BORDEAUXRED WINE

CHÂTEAU KIRWAN 20153e cru, AC Margaux

TASTING NOTE: A sleek wine with plenty of tannins, but they are already so well integrated that this has a very elegant personality. The long finish is rather mineral and very pure. Drink or hold. Score: 93 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)

98566 (XD) 750 mL $130.00

CHÂTEAU LANGOA BARTON 20103e cru, AC Saint-Julien

TASTING NOTE: Tightly focused, with a beam of cassis and blackberry fruit framed by integrated espresso and charcoal notes. The ample structure drives the polished finish, allowing extra notes of plum sauce, pastis and blueberry coulis to stride through. Shows serious grip at the very end. Best from 2016 through 2035. Score: 94 (James Molesworth, winespectator.com, March 31, 2013)

454207 (XD) 750 mL $156.00

CHÂTEAU LES ORMES 2012AC Saint-Julien

TASTING NOTE: Alluring roasted coffee bean nose, augmented by pepper and spice on the black fruits. Seductive Saint-Julien texture, displaying finesse and evolution, with mushroom tints to the intense fruit, and a refreshing end. Score: 95 (Decanter World Wine Awards, 2019)

648295 (XD) 750 mL $69.00

CHÂTEAU PICHON LONGUEVILLE COMTESSE DE LALANDE 2003AC Pauillac Grand Cru Classé

TASTING NOTE: Made from a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, this spectacular 2003 hits all the sweet spots on the palate. A glorious bouquet of cedarwood, jammy black currants, cherries, licorice and truffle is followed by a dense, opulently textured, full-bodied wine with terrific purity and freshness as well as deep, velvety textured tannins. Enjoy this beauty over the next 10-12 years. Drink date: 2014-2026. Score: 95 (Robert Parker Jr., robertparker.com, Aug. 27, 2014)

15947 (XD) 750 mL $196.00

CHÂTEAU PRIEURE LICHINE 20154e cru, AC Margaux

TASTING NOTE: Some very ripe dark-plum aromas with a wealth of sweet spices and earthy notes. The palate has an impressively rich, suave and smooth core of black fruit with a powerful palate that delivers concentrated and intense structure. This is superb Margaux. Try from 2022. Score: 96 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)

15953 (XD) 750 mL $110.00

CLOS BEAUREGARD 2015AC Pomerol

TASTING NOTE: Aromas of dark fruits, tile, cedar, dried basil leaves, and smoked almonds. Full-bodied, tight and focused with polished tannins and a beautiful long finish. Love the texture and balance. Try it in 2021or later. Score: 94 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 2, 2018)

16242 (XD) 750 mL $69.00

DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER 2008AC Pessac-Léognan Grand Cru Classé

Dense, powerful wine that impresses both with its rich fruit and its balanced tannins. The whole wine is finely integrated, black berry flavors shot through with acidity and touches of wood. Certainly a wine for aging. Cellar Selection.

Score: 94 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2011)

BURGUNDY

CÔTE DE NUITSRED WINE

DOMAINE ALAIN HUDELOT-NOËLLAT LES BEAUMONTS VOSNE-ROMANÉE 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts surpasses its showing from barrel, unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackberries, orange rind, peonies, potpourri and spices. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit, refined tannins and an appealing sense of completeness. Drink date: 2025-2045. Score: 93 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, Jan. 9, 2020)

16268 (XD) 750 mL $270.00

DOMAINE ALAIN HUDELOT-NOËLLAT LES MURGERS NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers is open and demonstrative, bursting with aromas of cherries, red berries and plums mingled with savory notes of grilled game and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and charming, with a generous core of fruit and melting tannins. Drink date: 2022-2037. Score: 92 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, Jan. 9, 2020)

16271 (XD) 750 mL $176.00

G. ROBLOT-MARCHAND LES FUÉES CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 1ER CRU 2015AC

soils of the southeast-facing Les Fuées premier cru. The site affords the grapes exposure to the morning sun, giving them ample sunshine for ripening, while cool evenings assure freshness and balance.

