John Douglas Arnup was born on May 24th, 1911 in Toronto, Ontario. He graduated from Oakwood CollegiateInstitute in Toronto in 1928. He attended Victoria College at the University of Toronto from 1928 to 1932, andgraduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History. He enrolled at Osgoode Hall Law School in1932. He articled with R.L. Kellock under principal Gershon Mason, and was called to the Bar in 1935. Arnup wasnamed a partner at Mason, Foulds, Arnup, Walter, Weir and Boeckh in Toronto (1955) and Arnup, Foulds,Boeckh and Morris (1968). Arnup was elected a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1952, and servedas its Treasurer from 1963 to 1966. As a representative of the Law Society of Upper Canada, Arnup negotiated anew program of legal education in Ontario. In 1957, he contributed to the creation of accredited university lawschools and the institution of the Bar Admission Course. He also conducted negotiations with the AttorneyGeneral of Ontario concerning a sponsored legal aid plan for the province. Arnup was appointed a justice of theOntario Court of Appeal on April 17th, 1970 and served until his retirement in October of 1985. Between theyears 1966 to 1968, Arnup successfully represented Texas Gulf copper mine as lead counsel in the longest civilcase ever heard in Ontario. Arnup served as a member of the Senate of the University of Toronto (1945-1950) andthe Board of Regents at Victoria University (1960-1970). He was a member of the council of the Canadian BarAssociation from 1946 to 1949 and 1960 to 1970. Arnup was president of the Lawyer's Club from 1949 to 1950,and served as chairman of the Law Society Foundation from 1968 to 1970. He was a member of the County ofYork Legal Aid Committee (1967-1970) and was a founding director of the Advocates' Society. Arnup authoredthe book "Middleton: The Beloved Judge" (Osgoode Society, 1988). Arnup received honourary degrees fromQueen's University (1967), York University (1969), Victoria University (1976), and the Law Society of UpperCanada (1984). He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1989. Arnup married Caroline DoraUlrichsen on August 2nd, 1941. John D. Arnup died on October 5th, 2005.

Fonds consists of speeches, photographs, correspondence, memoirs and other material related to the legal careerand personal life of John D. Arnup in his role as a lawyer, judge, and bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada.The fonds also contains biographical material about D. Park Jamieson and Joseph Sedgwick, and items relating tothe life of Carol Arnup (daughter of John D. Arnup). The fonds is arranged into six series: biographical material;photographs; speeches and related material; correspondence; Carol Arnup material; memoirs. The fonds includeshandwritten and typed speeches, newspaper and magazine clippings, programmes, memoirs, notes, memoranda, apoem, and photographs.
