Digital images and copyright
• Creating and sharing digital images is easy but using them legally is not so easy.
• Copyright owners do not have to make any explicit statements regarding their work.
• The absence of clear copyright license information attached to an image does not mean it is free to use.
TIP! Always assume an image is protected under copyright unless otherwise stated

Types of digital image
• Public domain images – these are copyright cleared (“no rights reserved”) images which are free to use, no permission required.
• Free to use and share images – licensed images free to use and share but you need to check the terms of the license.
• Copyrighted images (“all rights reserved”) images require permission from the website or image owner.
• You may be required to pay a fee for using the image.

Creative Commons
• Creative Commons is a non-profit organisation that enables the sharing and use of images and other works.
• It enables creators to give others the right to share, use and build upon work created.
• There are many different Creative Commons licenses and each allows the image to be shared and reused in different ways.
• Watch this short Video for a quick introduction to copyright and Creative Commons.

Public domain CC licenses
• Public Domain (CC0) licences indicate that a work is no longer restricted by copyright and can be freely used by others.
• CC0 image creators have chosen to opt out of copyright and database protection and have waived their exclusive rights, to the fullest extent allowed by law. More at https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/public-domain/cc0/
CC0 = No Rights Reserved

Free to use and share images
• Free to use and share images can be shared and used but changing or editing might not be allowed.
• Alterantively, modifying, sharing and using these images for commercial only purposes might not be allowed. (This option typically finds the most results).
• Copyright holders can choose from a range of permissions while retaining their copyright.
Tip! Not all images are available for all uses

• Source e.g. Flickr, Google Images, Bing etc.

Referencing images
• Referencing is different from attribution and you are required to do both.
• You need to link your attribution statement to your reference list at the end of your poster.
• Your reference should include full details including how to find the image.