13777 (XD) 750 mL $120.00

LOUIS LATOUR LES QUATRE JOURNAUX ROMANÉE SAINT-VIVANT GRAND CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Hints of ripe and bright aromas of strawberries and cherries. Floral and very pretty. Full-bodied and compact with pretty fruit. Vertical and structured. Better after 2022. Score: 95 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Feb. 12, 2019)

179598 (XD) 750 mL $860.00

PIERRE BRISSET LES ROUGES DU DESSUS VOSNE-ROMANÉE 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: Chocolatey cherries on the nose – quite delicious, and more forward than in previous vintages – but it steps back into its customary restraint on the palate, as if apologising for an unseemly show of emotions. Broad red-silk flag across the mouth, spiky cumin and caraway spice, elegantly honed tannins arching high over the fruit. Drink date: 2022-2028. Score: 16.5 out of 20 (Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com, June 14, 2019)

13779 (XD) 750 mL $244.00

ROCHE DE BELLENE CHARMES-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2012AC

TASTING NOTE: As always with a grand cru from Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine shows immense power. It is dominated by black fruits as well as signs of the 60% wood aging. Behind, the red cherry fruits are developing along with the lively acidity. It needs to age and should not be drunk before 2019. Ranked #99 in the 2015 Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Cellar Selections. Score: 95 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, July 1, 2015)

235390 (XD) 750 mL $320.00

CÔTE DE BEAUNERED WINE

DOMAINE TAWSE FRÉMIETS VOLNAY 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru contains 50% whole clusters, matured in 20% new oak. It has quite an intense, slightly broody, marine-influenced bouquet, the oak discreet in its supporting role. The palate is well balanced and quite concentrated, with touches of black olive infusing the black fruit. The taut, linear finish feels long and tender. Excellent. Drinking window: 2021-2036. Score: 91-93 (Neal Martin, vinous.com, Jan. 2019)

577197 (XD) 750 mL $98.00

HENRI DE VILLAMONT CHASSAGNE- MONTRACHET MORGEOT 1ER CRU 2015AC

TASTING NOTE: This is a ripe wine, concentrated with spice, wood aging as well as the rich fruit of the vintage. Its bold fruits are generous and opulent, demanding aging. The wine comes from one of the best known of the Chassagne premier crus. Drink from 2020. Score: 91 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, Nov. 1, 2017)

15951 (XD) 750 mL $63.00

VINCENT GIRARDIN CLOS SAINT-JEAN CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Bursting from the glass with expressive aromas of berry fruit compote and dried flowers, the 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean is medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, with an ample core of fruit, melting tannins and tangy acids, concluding with a precise and delicately fragrant finish. This captures all the site’s inherent fleshiness but none of the potential structural rusticity that so often accompanies it. Its gourmand, lavish profile makes it already irresistible. Drink date: 2020-2036.

Score: 92 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, April 30, 2019)

15937 (XD) 750 mL $100.00

WHITE WINE

DOMAINE LATOUR-GIRAUD CUVÉE CHARLES MAXIME MEURSAULT 2017AC

“.... the [2017] whites are within touching distance of the storied 2014s in the opinion of many (and possibly equal or exceed them in places according to some) ...” (Rupert Millar, thedrinksbusiness.com, Jan. 14, 2019). Expect this one to be a ripe, sensual wine, with depth, elegance and freshness, suggestions of lime citrus and white pepper, and a refined saline minerality.

299784 (XD) 750 mL $82.00

DOMAINE POTINET-AMPEAU PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 2014AC

Domaine Potinet-Ampeau has been worked by the Durrieu family for five generations. The family began keeping “vins de garde” (laying down wines to age before selling), and so Potinet-Ampeau has an impressive array of older vintages. The white wines of Burgundy’s 2014 vintage are ripe, juicy, forward expressions with excellent intensity and structure, marrying the richness of 2012 with the freshness of 2013.

16241 (XD) 750 mL $105.00

LOUIS JADOT BÂTARD-MONTRACHET GRAND CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: There are eight barrels of the excellent 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (Maison Louis Jadot), an impressive wine that unfurls in the glass with aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, pear, pastry cream and honeycomb. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and satiny, with more concentration and cut than this year’s Bienvenues, with an elegant sense of completeness and a long, lively finish. This will be well worth seeking out.

8 VINTAGES

VINCENT GIRARDIN LES CLOUS MEURSAULT 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: From a hectare of domaine holdings that has been biodynamically farmed for the last three years, the 2017 Meursault Les Clous reveals an attractive bouquet of Anjou pear, lemon oil, white flowers and drawn butter. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, tangy and tensile, with a pure, mineral-driven profile that’s defined by its hillside origins. Score: 89-91 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, Jan. 31, 2019)

15949 (XD) 750 mL $100.00

CHABLISWHITE WINE

DOMAINE COURTAULT BEAUROY CHABLIS 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: A solidly crafted premier cru that delivers a classic expression of Chablis. There’s considerable depth to the flavours, with lemon citrus and apricot standing out, followed by a sharply defined mineral-led finish. The mouthfeel has a pleasing roundness. Very fresh and crisp. This will be ideal for seafood. (Vintages panel, Jan. 2020)

