Earth Day/Arbor Day GiveawaySaturday, April 25, 12 – 3 PMThe first 100 New City/West Nyack families to show their library cards will receive a Japanese Larch seedling.

The Japanese Larch is a sun-loving, deciduous conifer. This pyramidal tree has slender, pendulous branches, and clusters of bright green needles that turn a golden yellow in the fall before dropping.

You can take one for your yard, where it could reach a height of up to 70 feet, or take one to make a Bonzai plant for your home! Teen volunteers will assist you in creating this decorative indoor planter on the library veranda.

We’re Still Here!We are now twenty years into the 21st century. Have you noticed something? We’re still here. Your local public library. Reports of our demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Yes, that staid and sometimes stuffy institution of your youth where the cardigan-wrapped, sensibly-shoed, and humorless librarian roams is gone. In its place has arisen a vibrant community center whose mission remains the same as ever: To connect people, information, and ideas. Our focus has shifted from physical books to electronic formats, from hushed, solitary study to collaborative learning, and from book-based education to hands-on creation.

How about you? Are you still here? Then you need to be counted. The 2020 United States Census will soon be underway, and it is imperative that we all participate. Statistics from the census are used to apportion federal funding, determine congressional seats, plan for infrastructure and community development, and so much more. The library staff stands at the ready to help you with the new online format. Be sure to stop by the reference desk or dial ext. 126 if you have any questions. — Marianne Gallagher, Director

Census 2020

The U.S. Constitution requires a count of every resident of the United States once every 10 years. Every resident counts, including children and non-residents. Our community benefits the most when everyone participates. When you respond to the census, you help our community get its fair share of federal funds.

Look for your invitation to participate in the 2020 U.S. Census in the mail. You will have the option to respond to the questionnaire online, by mail or by phone. Responding to the census is easy, safe, and important — and your information is confidential!

TIMELINE March: Households will receive an invitation to respond online to the census.

April: The Census Bureau will send a letter and a paper questionnaire to nonrespondents.

May & June: The bureau will attempt to conduct in-person interviews with remaining nonrespondents.
