FINDING INNOVATION IN RURAL EDUCATION
Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative
April 12, 2017
East Kentucky Expo Center #ARIFIRE
The Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) is a public education agency governed by
superintendents from the counties of Breathitt, Floyd, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Owsley, Perry, Pike, and Wolfe along with independent districts in Hazard (Perry County), Jackson (Breathitt County), Jenkins (Letcher County), Middlesboro (Bell County), Pikeville (Pike County), and Paintsville (Johnson County). These rural public school districts lie within the Central Appalachian Region of Kentucky and comprise an area about the size of Connecticut. East Kentucky Superintendents realized the necessity of such an organization and established KVEC in 1969 to address the needs of rural school districts. The Cooperative serves as a regional public education entity, focusing attention on teaching, learning and leadership, maximizing educational opportunities, and contributing to a more effective use of resources.

Appalachia Rising
Welcome to this year’s FIRE Summit!
This year’s Summit is a celebration of the powerful and compelling learning taking place across the east Kentucky region that is driven by you, hundreds of committed educators and thousands of learners.
The overarching mission of the Appalachian Renaissance Initiative (ARI) is to lead and direct catalytic systemic transformation that improves student success through innovation in systems design, resource use, and human capital development. When combined, these innovations contribute to the resurgence in educational excellence taking place in the Appalachian region.
Renaissance membership consists of KVEC, member public school districts and collaborating partners in east Kentucky and across the United States. ARI’s geographic footprint is an area approximately the size of Connecticut that includes districts bordering on West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee and serves over 50,000 students and approximately 3,000 educators.
KVEC member districts and ARI collaborating partners have a strong commitment to sharing professional learning and engaging other committed educators in an open discourse to discover innovative solutions to common and unique challenges.
ARI is propelled by a commitment to design a system that is SIMPLE (without being simplistic), STRENGTH-BASED, and fiscally SUSTAINABLE. The design emphasizes that locally generated solutions, informed by relevant scholarship, result in system-wide continuous improvement, and a perpetual process toward excellence driven by committed leadership.
The RTTT-D program supports bold and locally directed improvements in leadership, teaching and learning that will directly improve achievement. ARI serves as an innovation laboratory for public education with an emphasis on rural communities.
The east Kentucky region is experiencing a Renaissance that is being led by YOU, and by school systems, educators, students and community members. The work underway is a significant and catalytic model that will inform and support other communities working to dramatically improve educational outcomes for students in rural schools nationally.

Round 2 Building It Forward (Tiny House Project)
The Building It Forward Project (Tiny House) is taking learning outside and getting hands-on. Students are able to consider different career fields, learn basic workplace behavior, and develop specific skills within an industry. The KVEC Tiny House project can impact all students. Those high academic achievers will gain skills they may not acquire from sitting in a classroom focused solely on a book. Students with learning disabilities and poor academic records due to poverty and other issues are learning skills that could provide
them with a successful future. Students learn and stay engaged from ‘a tiny house project’ and teachers learn by developing a multidisciplinary curriculum and tutorial series for schools and for individuals. Students earn credits in math, science and English while also learning the necessary skills to build their own small house, or possibly to start their own business building tiny houses for others.
Five Tiny House Applications were selected by an independent review team to advance. Teams will be presenting their plans in the “Green Room” and presentations will begin at the 9:40am. Presentations are closed to the public. Those selected to advance are:
• Breathitt County High School & Breathitt County Area Technology Center • Floyd County Area Technology Center • Johnson County Career and Technical Center • Leslie County Area Technolgy Center • Letcher County Area Technology Center
Winners of the 2017-18 Building It Forward Grants will be announced during lunch. ________________________________________________________________________ 2016-17 Building It Forward Grant Recipients Lee County ATC Phelps ATC, Pike County Knott County ATC The 2016-17 Building It Forward Grant Recipients’ Tiny Houses will be on display for public viewing on the plaza in front of the Expo during the FIRE Summit.