15952 (XD) 750 mL $41.00

DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE LES PREUSES CHABLIS GRAND CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: An exotic, totally beguiling wine, the 2017 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru melds together rich fruit with saline, mineral-drenched intensity. White flowers, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks add tremendous lift to this striking, utterly captivating Chablis. A wine of superb classicism, the Preuses has it all. That’s all there is to it. Drinking window: 2025-2037. Score: 97 (Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Jan. 2020)

391276 (XD) 750 mL $133.00

Score: 93-95 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, Jan. 31, 2019)

445007 (XD) 750 mL $617.00

ROCHE DE BELLENE VIEILLES VIGNES MEURSAULT 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: Ripe, full in the mouth and with good balance between acidity and ripe yellow fruits, this rich wine shows concentration from low-yielding vines. Fresh apples partner with peach flavors. Drink from 2020. Score: 90 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, April 1, 2019)

241091 (XD) 750 mL $98.00

VINCENT GIRARDIN LE LIMOZIN MEURSAULT 2016AC

Burgundy’s 2016 vintage was the smallest crop in a decade. But remember, big things come in small packages. The 2016 vintage in Burgundy stands out as a terrific year, with the wines delivering concentrated fruit, bright acidity and a precisely articulated sense of terroir. Le Limozin lieu-dit sits just below Les Genevrières premier cru, and its wines offer near-premier-cru quality. A great buy.

15938 (XD) 750 mL $100.00

VINCENT GIRARDIN LES CHAUMÉES CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées reveals aromas of crisp green pear, toasted nuts, spices and honey, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping palate that’s tangy, precise and penetrating. This is a classy, deftly balanced Chaumées that should offer a broad drinking window. Score: 90-92 (William Kelley, robertparker.com, Jan. 31, 2019)

15948 (XD) 750 mL $134.00

CÔTE CHALONNAISERED WINE

DOMAINE BELLEVILLE CLOS L’EVEQUE MERCUREY 1ER CRU 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: From clay-limestone soils that err on the side of limestone, this wine is gorgeously elegant with real power through the mid-palate, softened by a grilled caramel edge. I love this – it’s serious but has grace and lightness of touch. It closes in on the finish, letting you know that it’s going to exceed expectations with some ageing. 35% new oak. Drinking window 2019-2036. Score: 94 (Jane Anson, Decanter, May 22, 2019)

15950 (XD) 750 mL $61.00

RHÔNE

NORTHERN RHÔNERED WINE

FRANÇOIS VILLARD MALFONDIÈRES CROZES HERMITAGE 2017AC

TASTING NOTE: From 45-year-old vines in Mercurol, Villard’s 2017 Crozes Hermitage Malfondieres was vinified as whole clusters in an oak vat, then aged in used barrels for 18 months. Cassis and black cherry notes lead the way in this medium to full-bodied wine, which is graced with hints of crushed stone, a velvety feel and some faintly stemmy notes (herbal tea) on the finish. Tasted twice (once blind) about a week apart, it came across more structured and chewier on one occasion than the other, although the quality was otherwise consistent. Drink date: 2020-2028. Score: 91 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Jan. 31, 2020)

16234 (XD) 750 mL $74.00

9 VINTAGES

DOMAINE DU PEGAU CUVÉE LAURENCE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2014AC

TASTING NOTE: This wine shows complexities of cocoa, leather, rose petal and earth that juxtapose mouthwatering blackberry and plum flavors. Its fruit is at the forefront but anchored by a mineral undertow that should intensify with age. It’s a beauty already, framed by fine, chalky tannins. Editors’ Choice. Score: 98 (Anna Lee Iijima, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2019)

168161 (XD) 750 mL $135.00

XAVIER ARCANE L’ETOILE BEAUMES DE VENISEAP

TASTING NOTE: Coming from the higher elevation sites, the NV Beaumes de Venise Arcane Etoile is another elegant, finesse-oriented wine from Xavier that has both richness and freshness. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre as well as a small amount of Viognier from 2015, 2016, and 2017, it has something profound in its texture and balance. Notes of black raspberries, currants, dried flowers, lavender, and pepper are followed by a beautiful, full-bodied, elegant wine that might just be one of the greatest red wines to come from Beaumes de Venise. Score: 95 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Aug. 16, 2019)

15942 (XD) 750 mL $40.00

WHITE WINE

CLOS DE L’ORATOIRE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE BLANC 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: While this dry wine’s crisp apple, white grapefruit and pear notes are understated on the nose and palate, its opulent, creamy mouthfeel is the showcase. Full bodied and honeyed yet not heavy, it shows hints of cashew, earth and saline complexities in develop-ment. Although drinking elegantly now, it should be even better from 2026. Cellar Selection.

assorted sweet strawberry and raspberry fruits emerge from the 2017 Côte Rôtie Laurus, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a silky elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s still tight and closed on the palate, so give bottles 2-3 years. Maturity: 2023-2033. Score: 91+ (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Dec. 12, 2019)

