Why choose a communication degree?A bachelor’s degree in communication is designed to provide students with a balance of communication theory and practical application through simulation and actual presentation. The study of communication is both scientific and aesthetic. Students are given the knowledge to create and appreciate more completely the different aspects of communication.

A communication degree can increase student knowl-edge in interpersonal communication, organizational communication, small group communication, public communication, mass communication, public relations, advertising, and performance communication. It will also help students who want to branch out into other areas such as law, ministry, medicine, business, politics, mass media, negotiation, consulting, theatre, and social services. The degree can prepare a student for admission to graduate school.

Communication majors may choose an emphasis in:• Business Communication • Speech Communication• Theatre

Bachelor of Arts in Business CommunicationBusiness Communication is a unique and evolving field that addresses many communication issues as they relate to business management and the interpersonal challenges of today’s workplace. Issues such as multicultural diver-sity, negotiation, and dispute resolution are focal points throughout the program. The curriculum is a balance of both academic theory and real-world applications. This field of study explores important topics such as leader-ship, business acumen, technological expertise, interper-sonal and intercultural communication, and organizational management.

Bachelor of Arts in Speech CommunicationSpeech Communication focuses upon oral communication as a tool for doing the work of social life. It considers the reasons why people communicate, the methods they

use to communicate and the consequences of their interaction. The program establishes means with which to understand, evaluate, and improve the process of human communication and to balance practical application, criticism, and theory. This enables students to analyze and evaluate their own as well as others’ communicative behavior. It allows them to become more effective communicators in their personal and professional lives.

Bachelor of Arts in TheatreThe Department of Theatre offers a major and minor in theatre. The art of theatre depends upon knowledge of the entire process of theatrical production. To that end, the theatre curriculum includes courses emphasizing the interdependence of all aspects of production: acting, di-recting, and technical theatre. The program will advance students toward mastery of the creative areas of theatrical production; provide students opportunities to acquire and apply the art of theatre; prepare students for careers in education, acting, directing, technical theatre, and graduate study in theatre arts. Competitive auditions are open to all members of the college community, regardless of major.

High Performance...At York College you will explore a broad spectrum of theatre crafts and theories within the context of a liberal arts education. Whether you take theatre as a major, as a minor, as individual classes or by participating in produc-tions, you will be encouraged to discover new skills and perspectives. We carry the philosophy of a well-rounded liberal arts education into your theatre education, and by graduation you can expect to have acted, built sets, created costumes, hung lights, designed, directed and worked in the box office.

Performance opportunities:• Two main stage productions• Traveling Children’s Theatre• Emerging Directors One-Act Productions• Senior Productions

Quotes from York College Alumni“The YC Theater Department was my home away from home. Each production challenged me to learn something new. The characters I played were my best friends and worst enemies, and by stepping into their shoes, I learned life lessons that impact me today..”

— Jessica Agler, Class of 2006

“The interpersonal communication skills that I have learned and developed from such highly qualified professors has been, and will continue to be, invaluable throughout my professional career.”

— Caleb Rush, Class of 2010

“I enjoy acting, but I discovered I am really good at stage management. If John Baker hadn’t suggested that course to me, I would probably have given up on theatre.”

— Melinda Rhodebeck, Class of 2005

“The professors are extremely knowledgeable in the Business Communication program at York College. I became a confident and effective speaker and communicator, which is vital in my role as Human Resources Manager.

— Chelsea Mullinix, Class of 2010

“I can’t thank John Baker and the theatre department enough for helping me to gain valuable personal confidence and character during my years at YC. The relationships I formed through children’s theatre and the main stage productions will last forever.”

— Del (Adam T. Hoehn), Class of 2004

“The theater department at YC helped shape me as a person. Through numerous successes on the stage, helping with crew activities, and eventually directing my own show, I grew in my skills and in my confidence. I was able to use my theater training after graduation in a professional setting as I worked as a high school speech/theater coach. Teaching others helped me to realize the quality of the education I received.”

— Chrystal Houston, Class of 2003
