The Italian Industries Federation of Aerospace, Defence and Security (AIAD) was funded in 1947. It includes almost all the national enterprises that operate with advanced technology in the design, production, research and services activities for the civil and military aerospace, military navy and army sectors. It acts as the point of reference for all the national and foreign institutions for the coordination of all those activities in which there is a need to represent the sector’s national interest, it is a member of the equivalent European Association (ASD). AIAD is the actor of the intensive promotional activities abroad, both to coordinate the Italian participations to the most important international events and to organize and direct not only the mission of our enterprises abroad but also the visits of foreign delegations in Italy. EICAS AUTOMAZIONE S.p.A. has a long heritage in the field of attitude determination from star measurement. Starting from the experience gained in the HIPPARCOS Mission, many Autonomous Attitude Determination Systems (AADS) have been designed and validated under ESA/ASI contracts and for large players, moving from mono-head to multi-head and multicamera configuration, from CCD to CMOS technology. In the most recent years the company has finalized a new concept of multicamera system powerful and low cost, based on sophisticated in-flight auto-calibration techniques both of the camera model and of the camera attitude related to the spacecraft reference frame.

The first proprietary star tracker, ARGO 1.0, is currently being validated in-orbit, onboard ION-mk02 by D-ORBIT S.p.A. Its development was co-funded by the H2020 SME-INSTRUMENT Programme.A second star tracker, ARGO 2.0, co-funded by ESA, is under development and will achieve flight heritage by End 2022.

GAUSS is an Italian private Company carrying on the tradition of the Scuola di Ingegneria Aerospaziale in the field of Small Satellites. The Company activities range from structural design and mission analysis to the realization of complete micro, nano, pico, femto satellites (CubeSat, PocketQube, TubeSats), their deployers and main aerospace subsystems (On-Board Computers, Telco Systems, customers’ payloads) as well as in-orbit-demonstrator (IOD) services and ground segment operations. The Company “UniSat” satellite platform is used as a carrier and deployer for third-parties’ satellites in orbit.

The latest satellite, UNISAT-7, was launched on March 22nd, 2021, by a Soyuz-Fregat Launcher from Baikonur Cosmodrome. UNISAT-7 has released five smaller satellites in orbit, and it includes several GAUSS subsystems to be tested in orbit, as well as several third-party payloads that will be demonstrated in orbit: a low-thrust engine for orbital maneuvers from T4i and a RF payload for research of NB-IOT from space.

MIPRONS is developing an innovative micro-propulsion system, installable on satellites and/or related carriers, extra-atmospheric drones and latest stages of launchers. It is covered by a patent filed in 49 countries worldwide and already issued in Italy.

The micro-thruster, fed by green propellant, stands out for high specific impulse, high thrust, high total impulse and low weight. All that takes to the possibility of performing maneuvers, such as orbit changes, in a very short time compared to the state of the art (days/weeks instead of months/years). MIPRONS was established in March 2019, by Angelo Minotti and other 6 shareholders. The prototype is under development (3<TRL<4), with the aim to reach TRL=7 by the second half of 2022. The company has already won national and international prizes and received many EoI. In particular, a co-development agreement with a worldwide major space company is under negotiation.

T4i is an established rocket company born in 2014. T4i’s aim is to revolutionize the in-space and access to space transportation, developing innovative engines to open unexplored forms of mobility to small satellite platforms and unlimited windows to access space.