13402 (XD) 750 mL $80.00

SOUTHERN RHÔNERED WINE

CHAPELLE SAINT THEODORIC LA GUIGASSE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: As I predicted last year, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Guigasse has smoothed out considerably and seemingly absorbed the stemmy elements I noted previously. Still not yet bottled, it now offers wonderful fruit purity and intensity. Raspberries and cherries are delivered on a full-bodied, rich and creamy palate that somehow avoids any sense of heaviness. It looks to be a stunning example of 70-year-old Grenache from the sandy lieu-dit of the same name. Drink date: 2020-2035. Score: 95-97 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Aug. 31, 2018)

378174 (XD) 750 mL $105.00

DOMAINE DE LA SOLITUDE RÉSERVE SECRÈTE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2016AC

TASTING NOTE: The top cuvée is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Secrete, a deep, rich, massive wine that stays balanced, pure and elegant. Crème de cassis, pepper, crushed violets, and new saddle leather notes all give way to a rockingly textured, full-bodied, balanced beauty that’s going to keep for 20+ years. I wasn’t able to get the final blend, which changes every year for this cuvée, but it’s almost always a mix of Grenache and Syrah. Maturity: 2022-2042. Score: 97+ (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Aug. 28, 2018)

499871 (XD) 750 mL $142.00

Score: 93 (Anna Lee Iijima, Wine Enthusiast, July 1, 2018)

15939 (XD) 750 mL $53.00

MICHEL GASSIER LOU COUCARDIÉ BLANC 2016AC Costières de Nîmes

TASTING NOTE: From the Bec vineyard located in the southern part of the appellation, the 2016 Costières de Nîmes Blanc Lou Coucardié is another tour de force from this appellation. Buttered apple, orange blossom, hints of apricot and spice all give way to [a] rich, fleshy, yet fresh and pure white that’s going to shine on the dinner table. This cuvée is 40% each of Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, with the balance Viognier, aged on lees in 500-liter barrels. Score: 93 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Oct. 19, 2017)

406249 (XD) 750 mL $36.00

ALSACEWHITE WINE

PIERRE SPARR MAMBOURG GEWURZTRAMINER 2017AC Alsace Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: A concentrated nose of Damask rose and juicy peach makes for a heady opening on this wine. A hint of grapefruit-peel spice plays on the juicy, medium-sweet palate. Along with citrus freshness, this creates a lovely balance of richness and freshness. Score: 90 (Anne Krebiehl, MW, Wine Enthusiast, Nov. 1, 2019)

10 VINTAGES

RENÉ MURÉ CÔTE DE ROUFFACH RIESLING 2016AC Alsace

TASTING NOTE: Beautifully aromatic, featuring lots of mineral and honey on the nose and palate, along with flavors of poached quince, sliced almond, star fruit and fleur de sel. Statuesque and framed by firm acidity, this is light-to medium-bodied, with an intense, mineral-driven finish. Drink now through 2030. Score: 93 (Alison Napjus, winespectator.com, Dec. 31, 2018)

634741 (XD) 750 mL $30.00

TRIMBACH CUVÉE FRÉDÉRIC ÉMILE RIESLING 2011AC Alsace

TASTING NOTE: For a seven-year-old dry white, this has great vitality. The more air it gets, the more candied-citrus, pear and dried-herb aromas emerge. Although the wine’s frame is on the sleek side, there’s serious concentration. The finish is very long with a cascade of herbal and mineral notes. Drink or hold. Score: 94 (James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, May 28, 2018)

MIDIRED WINE

CHÂTEAU L’HOSPITALET LA RÉSERVE ROUGE 2018La Clape, AC Coteaux du Languedoc

You can expect this classic blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre to express red and black berry, some smoke, herb and spice tones and underlying chocolate and vanilla. Enjoy it tonight with grilled lamb or give it 5-8 years in your cellar.

AUSTRIA A rich, fragrant, high-scoring Grüner Veltliner offers insight into the refined character of the Kremstal region.

WHITE WINE

TURK RIED KREMSER THURNERBERG GRÜNER VELTLINER 2017DAC Kremstal

TASTING NOTE: The fragrance of crushed citrus leaves creates a heady opening on the nose before ripe pear and lemon balm follow. The palate presents a picture of concentrated zestiness with edges of white pepper, salty preserved lemon and arugula, all wrapped in pear-fruited richness. Zest also characterizes the finish of this wine, which carries its full-flavored richness lightly. Score: 95 (Anne Krebiehl, MW, Wine Enthusiast, March 1, 2019)

GERMANY Elegance and charm come to the fore with this exquisite, cellar-worthy Riesling from Mosel.

