10 YOGA LIVING March/April 2009

If you’re a student of self-help and growth in the modern world, then you’ve probably heard these three words a lot lately: Abundance,Success and Manifestation.

The popular self-help pundits preach these ideas that relate to achieving fullindividual potential. Their lessons have people meditating on their self worth.Students of these teachings write elaborate statements of purpose. They workto release the patterns of thought that bind them to negative beliefs related toscarcity or self-denial.

Traditional spiritual practitioners find contradictions in this new type of spiritualmessage. The teachings are easily interpreted as crass materialism cloaked inthe market driven garb of catchy platitudes. Members return from these lectures focused on changing their lives for financial gain. They are motivatedto be their true self in order to get a new job or achieve a higher bonus. In someways, this new way of stating spiritual truths may be misunderstood by thelarger public as well as the traditional spiritual seeker.

One slight of biased perception demotes a spiritual word like success to equala bank account overflowing with money. Manifestation may be construed tomeeting that perfect girl or guy, and meeting that lover before next month. Or,abundance means having a lot of stuff, any stuff that others think is good.

However, if you screen these popular concepts through the sieve of truth, then abundance may relate to the magnitude of love in your heart. Successcould be kindness to one unhappy person every day. Manifestation relates tohelping others find a special gift that they possess. Each of these traits has aspiritual definition.

Once we see life in terms of a spiritual perspective, materialism finds its proper place. Yoga teaches that success starts within the deeper parts of thehuman being, specifically within the mind. Yoga practices help people to stabilize the mind through various methods of concentration. Yoga poses help invigorate the body and ultimately improve health and clear the mind.Breathing exercises further focus the mind. Simple living and healthy dietremove stress and allow practitioners to flow with a lifestyle that nurtures ongoing growth and clarity.

With a clear mind, we are all more likely to excel in life. This includes the material and spiritual realms, where success, abundance and manifestationcan be deeply entrenched within the context of a spiritual approach.

14 YOGA LIVING March/April 2009

IN YOGA’S MONASTIC TRADITION, UPON INITIATIONTHE MONK IS GIVEN A ROBE AND AN ALMS BOWL. Asin many of the world’s monastic traditions, the

acceptance of these objects represents a commitment toa life of simplicity, virtue and piety. These basic virtuesseem at odds with a world that is continually influencedby technology, mass media and the pursuit of materialobjects. Upon further reflection, one could come to theconclusion that it is impossible to findpeace in the modern day world withoutretreating to a small corner of theworld somewhere to contemplate themeaning of life in total silence. This isnot true!

While a yearly retreat isn’t a bad idea, we can all work to cultivate non-attachment and peace in the real world.

Yoga defines attachment as the confusion between thehigher self and sensual pleasures. People usually misunderstand this concept and label the pleasurableactivity as being bad. The truth is that the activity inand of itself isn’t the real problem – the real problem isthe lack of control within the pleasure-seeker. Onecandy or potato chip is not going to hurt a person, buthow many people do you know that can eat just one? When we give into repeated cravings for sweets, alcohol, money or other material things, our morality and focusare compromised. We create neurological patterns forsuffering that are reinforced every time we repeat thenegative behaviors. This is especially true in our consumerculture that equates the American dream with the accumulation of material things. The thought that thepleasurable thing will bring happiness is mistaken.

Often the fuel of attachment is avoidance of pain. Inthis light anything from drugs to shopping can be usedin an attempt to distract ourselves. Yet we all know thatonce the party is over or the new shoes get scuffed, thepain persists and we are still left to face ourselves. It ishere that where have a choice to break the cycle bybecoming willing to feel our pain and seek out supportsystems to help us cope and eventually heal.

