For the third show in our 2016–2017 KeyBank Broadway at The Paramount Season we travel back in time to learn about the author behind everyone’s favorite boy who refused to grow up—Peter Pan.

FINDING NEVERLAND tells the true story of playwright J.M. Barrie, who befriends a widow and her four young sons and, through those friendships, finds the inspiration and courage to become the writer—and the man—he longs to be. These friendships inspired Barrie to create one of the most beloved stories of all time, and in doing so, allowed him to pass along the ever-important lesson he learned along the way: When you believe, you can fly!

It’s this lesson of confidence and faith in one’s self that STG hopes to instill in young people through our various education and community programs. Much like Barrie draws inspiration from the Llewelyn Davies family, we draw inspiration from all of the students and young artists we interact with each year.

Seattle Theatre Group AileyCamp is a place where inspiration abounds. Watching the more than 60 young people from our region flourish as they learned dance and personal confidence was an inspiration that is hard to describe. With daily affirmations that focus on believing in yourself, being kind to others, and always striving to push yourself to be the best you can be, campers are allowed to build their confidence and expand their aspirations. It is a truly transformative experience for all involved.

Through programs like STG AileyCamp, which will be offered for a second year this summer, we strive to support the journey of young people in our community, showing them that there are no limits to what they can accomplish. In many ways, AileyCamp is exactly the ‘neverland’ that many young people are seeking. Our mission will continue to be focused on helping youth in our community find the best of themselves through the arts.

Welcome to tonight’s performance, and we hope you enjoy the incredible story of a loving family, a courageous writer, and the cherished classic their friendship inspired.

WELCOME

THE SECRET GARDENAPRIL 14 – MAY 6, 2017

A hauntingly beautiful musical, The Secret Garden is the celebrated tale of a young orphaned girl, sent to live with a reclusive uncle in a crumbling mansion overrun with spirits of the past. Called “smart and sensitive” and “blessedly grownup” with “a yearning magical pulse” by the Washington Post, this fantastical tale features stunning sets and costumes, a gorgeous score and rich, lush story-telling. This dark and mysterious gothic thriller brings to exuberant life a saga of deception, grief, jealousy, love and ultimately, rebirth. With sun, water, earth and love, any seed can bloom…

22 SEATTLE THEATRE GROUP

The landscape across our city is rapidly changing. One day you might pass and admire a beautifully designed building, and the next day find it demolished to make room for another major hotel, luxury sky rise, or technology campus. The conditions we are experiencing today are much like those that occurred in the early '90s. That was when Ida Cole stepped up to keep The Paramount from becoming prey to a wrecking ball that would have added another parking lot to downtown. Surface parking lots have all but disappeared across the city, but our historic theatres continue to stand tall and link us to a time when art houses were a reflection of the best European craft and design to create luxurious environments for audiences.

If not for your support, our stewardship of 3 historic theatres would not be possible. As the crunch for expansion continues to occur at breakneck speed in Seattle, we are holding fast to the cultural significance each of our three theatres have as iconic, living capsules of history for artists and the public to enjoy. While the performances we host continue to evolve and offer a diverse mix of popular culture and traditional arts, our duty will continue to be that of great caretakers of The Paramount, The Moore, and The Neptune theatres, with your help and support.

Thank you!