MOSELWHITE WINE

J.J. PRUEM WEHLENER SONNENUHR RIESLING KABINETT 2018Prädikatswein

TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett offers a delicately creamy nose made of cassis, floral elements, apricot, and chalky minerals. The wine proves delicately tickly on the overall creamy and quite playful palate, and leaves a nice feel of passion fruit, melon, herbs, and a touch of cardamom in the long and superbly elegant finish. The sweetness is already nicely integrated. 2023-2033. Score: 91 (Jean Fisch & David Rayer, moselfinewines.com, Oct. 2019)

ITALYBreathtaking expressions from Piedmont, Tuscany and Sicily, to name but a few of the eye-catching regions in this selection.

CAMPANIARED WINE

SALVATORE MOLETTIERI VIGNA CINQUE QUERCE TAURASI 2012DOCG

TASTING NOTE: A deep, plush, full-bodied red, with dense tannins that are well-meshed to flavors of black cherry pâte de fruit, olive paste, cured tobacco, spice box, iron and graphite. Big and brooding, this nonetheless maintains a sense of elegance throughout. Best from 2022 through 2032. Highly recommended. Score: 95 (Alison Napjus, winespectator.com, Nov. 30, 2019)

This Cab Franc is sourced from vines planted in limestone and clay soils at between 80 and 200 metres elevation in the hills of the Collio region. You can expect it to suggest a wealth of dark fruit, herbs and spice, framed by mineral and smoke tones. It’s a wine that will drink well tonight with grilled steak or lamb but will also continue to evolve for a further 8-10+ years.

Sauvignon and Merlot. I tasted bottle number 130 of 1,035 bottles released. In the U.S. and U.K. markets, this wine is named Alberico. In Italy and Asian markets, the wine is simply called Rosso Fiorano. Showing lavish Lazio sunshine and ripeness, the wine is redolent of dark fruit and blackberry preserves. I do note, however, that the wine’s ripeness does push the boundaries. You get some savory aromas of bacon fat and cured meat followed by raisins and dried prune. There is a distant point of sweetness in the mouth as well. Drink date: 2019-2029. Score: 91 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Oct. 17, 2019)

PETROLO GALATRONA 2017DOC Val d’Arno di Sopra

TASTING NOTE: Despite the hardships of the vintage, Luca Sanjust and the team at Petrolo poured all their focus and attention into creating this wine. The 2017 Galatrona shows a hot-vintage interpretation of Merlot that never feels too ripe or heavy. Instead, this wine ushers forth a remarkable succession of balsam herb-like aromas with Mediterranean shrub, rosemary essence and wild sage. Those garden-fresh aromas accompany the dark blackberry fruit that gives this wine its important center of gravity. The Merlot harvest came two weeks early in 2017, and yields were greatly reduced. I am suggesting a slightly shorter drinking window for the 2017 vintage compared to the cellar-worthy 2016 edition. Drink date: 2020-2035. Score: 95 (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, Aug. 30, 2019)

TASTING NOTE: Here is a wine I always look forward to tasting. The 2015 Etna Rosso Barbagalli is made with extraordinary pre-phylloxera vines that range up to 120 years old. You definitely taste the rich concentration and focused aromatic intensity that is so unique to old vines. This wine is characterized by the very steady, slow-paced nature of its aromas that unfold with elegance and grace. Small forest berry is followed by licorice, tar and dried violets. To the palate, the wine is very firm, tightly knit and embroidered with lovely little details and nuances. The wine is aged in 700-liter oak casks (lightly toasted) for 20 months. TASTING NOTE: I absolutely love this profound and beautiful Syrah from Tuscany. The 2016 Syrah Collezione Privata offers a unique interpretation of the grape that delivers much of the heft, power, smokiness and textural richness of the French grape, however it also shows purely Italian flares of grilled herb, blue flower, moist earth and Toscano cigar. Bold cherry fruit fills the core of this wine, and there is plenty of padding and extra richness at the edges. The wine is rich, velvety and long in terms of mouthfeel. It ages in oak for 18 months. CASTELLO DELLA SALA CERVARO DELLA SALA 2018IGT Umbria(Marchesi Antinori)