The material world can be viewed in terms of cause andeffect (also known as Karma). The power of establishingnon-attachment is that unattached mind remains unaffected in all situations and the person possessingthat mind can remain at peace amidst the ups anddowns of life. For example, the non-attached workerviews their job as a chance for spiritual growth. They seeit as chance to learn about their own nature and practice compassion towards others when challengingsituations arise

Another definition of non-attachment is surrenderingthe fruits of an action to God, the Universe or a LargerReality. When a person takes credit for any completedtask or feels that they were the reason for an event happening, the ego latches on to credit and inflatesitself. In reality, no individual credit exists. Think aboutit in terms of cooking dinner. When cooking, you areperforming a task that someone taught you. That same

person may also have given you lifeand tended to you as a child. The foodwas tended to by a farmer somewherethat you may never meet and grewbecause it was blessed with sun andrain. Someone else made your chef’sknife, your cutting board, your dishes, your pots and pans and even yourstove! Your power is being supplied by a group of people working in collaboration to keep you lit, fed and

warm. When we consider all of these contributions, weare able let go of any pride in preparing the meal, andsimply be thankful for the opportunity to eat well andshare a meal with others. In other words, an attachedperson sees the meal as opportunity for praise/credit,while the unattached person sees the cooking of themeal as being a part of the divine and mysteriousprocesses that are at work in the world. As we begin to grasp non-attachment and apply it to ourlives, we are able to see a reality that is independent ofus. This means that the world is not made for us, butsimply contains us. When we realize this, there is nothing to lose and nothing to gain – we become free, and when we are free, we can remain unattached. Our suffering decreases and our quality of life becomesmuch improved.

feel a comfortable stretch to your eye muscles. Whenyou reach the top again, reverse the direction andmove slowly in a circle to the left. Close your eyes andrelax them for a minute afterwards.

Facial Tension ReleaserFor a deep release of facial tension, press firmly and hold eachposition for 3 breaths.

Using your thumbs, find the indentation directly underyour cheekbones. Begin to press all along that ridge, massaging the muscle under the cheekbones from theinside area close to your nose, to the outer edge where itmeets your jaws.

Taking long, slow, deep breaths calms you, relaxes your heart, relieves stress, clears your mind and brings awareness of yourinner being.

FOR MATURING GRACEFULLYYoga can play a part in maturing with grace, by helpingyou maintain strong physical health, glowing inner andouter beauty, and a mind that’s clear, calm, and able to livein a timeless state of consciousness.

Lioness PoseThis pose works on firming your neck muscles, exercises your eyemuscles, and opens your throat. The strong breathing that youpractice in this exercise releases toxins from the body.

1.Sit in Rock Pose (sit on your heels with your feetrelaxed under you. Straighten your spine. Place yourhands on your thighs. To relieve pressure on theknees, sit with a rolled up blanket or firm pillowbetween your buttocks and heels). Then place yourhands on the ground in front of your knees, palms down.

2.Draw your chin in toward your chest. Stretch out yourtongue as far as possible. Open your eyes wide andbreathe through your mouth. Make the sound of alioness. Continue for 1 minute.

What is the relationship between yoga and healthy bone density?Bone production is stimulated when tension and resistance areapplied on the tendons that attach to bones. Yoga, being weightbearing, does just that.

Excerpt from Yoga for Women, by Shakta Kaur Khalsa, published by Dorling Kindersley, 2002.

STAYING YOUNG FOR ALONG, LONG TIME IS AWONDERFUL, BLESSED

WAY TO LIVE. As women, wehave so much to give as wemature; so much wisdom born

of hard earned experience, and so much loving kindnessto share. So let’s keep our good health and vitality so wecan reap the profit of a life well-lived.

One of the very best ways I’ve found to stay young is topractice yoga. The yoga in these exercises belongs to anancient system called Kundalini Yoga. It revitalizes yourphysical health and helps you awaken to your authenticself, so you can live to your greatness.

Just for the fun of it, and because we women love to lookand feel beautiful, you’ll find some yoga exercises herefrom my book, Yoga for Women, for your face and for maturing gracefully. Enjoy, and feel like the beautiful soulthat you are!

FOR YOUR FACEYoga that relaxes, tones, and reconditions your face andskin are important at any age. Begin now--at whatever ageyou are--to keep your face and skin young and healthy. These exercises can be done any time you have a few spare minutes.

