2 35th Dr. Michael T. Fagin Pan African Student Leadership Conference

Dear Delegates, It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you all to the 35th Dr. Michael T. Fagin Pan African Student Leadership Conference. This year’s conference has been designed by structure and content to address many of the problems that create conflict and friction between the many different cultural groups found within the Diaspora of African peoples. This year’s theme is quite appropriate for the challenges which face Pan African communities throughout the globe in that we continue to see conflicts amongst many groups on the African

continent. Similarly, within African American communities we continue to see conflict and a lack of unity amongst Africans and African American peoples. This year’s theme “Finding Common Ground to Build Unity and Respect in Pan African Communities” will help us find solutions to many of today’s contemporary concerns. I am sure you will find the internationally known speakers as well as the panels lead by student leaders to be academically informative as well as culturally uplifting. I am hoping that all delegates will extend themselves to meet people from different lands and from different cultures to gain a better understanding of the diversity within Pan African communities and to begin working towards solutions that will help us find common ground to build unity and respect. The solutions that are needed in Pan African communities will come only from African peoples working with others throughout the world. Let us continue to work together to build stronger Pan African communities and greater understanding of our uniqueness and our diversity. I am sure that we will all profit from the speakers, panels and activities imbedded in this year’s conference. The programs will address economic, political, social and health concerns that impact Pan African communities. I look forward to meeting and greeting as many delegates as possible as we celebrate our unity and diversity from a global perspective. Sincerely, Dr. Michael T. Fagin

I claim my heritage as a spiritual human being.I am an intelligent capable person.

I recognize the common bond I have with allAfrikan people in the diaspora.

I am because we areWe are Afrikan.

We claim our powerful history as a people of God.

We are able to do anything as long as we do it together.

We recognize the collective necessityof all Afrikan people wherever they may be.

We are AfrikanWe are not a race, yet as one we respond,

academically, positively, progressivelyand effectively to…

Imperialism, colonialism, racism and oppression.

“Lift Every Voice and Sing”

Lift every voice and sing,Till earth and heaven ring.

Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;Let our rejoicing rise high as the glistening skies,

Let it resound loud as the rolling seas.Sing a song full of the faith that the dark

past has taught us.Sing a song full of the hope that the

present has brought us.Facing the rising sun of our new day begun

Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trodBitter the chastening rod,

Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;Yet with a steady beat,

have not our weary feet come to the place for which our fathers sighted?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered.

We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughter.

Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at lastWhere the white gleam of our bright start is cast.

God of our weary years,God of our silent tears,

Thou who has brought us this far on the way;Thou who has by Thy night Lead us into the light,

Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Let our feet stray from the places, Our God, Where we met Thee;

Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world,we forget Thee;

Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand,

True to our God, True to our native land.

“Lift Every Voice and Sing”Written by James Weldon Johnson

A poet and civil rights leader.The music arranged by R. Rosamond Johnson.It is often referred to as the Negro National

Anthem and sung at the opening of many public gatherings.