TASTING NOTE: Compared to the 2017 vintage that shows a more accessible and full-bodied style, the 2018 Cervaro della Sala is a classic edition – it’s about as classic as I have ever tasted this

landmark white from Umbria to be. This cooler vintage prizes finesse and elegance, and those traits are matched by efforts in the winery to accomplish that same goal. On many levels, the 2018 vintage opens a new chapter for Cervaro della Sala, with a stronger emphasis on preserved lemon, crisp pear and crushed mineral. The wine offers beautiful freshness and linearity. I must also mention that this vintage is released while the fruit is still a bit closed or shy. CATENA ZAPATA MUNDUS BACILLUS TERRAE ADRIANNA VI NEYARD MALBEC 2016Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: The 2016 Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae is from a cold and rainy El Niño vintage that broke the mold of typical Mendoza weather. The grapes were picked a bit later and achieved a slow, perfect ripening while retaining very good freshness. They used 50% full clusters in this cooler year. The wine was pressed before it finished fermenting (in concrete), and the juice – without skins, pips or stems – finished fermenting like a white in the foudre. When I tasted the wines after bottling, this felt a bit dizzy, with the aromatics coming and going, sometimes showing a little open. But the wine settled in bottle, and the palate shows the core of acidity that lifts the wine and provides incredible freshness; the tannins are ultra refined, and there is great overall balance. TASTING NOTE: Consistently among the best red blends in Argentina, Nicolás combines Cabernet Sauvignon with 31% Malbec, aged in 20% new wood in 2016. There was no Agrelo component in this vintage, so it’s a cuvée from Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira. Elegant, perfumed and refined, this reflects the cooler vintage. 2021-32. ALMAVIVA 2017Puente Alto, Maipo Valley(Concha y Toro & Baron Philippe de Rothschild)

TASTING NOTE: The aromas of blackberry leaves and iodine are wild and exotic here with mussel shells and earth underneath. Full-bodied, tight and chewy with powerful tannins that show muscle. LUIS FELIPE EDWARDS MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014DO Colchagua Valley

TASTING NOTE: This is the first version of LFE’s most ambitious cabernet. It’s from a selection of high-altitude vineyards planted on hills in Puquillay, 900 meters above sea level in 2005. The idea, according to winemaker Nicolás Bizzarri, was to try to prove that it was possible to make a Colchagua cabernet that rivals the best in Chile. And that’s what they’ve done. The wine was aged in barrels for 18 months and then spent another 2 years in the bottle. It’s a cabernet that’s focused on fruit flavors. Unlike other top Chilean cabernets, it doesn’t have the mentholated notes (like some from Maipo Alto) but instead concentrates on the fruity and earthy flavors in a wine that has medium body but tremendous structure. Its tannins latch on to the palate and easily hold up all of those fruit flavors. Score: 96 (Descorchados, 2020)

SANTA RITA PEWËN CARMENÈRE 2018Apalta, Colchagua Valley

TASTING NOTE: The Quijada family, which owns very old carménère vineyards in the Apalta zone in the Colchagua Valley, has had a contract to sell grapes to Santa Rita since the 1990s. That fruit has been used for Pewën, the house’s top carménère, since 2004. The style of that fruit, however, has changed significantly, especially since the 2017 vintage, when winemaker Sebastián Labbé decided to move up the harvest date, and, basically, stop being afraid of the variety’s herbal notes. Those herbal notes are here (the same ones that may have frightened many off a decade ago), accompanied by red fruit and spices in a tense wine with unusually crunchy acidity and fruit that’s very generous, and yet very deep at the same time. TASTING NOTE: From 50 year old vines in ultra-high density planting (11,000 vines/hectare, according to Nicolas Potel), the nose is exceptionally pretty, ripe but fresh, exuding red berry-cherry fruit in a sophisticated and refined fashion. I love the touch of licorice, the gentle leafy-stemminess, the delicate wood spice, and the overall complexity. The result is a full-bodied wine with oodles of mixed cherry and blueberry fruit. It’s silky and long, a pure delight to drink for its sheer deliciousness and hedonism. Like the other limited-edition wines from Usseglio, only 3,000 bottles were produced. Drink date: 2019-2027. Score: 96 (Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com, Sept. 30, 2019)

TRIMBACH CLOS SAINTE HUNE RIESLING 2014AC Alsace(F. E. Trimbach, prop.-vitic.)

TASTING NOTE: A stunning wine with ethereal aromas of sliced apple, sliced pear and mineral character. Flowers and honeysuckle too. Full-bodied, very tight and dense. It goes so deep and beautiful. Bright and tangy acidity. Has the depth of a great vintage of grand cru Burgundy but is so Clos Ste. Hune in character. Muscularly feminine and breathtaking. KRUG BRUT ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE23ème Édition, AC

TASTING NOTE: Krug’s releases have always shown a wonderful balance between fruit and maturity. This rosé, the 23rd blending, is no exception. TASTING NOTE: A blend of Carignan, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache grown at Gerard Bertrand’s father’s estate, the 2016 Corbieres Boutenac Chateau de Villemajou Grand Vin is a muscular, grippy wine that may have excellent aging potential or may be too tannic for it’s own good. Hints of crushed stone and pencil shavings mark the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate adds notes of cherries and green peppercorns, leading into a dry, tannic finish. SICILYRED WINE