Yoga Theory | by Dr. Brandie Nemchenko

THIS IS A SCARY TIME FOR MANYPEOPLE. I AM NOT GOING TOSUGAR COAT THIS ARTICLE

AND TELL YOU THAT EVERYTHINGWILL BE OK RIGHT AWAY, BUT I WILLTELL YOU THAT THERE IS A LESSONIN ALL THIS AND IT WILL BE BETTER.My family learned this lesson fiveyears ago and it has changed who weare forever.

The summer of 2004, we had a gorgeous little 6-year-old daughter, anew house, and a year old chiropracticoffice. We were busy and workedeveryday seeing patients from 9 in themorning to 7 at night.

Things were humming along nicely. We loved our work. Loved ourpatients. And then it all came to asudden, screeching stop. Paymentsfrom a certain insurance companythat made up of 80% of our practicestopped. Not just our practice, butalso many others in the area, includingFamily docs and chiropractors. It wasa “computer glitch.” That computerglitch lasted months. We didn’t knowwhat to do. Behind the scenes fromour happy smiling faces for ourpatients, we were utterly terrified. Bythe time it was over, we had nearly 5months worth of claims paymentsunpaid that were owed and most ofthat was to go to overhead.

Professionals told us to go to ourpatients and explain it and have thempay us. We couldn’t do that becauseit wasn’t right. It wasn’t their fault andit wasn’t ours either.

The calls at home started all times ofthe day, sometimes fifteen times. Wetried to explain to them that weweren’t bad people. We had beenperfect customers for 10 years, didthat not matter? We had never beentalked to like that. We were losing ourhome. Some weekends, my husbandand I couldn’t eat because we had nomoney. We would buy our daughterfood and whatever she didn’t finish,we could have.

During the height of it, our daughterbroke her leg badly in a Halloweenparade and was in a wheelchair. The$40 co-pays and $100 co-pays fromthat injury further compounded thealready sinking ship.

My husband and I were at the bottomof a deep ravine, clinging to eachother and clinging to our dream ofkeeping that business and serving thepatients we loved. Each day, puttingon the happy face, because that’swhat our patients deserved and doingwhat we do makes us happy.

Every night, we would sit on our decksobbing and think how the we weregoing to get out of debt; how we couldhold on what little we had left, includingour sanity. Sad story? Nope. It is not astory of pity. It is real. It happens andunfortunately, it is happening to manymore people these days.

There is a deep and powerful lessonhere that we would not have beenable to learn can’t in any other way: anew life that is clear and honest. Weappreciated things that we neverwould have noticed before like thekindness of strangers, the beauty ofour child laughing, a walk in a beauti-ful park with the dogs, snuggling on acouch with the family and reading abook from the library. No fancy newtechnology to play with, no pedicuresor $5 lattes from the coffee shop. Nobuying our kids toys so they could be“happy”. Just being with them, lovingthem, and telling them how specialthey are.

In looking back at it now, I regret nothing.I cherish it.

Never before, did I see so clear thanwhen we were at the bottom. Whenwe were stripped of it all, I knew I hadmy husband and we had each other -he was my best friend. I knew I hadmy daughter and my family andfriends. We appreciated that we hadour health and loved each other.

Today, that situation is far away in myrear-view mirror but the memory andemotion is clear. I have a calm feelingabout the economy because I’vealready taken this road. It gives me abetter perspective to help my patientsdeal with the incredible stress they areunder and help and empathize withthem, because I have been there. Ican honestly say, “I understand. I getyour pain.”

The lesson is that life has absolutelynothing to do with money. It may feellike it. You can’t buy it. You can’t buyyour health. You can’t buy your sanity. You can’t buy a family. You can’t buylove. Take care of what really matters, which is you and your health. Breathe.Be kind to yourself and to others. These things you can control.Remember, none of the externalthings will kill you, although it may feellike it at times.

What can you do if you are in this?Surround yourself with positive, supportive people. Write people a letter about what you like about themand give it to them. Take a yoga classto learn to breathe and get centered.Get a massage from a friend. Take awalk. If you need professional help, find a healthcare practitioner in youinsurance network or who haveaffordable plans to get help in thisjourney like a counselor, a chiropractoror an acupuncturist. Find ways to helpyourself in your new budget. Thereare options to help.

You may find, that your lesson isaround the corner and the ride is allworth it in the end.
