such a decision. So after much discussion and consultation (and a reading of the script) I

decided to trust our Performing Arts staff, who by the way have never let us down before, to produce this

production with the questionable title.

In making this decision I was reminded by my fellow M2 Principal, Julie Ryan (OLMC), that the opportunities we

provide our students should always be motivated by the rich learning that may come from them and that a vital

element in the learning process is the ability to take risks. Having now seen this incredibly diverse and powerful

production I believe that the risks we all took have definitely paid off. This production provided, perhaps more than

many others, wonderfully varied opportunities for students to grow and develop not just as performers but as

learners. I could provide many examples of how this takes place in the show itself, however I think it better that you

should come along and see for yourself – there may still be a couple of tickets left, but be quick!

I would like to thank all those wonderful risk takers, staff, students and parents who gave of their time and talents in

providing such a rich and varied learning opportunity and along the way entertaining and inspiring our two school

communities. I would particularly like to thank all those staff from Marcellin who took responsibility for this year’s

production. To Michael Calmer (Producer), Natalie Ciardulli and Clive Haese (Co-Directors), Nicholas Cowall (Musical

Director), Melissa Rapinett (Choreographer), David Blackman (Stage Manager), Lisa McVilly (Set Design) and Scott

Lindner (Musician) along with many other staff from Marcellin who contributed in many ways to support the show. I

would also like to thank the members of Friends of Marcellin Performing Arts (FOMPA) led by Maree Briers for their

dedication in supporting the show in a million and one ways. Thank you also to Jenni Rotar who continues to provide

such selfless support in the design and production of costumes.

Finally I wish to thank the students and their families who not only worked so hard through countless rehearsals to

present a show of such professional quality but equally importantly for trusting us and for having the courage to take

risks, risks which provide them with learning opportunities they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Murphy

REFLECTION

May my mind come alive today

To the invisible geography

That invites me to new frontiers,

To break the dead shell of yesterdays,

May I have the courage today

To live the life that I would love,

To postpone my dream no longer

To do at last what I came here for

And waste my heart on fear no more.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Mr Adriano Di Prato

Congratulations

On Friday 19th May I was fortunate enough to attend this

year’s M2 production – Urinetown.

I was extremely proud to watch a quality musical,

produced by Marcellin in conjunction with OLMC that

allowed us to be taken on a journey that explored

corruption, greed, love and hope.

Our two Colleges should be very proud of the

contributions of each student performing, the students

that worked back stage and the staff and parents involved

Image: Male lead, Andrew Cappellari (centre) with Joshua Briers in staging yet again an outstanding musical production. and Adrian Del Re in Urinetown

With limited tickets remaining I encourage all members of the Marcellin community to go out and purchase a ticket

to view this wonderful show. Special thank you to FOMPA for their continued support of the Performing Arts

opportunities here at Marcellin.

COLLEGE CAPTAIN

Edward Robinson

In 2008 the first SRC Executive was formed. At this time the SRC Executive developed an SRC Constitution. Since

then the College has seen a growth in student voice with many leadership roles available, including opportunities for

leadership in Academic and Sporting pursuits.

In keeping with this notion of creating meaningful leadership opportunities for students at Marcellin the 2012 SRC

Executive recently endorsed constitutional change that will occur for 2013 and beyond. Below is a summary of the

amendments:

The endorsed constitution change sees an extra SRC leadership role offered in each House group at Year 7,

hence having a total of sixteen leadership roles offered to Year 7s.

The endorsed constitution change will also see the College introduce a Junior School Captain along with two

Junior School Vice Captains at the Year 9 Level.

A renewed timeline process for electing SRC leaders was also endorsed at a recent meeting.

A special thank you to Mr Mark Ashmore, Head of Junior School and the Pastoral Care Team who have brought

forward these great SRC constitution proposals. I wish to also acknowledge the SRC Executive for the rigorous

discussion that occurred at the meeting to endorse the proposals.

Time and Space Program

Year 7 Mother Son Evening

Recently the Year 7 Mother and Son Night was facilitated by Mr Bill Jennings from Melbourne, to provide “time and

space” for mothers to connect with their sons and talk with other mothers in a similar position.

It was evident how welcoming and open members of our Marcellin Community are towards one another when

numerous conversations between mothers and boys began the evening. A panel shared a special quality of their son

or mother as well as an opportunity to share some special advice. Highlights of the evening include the mothers and

boys sharing a treasured story or item that emphasises the importance of the relationship.

Below I offer you a few comments that participants wrote regarding the evening:

From the Year 7 Boys:

I felt I really bonded with my mum.

I thought it was fun to ask questions and share memories.

It was a great time to express our feelings.

From the Mums & Mentors:

It was a lovely evening to spend getting to know some of the Year 7 boys and their mothers as well as spending time

with my son.

It was such a fabulous opportunity to really take the time to spend one on one with my son and really talk beyond the

chats we would have at home on a daily basis.