PLANETA MAROCCOLI SYRAH 2015IGT Sicilia Menfi

TASTING NOTE: Syrah and Sicily are two peas in a pod, and the 2015 Menfi Syrah Maroccoli affirms this fact with exuberant precision and charm. This wine is packed tight with dark fruit, tobacco, spice, bacon fat and even a touch of bitter chocolate. Both Syrah and Sicily love the sunshine and the summer heat, and luckily, both of these things were delivered with abundance in this happy vintage. Drink date: 2019-2025. PLANETA COMETA 2018DOC Sicilia Menfi

TASTING NOTE: The 2018 Sicilia Menfi Cometa is a unique wine that has about half the creaminess and richness of the special Didacus bottling (that is of course Chardonnay) but with more quirky authenticity and brightness here. The grape is Fiano, and this age-worthy variety tends to offer abundant pear and Golden Delicious apple. There is some creamy Sicilian puff pastry on the close. Drink date: 2019-2028. MONTESTEFANO RISERVA BARBARESCO 2015DOCG(Produttori del Barbaresco)

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is one of the deeper wines in this range. Ample, broad and creamy, the 2015 has a ton of richness and power on display. It is also one of the wines in this range where the personality and style of the vineyard are very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and spice build into the racy finish as this powerful, beautifully resonant Barbaresco shows all it’s got. Drinking window: 2022-2040. VIRNA BAROLO DI BAROLO 2015DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Barolo del Comune del Barolo offers dark fruit flavors with berry fruit, rose hip and grilled herb. There is a delicate side to the wine that you recognize in the fine and pretty quality of the primary aromas, but this hot-vintage expression also delivers power and ripeness that you feel on the finish. Give this wine a year or two to find even footing. About 25% of the blend comes from the Sarmassa vineyard with 75% from the Preda cru. Drink date: 2021-2035. GIOVANNI ROSSO CERRETTA BAROLO 2015DOCG

TASTING NOTE: This nice and distinctive family-run cellar project is characterized by an assiduous attention to identity. This Serralung cru consists in parsimoniously used French oak, so that the rebel spirit does not vanish in the very thick grapes blend. Its complex nose reveals rose and violet petals, liquorice root and medicinal herbs’ notes. Its vigorous and inviting drinking can do nothing but envelope you entirely. MICHELE CHIARLO CEREQUIO BAROLO 2015DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The fruit in the 2015 Barolo Cerequio is darker than in the Cannubi, and there is more spice, cured tobacco and dried blackberry. You’ll find a lot more muscle and power here, too: This is a good Barolo for braised beef. There is great structure and a heavier flavor footprint on the palate, along with more grit in the mouth and a tannic bite. This wine was not produced in the difficult 2014 vintage. QUINTARELLI ALZERO 2011IGT Veneto

This primarily old-vine wine has been produced since 1983 and is crafted through the use of the appassimento technique. Depending upon the nuances of the vintage, the wine may be aged for as many as nine years, in large oak casks, before release. Characteristically filled with dark fruit, spice, tar and tobacco notes, this is a wine that will cellar for three decades or more.

CASTELLO DI VOLPAIA IL PURO GRAN SELEZIONE CHIANTI CLASSICO 2015DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Casanova Il Puro shows a dense and rich quality of fruit that is indicative of this sunny and warm vintage. It is the best wine I’ve tasted in this series of samples from Castello di Volpaia. The wine’s texture is thick and plush, and there’s plenty of dark plummy fruit to maintain momentum. Oak spice, tar and campfire ash appear on the long and enriched finish. Pair it with a braised shank of lamb. This is a pure expression of Sangiovese and only 2,000 bottles were made. QUINTARELLI RECIOTO DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2007DOC

TASTING NOTE: This wine is dedicated to Roberto Ferrarini, the longtime consulting enologist who worked with Giuseppe Quintarelli and the Quintarelli family until his death in 2014. The beautiful 2007 Recioto della Valpolicella Classico A Roberto (packaged in a 375 milliliter bottle) is a stunning and magical creation. The last vintage this estate made a Recioto was in 2004, and at the time of this tasting, there was no future vintage earmarked to follow this bottling. Those of you lucky enough to taste this bottle will be rewarded with carefully crafted aromas of plum and raisin with sweet baking spice, moist earth, campfire ash, fresh espresso and a touch of bitter chocolate. This wine was bottled in 2017 and therefore saw ten years of aging in a normal-sized barrique. The wine shows utter silkiness in terms of texture and is surprisingly light on its feet despite its 15.5% alcohol. This is a precious collectors’ bottle. Drink date: 2020-2050. SPERI VIGNETO MONTE SANT’URBANO AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2006DOC

