COPYRIGHT AND PRIVACY RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. The Privacy Act of 1974 (5 United States Code 552a) governs the use of materials that document private individuals, groups and corporations.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a reproduction if the document does not infringe the privacy rights of an individual, group or corporation. These specified conditions of authorized use include:

• non-commercial and non-profit study, scholarship, research or teaching • criticism or commentary • as a NPS preservation or security copy for research use • as a research copy for deposit in another institution

If the researcher later uses a copy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," the researcher is personally liable for copyright, privacy, or publicity infringement and agrees to indemnify the NPS from any legal action as a result of the error. Permission to obtain a photographic, xerographic, digital or other copy of a document does not indicate permission to publish, exhibit, perform, reproduce, sell, distribute or prepare derivative works from the document without permission from the copyright holder and from any private individual, group or corporation shown or otherwise recorded.

Permission to publish, exhibit, perform, reproduce, prepare derivative works from, sell or otherwise distribute the item must be obtained separately in writing from the holder of the original copyright (or if the creator is dead from his/her heirs) as well as from any individual(s), groups or corporations whose name, image, recorded words or private information (e.g. employment information) may be reproduced in the source material. The holder of the original copyright is not necessarily the National Park Service. The National Park Service is not legally liable for copyright, privacy or publicity infringement when materials are wrongfully used after being provided to researchers for "fair use."

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if fulfillment of the order is judged in violation of copyright or federal or state privacy or publicity law. This institution also places restrictions on the use of cameras, photocopiers and scanners in the research room.

Pratt Research Papers - 1

INTRODUCTION

Frederick Haven Pratt, M.D. (1873-1958) originally collected these papers while conducting research culminating in the publication of The Craigies in 1942. Frederick Pratt's interest in the Craigies and Andrew Craigie, Jr. (1754-1819) in particular was apparently three-fold. First, Frederick Pratt was a direct descendent of Andrew Craigie's father, Andrew Craigie, Sr. (1703-1766) through the Foster, Haven, and Pratt families. Second, both Craigie and Pratt had careers in the medical field. Andrew Craigie was the first Apothecary General of the United States and Frederick Pratt was a physiologist. Third, Frederick Pratt was a friend of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana who at the time resided in the Georgian-style colonial mansion once owned by Andrew Craigie.

In the 1990s Frederick's son, Stephen D. Pratt, conducted further research and published a new edition of his father's book entitled The Craigies: A Footnote to the Medical History of the Revolution, 1996. Stephen Pratt improved upon his father's work by adding an index, a Craigie-Foster genealogical chart (see Appendix B), and a new cover design (see cover of this finding aid) featuring a color portrait of Andrew Craigie.

Stephen Pratt formally announced the publication of the new edition on January 22, 1997. He donated these research papers and a copy of the new edition to Longfellow National Historic Site1 at the same time. When the site received the papers, they were organized alphabetically in file folders with separate index tabs in a record center carton. The papers were re-housed in letter size acid-free folders and archives boxes by museum specialist Michael Florer. Acid-free paper was used as interleaving and photographs were placed in envelopes as appropriate. All metal fasteners were removed. The folders were kept in original order and the labels given by the Pratts were retained. A finding aid was written by Florer in March of 1997, with the assistance of Michelle Ortwein, Northeast Museum Services Center, Boston, MA.

In 2007, oversized items were removed from the letter-sized boxes, unfolded and placed in oversized boxes by Simmons College archives intern Amanda Bushnell working under the direction of archives specialist Anita Israel. Oversized materials were replaced with separation sheets showing their new location. A copy of the separation sheet was placed with the item showing its original location. Photographs were also separated and replaced with separation sheets. The finding aid was rewritten to reflect these changes and to make it conform to the standard format. The finding aid was again updated for formatting in 2019.

1 The site’s name was changed to Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site in 2010.

Description: The Frederick Haven Pratt & Stephen D. Pratt Research Papers, 1783-1996 were generated as a result of research conducted by Frederick Haven Pratt, M.D. to publish The Craigies in 1942 and by his son, Stephen D. Pratt, to publish a new edition, The Craigies: A Footnote to the Medical History of the Revolution, in 1996. These materials primarily focus upon Andrew Craigie, Jr. (1754-1819), the first Apothecary General of the United States and a former owner/resident of the Vassall-Craigie-Longfellow House in Cambridge, Massachusetts-Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site today. These research papers span over 200 years, 1783-1996. The majority of them can be divided into three principle time periods:

1783-1840 Original legal documents and letters of the Craigie, Foster, and Haven families.

late 1930s-early 1940s Frederick Haven Pratt's research materials.

early 1990s-1996 Stephen D. Pratt's research materials and a copy of the new edition of The Craigies.

APPENDIX A: EXPANDED COLLECTION LISTING

Notes:

• This list was created before the separation of oversize and photographic material in 2007; separation sheets in the original folder note the new location of this material.

• Many of Frederick Pratt's files are organized by the person with whom he corresponded. A subject index needs to be compiled and added to this finding aid, especially since the same subject may be found in multiple folders.

• Primary sources are listed individually while research notes and secondary sources are in groups.

• People abbreviations: FHP = Frederick Haven Pratt, SDP = Stephen D. Pratt. • This condition assessment was done circa 1997. Abbreviations: E = excellent, G = good,

F = fair, and P = poor. Use of more than one letter indicates the condition range for a group of papers.