It was a positive experience and a great way to meet new mums. The small group session was a great way to listen to

the boys and their stories about settling into school.

I would like to thank the staff, students and parents for their help as panel members or group leaders, and to the

mothers and Year 7 boys for making the night so memorable.

Year 8 Father Son Evening

The annual Marcellin College Time & Space for Stepping Up night will be held on Tuesday 29th May in St Marcellin’s

Hall. The College offers you this opportunity in this crucial time as your son continues his journey through Secondary

School and into his adolescent years.

The purpose of the night is to stop and acknowledge the journey your son is taking as he embarks upon adolescence.

With the assistance of the Marcellin College community, you will be led through an engaging evening which involves

both discussion groups and significant one on one time with your son.

For the Year 9’s – be on the lookout for the canoeing Father-Son Time & Space adventure happening in Term 4.

Year 8 Pay It Forward Awareness Day

On Monday the College community participated in the Pay It Forward Awareness Day which involved our Year 8

Discover teachers and students highlighting the issues and providing support for Marist communities in Australia and

abroad.

As part of their student led inquiry projects the boys conducted an awareness fair that involved a number of stalls

teaching, advocating and being charitable to support the communities. Events included coordinating a barbeque,

selling drinks and food, providing handouts and brochures, as well as conducting social justice initiatives.

The stalls and the casual clothes day help to contribute a significant amount of money to the eight Marist causes.

I thank the extremely hard working Year 8 Discover teachers and students for creating a wonderful atmosphere on

the day whilst highlighting the needs to pay it forward to others in the community.

Dr. Bernie Crimmins, general practitioner, author of men’s health books, and member of the Marcellin College

Old Collegians will be the keynote speaker during the evening.

Quadrangle and Br. Placidus Resource Centre

The Year 8 Inquiry unit this term is focused on ‘Pay It Forward’. Students have been participating in various

Timor - to ‘pay it forward’ by doing an act of service – charity, teach or advocacy.

I extend an invitation to members of the community to attend the film festival where Year 8 students will

present films about their Marist or Catholic organisation and the actions taken to support the people at the

margins.

LAW WEEK MOCK TRIAL

Ms Rosemary Chapple

Last week Nick Romeo of Year 11 participated in the Law

Week Mock trial, held in the Supreme Court. Nick was invited

to sit on the jury for the case, which was about drug

trafficking.

“As a member of the jury, I was able to observe how the

supreme court functioned” Nick said. “I found it interesting

how the fate of the accused is determined by the decision of

the jury. The judge himself may only direct the jury in points

of law. So our legal system is based on the common sense

and understanding of the average person to determine guilt

or innocence.” The trial followed all the processes of a real

trial, and featured Senior Counsel, junior barristers, and a

Supreme Court Judge presided. Image: Nick Romeo Year 11

Last week thirty-nine legal studies students visited Barwon

Prison, where they were able to speak to three men who had

committed murder. Each prisoner had a unique and

interesting story and an explanation of how they came to

commit the crime. The prisoners explained to the students

their prison work – whether in the factory, helping prisoners

adjust to life in jail, or working in meal preparation. Students

were surprised to learn that prisoners are locked in their cells

at 4pm and are there till 8am the next day – this means they

have dinner at about 3pm. The boys learned about the prison

system as well as how the convicted men found their court

process. Officers also told the students about their duties

and roles.

MARCELLIN COLLEGE LIBRARY BLOG

Ms Karen Kearney

Did you know that the Marcellin College Library has a blog?

You'll find it at http://mclibrary11.wordpress.com/

It's a fun place for the Marcellin community to find out about some of the great new books that come through our

Library. Recent posts have been added about a new fantasy series by Emily Rodda, The Three Doors, suitable for our

junior boys, and two books giving lots of statistics and information about the 2012 AFL season - both teams and

players. There's a post exploring the books of Brian Selznick. His novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret was the basis for

the recent film Hugo. I'm pleased to see that each of these books have already been borrowed.

The blog is a terrific place to explore. You'll find some wonderful reviews of books written by some of our students

and you might find some new books to suggest to your sons, or maybe even to read yourselves. There's lots of book

trailer videos to have a look at and there are plenty of links to author and series websites. Perhaps you'd like to read

our most popular post. In that case look out for the post on Conspiracy 365, a series of very popular adventure

novels by Australian author Gabrielle Lord, recently made into a television series.

Have a look at the "For Parents" tab just under the site banner. Here you'll find some information on Cybersafety.

There are plans for more information to be added in the future.

A "Follow" tab on the page allows you to put your email address in and you will automatically be sent an email

alerting you to new posts on the blog.

Here's hoping we see some of our community dropping by, joining the many visitors we have had from all over the

world.

