BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE
Kathryn Enid Emerson (1940-2004) was a long-time resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan, where
she worked for many years on civil rights and other social causes, including welfare rights and
welfare reform, women’s rights, and anti-war efforts.
Dr. James Clarence Buntin was born July 6, 1921, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a Navy
veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. Dr. Buntin received Bachelor and Master’s
degrees from Springfield College in Massachusetts, and taught in the Springfield Public Schools
from 1949 to 1950. He then earned a Masters of Education degree from University of Arizona in
1954, and worked as a teacher, counselor, psychometrist, child welfare and attendance counselor,
and as assistant director of long-range planning for the Stockton, California, Unified School
District from 1954 to 1969. Dr. Buntin earned his PhD from the University of Michigan School
of Education in 1972, and was an administrator and teacher in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Dr.
Buntin died on August 28, 1998.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Kathryn Emerson and Dr. James C. Buntin Papers are arranged in six series, with one
addendum.
The Kathryn Emerson series consists of correspondence, publications, community organization
material, mental health and child welfare publications and newsletters, and welfare activism
material related to Ms. Emerson’s work and life in the Ann Arbor and Southeastern Michigan
area.
The Dr. James C. Buntin series includes correspondence, publications, photographs, and
educational program material related to Dr. Buntin’s work in elementary and multi-cultural
education. Also included are materials describing his early education, doctorial work at the
University of Michigan, and employment and work in the Stockton (Calif.) and Ann Arbor
(Mich.) school systems.
The Periodicals and Reports series consists periodicals and academic and professional reports
primarily focused on African American history and multi-cultural education.
The Interviews series consists of two audio interviews with family members of Ms. Emerson
and Dr. Buntin.
The Ephemera series is made up of clothing, protest and informational posters, clippings and
advocacy buttons. Researchers should note that the clothing and accessory items are housed and
shelved separately from the rest of the collection.
The Books series and Books Addendum series consists of several hundred books considered to
be from the personal library of Dr. Buntin.
