With the help of LearnServe, I found possibilities. You showed me that I can take the impossible and create the possible for change. This will stay with me for a lifetime.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORSDear Friends of LearnServe International,

Last year we had the honor of introducing the LearnServe community to Khadijah Wilson. Khadijah – a ward of the Child and Family Services Agency at the time she joined the 2012 LearnServe Fellows and Zambia programs – decided to launch Foster Teen Expression to offer foster youth greater opportunities to express themselves through art.

As Khadijah prepared to graduate from DC’s Luke C. Moore Academy in May 2013, and attend the Corcoran College of Art and Design with a $40,000 scholarship in the fall, she shared:

“With the help of LearnServe, I found possibilities. You showed me that I can take the impossible that I had created within the confines of my subconscious and create the possible for change. This will stay with me for a LIFETIME.”

Khadijah’s reflections and accomplishments are just one example of why we remain so commit-ted to the work of LearnServe International. And one more example of why we are so grateful to you and your support of LearnServe.

This year 58 LearnServe Fellows followed in Khadijah’s footsteps. Their ventures sought to shed light on domestic violence; inspire environmental education and action; create safe spaces for LGBTQ teens; and build pathways to higher education. Forty three of their peers had the oppor-tunity to work directly alongside social entrepreneurs in Zambia, Paraguay, and Jamaica.

As with Khadijah, the impact of LearnServe programs far transcends the reach of their ventures and their service in country. In LearnServe, students discover the possibilities that shape their academic choices and professional aspirations.

As we enter our 10th Anniversary Year, we celebrate the more than 700 students and teachers who have participated in LearnServe programs. And we celebrate the community that has made this possible.

Thank you – and we look forward to working with you over the coming year.

VISION & MISSIONLearnServe International is building a new generation of globally-minded leaders and en-trepreneurs poised to transform their schools and communities in Washington, DC and around the world.

We envision a region in which every high school student graduates confident and well-versed in business leadership, civic engagement, and cross-cultural fluency—a region in which schools serve as hubs for innovative problem-solving and community action.

LearnServe International sparks high school students’ passion to make a difference and equips them with the knowledge, tools, and relationships to effectively drive solutions to pressing global challenges.

Reflect the diversity of our city.

LearnServe connects an ethnically, socially, and economically diverse group of stu-dents representing public, charter, and in-dependent high schools from Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Translate global into local and local into global.

LearnServe introduces students, teachers, and schools to pressing local and global challenges through the lens of commu-nity leaders and organizations in DC and around the world.

VALUESEngage students and their schools together to effect change.

LearnServe supports students, teachers, and school leadership to incorporate the above values into each school’s mission and programs.

Transform ideas into action.

LearnServe prepares students with the tools, confidence, and experience to re-spond creatively to these challenges.

I loved the diversity of the program, I felt as if different communities came in for one purpose which was to change the world.

FELLOWS PROGRAM MOBILIZES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS The LearnServe Fellows Program mobilizes high school students to improve their schools and communities. Fellows come together from across the Washington, DC area to design and launch their own social ventures. Each April they pitch these ideas to busi-ness and non-profit leaders, for the chance to win up to $200 in matching seed grants. In the process, Fellows learn first-hand the fundramentals of business planning and entrepreneurship - skills they carry into college and beyond.

READ TO SUCCEEDEkram and Rose both arrived in the United States not speaking a word of English. While their elementary school taught them to speak English, they had to discover reading on their own. Read to Succeed plans to help 3rd and 4th grade ELL stu-dents at Brightwood Educational Campus develop a love for reading.

ZAMBIA 2013It was amazing to see how close we could get to the kids at Chikumbuso in a mere three days. I was touched when a little girl said to me, “Don’t forget us when you go back to Ameri-ca!” Chikumbuso actually means “remembrance” in Nyanja, the local language, and after my experiences here, I can say without a doubt that the community is unforgettable.

JAMAICA 2013Because of the way Jamaica’s education system is set up, it’s survival of the fittest. It made me realize that most students back home really take education for granted, and these Ja-maican kids over here are almost fighting for the top spot.

— FREDERICK BARNES, CAPITAL CITY PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL July 2, 2013

NOTES FROM THE FIELDPARAGUAY 2013Living in Dacak, Paraguay with my host family taught me how kind people can be despite major differences. I had auto-matically assumed it would be hard to connect with my host family. By the end of my stay, I had removed “host” from the title and called them my family. I had become a part of their daily routine. The night before I left, my mom told me that she thinks of me as family and that I’ll always be her daughter.

LEARNSERVE ABROADFOSTERS A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVETeams of high school students and teachers work alongside community-based organizations in developing countries. Participants in the 2013 LearnServe Abroad program experienced the day-to-day realities of life in Zambia, Paraguay, and Jamaica; engaged in peer-to-peer exchanges; and supported community efforts around poverty, HIV/AIDS, and education. Students and teachers partic-ipate in five months of pre-travel preparation, introducing them to international development theory, their host countries, and project planning.

I think the best way to describe this trip is as a “snowglobe moment”. Everything is shaken up and when it settles again, my perspective and mindset have been shifted around.