RUGBY – ROUND 4

Mr Simon Strachan

The U16s and U14s are still showing the way for Marcellin Rugby. The U14s had a good win against Melbourne

Grammar 2 following on from their great win in Ballarat the week before. The U16s had another comprehensive

victory against Haileybury College scoring eight tries amongst five different players. The 1stXV went down to

Haileybury College 19 to 29. They showed what they could do in the second half after being out muscled in the first.

They outscored Haileybury 19 to 14 but unfortunately the damage had been done. The U15 had to forfeit against St

Kevin’s due to the lack of numbers, however they equaled up the teams and played a scratch match getting some

valuable game time. The highlight of the week goes to the U13s. Each week they have showed improvement in all

aspects of their game. This week was no exception with the team scoring their first and second tries ever in Marcellin

colours! Congratulations to the U13 group and the very enthusiastic parents and supporters who have been coming

out each week.

Jackson Joeng makes the VSRU U16 Squad to tour the UK, Ireland, France and Belgium

Congratulations to Jackson Joeng (Marhles, Year 8) who has been selected in the 2012 U16

VSRU UK, Ireland, France and Belgium tour squad. The group goes on tour in December of

this year for a month of truly wonderful Rugby, cultural and educational experiences.

Jackson can be very proud of his achievement to make this squad especially considering he

is still only U15. A number of Marcellin Students have made this tour, most notably the last

three Marcellin 1stXV Captains.

We have some very dedicated teacher’s , young men and women that for many months have rehearsed nights after school, holidays and weekends to bring the Senior Production “URINTOWN THE MUSICAL” to life.

Last Friday & Saturday we saw the first 2 performances, AND THEY

WERE AMAZING!!!!!

This production is well worth seeing even if your son is not performing. We still have 4 shows to go and many tickets yet to sell, so come along and support our teachers and boys. It is by far more encouraging and heart warming for our boys to perform to a full house. Performance dates are: Thursday 24th,

Friday 25th Saturday 26th Matinee Saturday 26th Finale

Log on to Try Bookings and book your tickets now.

I would like to thank the many parents and students that have made themselves available to help with front of house.

We also have parents that not only have donated their time to help but have also crafted some beautiful items that are being raffled, again thank you.

We have a raffle for each performance, then on Saturday 26th all

tickets purchased during all performances go into the draw for the out-house raffle.

The memorabilia raffles will also be drawn on Saturday, we have 2

hand designed and painted plates with a framed flyer signed by cast a crew. They are beautiful and well worth the money.

Again, I encourage you to come along, the wonderful parents and

students will sell you raffle tickets, programmes, tea, coffee, wine and chocolate and then usher you into the theatre for a few hours of fun and laughter.

Regards, Marie Briers – FOMPA

Dear Parents,

Woodwind Soiree Woodwind Soiree Woodwind Soiree Woodwind Soiree - Wednesday 30th May 7pm

As highlighted in the School Calendar and College Planner, there will be a Wood-wind Soiree on the Wednesday 30th of May at 7pm in the Marcellin College Performing Arts Centre. The format of the soiree will include a program of solo and ensemble performances by students studying a woodwind instrument in our classroom and Private Tuition program.

This evening constitutes an important part of a students musical growth. As each student performs as a soloist, they experience a different facet of performance where the finer points of their musicianship are highlighted and reflected upon for future development.

Entry to the Soiree is by gold coin donation and tea and coffee will be supplied by the Friends of Marcellin Performing Arts. A raffle and fabulous prizes will also be drawn on the night.

We are looking forward to seeing many family and friends in the audience on our Performance Nights and I hope that every musician and his family and friends will enjoy our 2012 Instrumental Soiree season.

For students who are interested in learning a woodwind instrument this would be a great time to come along and meet the tutors, watch the performance and see if this is something that you would enjoy being a part of.

With best wishes,

Nicholas Cowall,

Director of Music and Performing Arts

Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a problem-

solving program for multi-aged teams of

students who work together to solve a

demanding, open-ended Long Term Challenge

over six weeks. The team must also participate

in an unseen Spontaneous Challenge on

Tournament Day.

Tournament of Minds’ aim is to enhance the potential of our students by developing diverse

skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a

challenging and competitive environment.

Some of the objectives are:

• To promote the stimulation of real, open-ended challenges;

• To develop creative problem-solving approaches and techniques;

• To foster cooperative learning and teamwork;

• To promote knowledge and appreciation of self and others;

• To encourage experimentation and risk-taking;

• To expand and reward creative and divergent thinking;

• To stimulate a spirit of inquiry and a love of learning; and

• To celebrate excellence.

The team is made up of seven team members from Years 7 – 10. They will decide which of

the four challenges offered they will attempt to solve. There are four Long term Challenge

disciplines:

• Applied Technology

• Language Literature

• Maths Engineering

• Social Sciences.

Tournament Day takes place at La Trobe University, Bundoora on the weekend of 18 – 19

August , for part of ONE of these days.

Students will be invited to attend a second session to finalise the teams next week.Only

TWO teams will then be formulated after this … so don’t miss out!