TASTING NOTE: Deep ruby. Some earthy reduction on the nose clear with aeration to reveal blackberry and herbal notes. Juicy and stylish Amarone if less rich and dense than the 2007, with red fruit and underbrush flavors lingering nicely on the smooth finish. The grapes were air-dried for roughly three months. TASTING NOTE: 83% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc, 5% merlot, matured in French hogsheads (42% new) for 18 months before blending. Cabernet from the Eden Valley has its own cool personality – and absolute authority. It is blackcurrant rather than cassis, with tannins that are firm but not dry, and an elusive touch of mint. The franc and merlot have helped the cabernet show a bit of love, the French oak likewise. All up, a wine of class and length. Drink by: 2038. TASTING NOTE: A blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Viognier made just prior to bottling, the 2016 RunRig is a complete masterpiece. It kicks off with elegant notes of pencil shavings accenting blueberries and blackberries on the nose, then shows incredible, palate-staining intensity of fruit in the mouth. It’s full-bodied, plush and velvety without being unstructured and manages to be fruit-forward yet savory on the long-lasting finish, where it picks up hints of mocha and black olives. This should be drinkable with pleasure throughout its entire two-decade life (it may live longer from cold cellars or in larger formats), but if I were lucky enough to have a bottle or two, I’d try the first one about 10 years out. DOMINUS 2016Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot and 8% Cabernet Franc aged in 40% new oak, the 2016 Proprietary Red Wine is deep purple-black in color and quite reticent at this youthful stage to begin, offering up subtle notions of potpourri, Indian spices, cigar box and iron ore over a core of crushed blackberries and black cherries with intermittent wafts of black and red currants, new leather and smoked meats. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a densely packed mid-palate and oodles of freshness framed by very ripe, finely grained tannins and laced with compelling earthy accents. It offers incredible vibrancy with tons of black and red fruit sparkle in the mid-palate leading to a provocative mineral element on the very long finish. If I could give more than 100 for this one, I would. To be released in May 2019. Drink date: 2024-2054. Score: 100 (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, robertparker.com, Oct. 29, 2018)

GALLICA CABERNET FRANC 2015Oakville, Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Cabernet Franc from Gallica is a deep garnet-purple color with a nose of crushed red currants, mulberries and cherries with touches of pencil shavings, lavender, earth and bouquet garni. Full, firm and grainy with youthful, crunchy fruit and great depth, it finishes with lively lift. Drink date: 2017-2035. Score: 95 (Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW, robertparker.com, Oct. 31, 2017)

TASTING NOTE: Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is blended of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Cabernet Franc. It sings of blackcurrant cordial, blueberry pie and warm plums with touches of licorice, violets, cigar box and allspice. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with energetic fruit plus a firm, velvety frame and oodles of freshness, finishing on a lingering mineral note. Drink date: 2019-2040. RAYMOND GENERATIONS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2016Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: One of the true superstars in the portfolio is the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon District Collection Generations, which is even better than the 2015. Brought up in just over half new barrels, it has an incredible bouquet of crème de cassis and blackberry fruits intermixed with lots of spice, fruitcake, and earthy minerality. Possessing full-bodied richness, a sensational sense of opulence with no weight, ripe tannins, and a great, great finish, hats off to winemaker Stephanie Putnam for another brilliant Cabernet Sauvignon that can be drunk today with incredible pleasure or cellared for 20-25 years. TASTING NOTE: Containing splashes of Merlot and Petit Verdot and aged for 27 months in 100% new 225-liter Taransaud French oak barrels, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is very deep garnet-black in color and opens with slightly closed notes of warm cassis, mincemeat pie, Black Forest cake and mulberries with touches of sandalwood, dark chocolate and fragrant earth. Full, rich and spicy in the mouth, it has a firm backbone of chewy tannins and a lively line lifting the long, decadent finish. 600 cases produced. Drink date: 2019-2036. SHAFER TD-9 2017Napa Valley

TASTING NOTE: Moving to the reds, the 2017 TD-9 Proprietary Red Blend is mostly Merlot yet includes 22% Malbec and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep purple-hued with sweet aromas of jammy blackberries, spiced cherries, herbes de Provence, and dried flowers, it is a wonderfully textured, medium to full-bodied, balanced red with sweet tannins and a great finish. It’s going to evolve nicely for 10-12 years. Maturity: 2020-2032. Score: 92 (Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, Jan. 31, 2020)

TASTING NOTE: The 2015 Chardonnay Bearwallow Vineyard is the most expressive of the vineyard designate Chardonnays today, offering up a pretty nose of crisp green orchard fruit, white flowers, subtle nutmeg and lemon curd. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, bright and intense, with an elegantly textural attack, good concentration and a long, mouthwatering finish. It’s not quite as searingly stony as the Horseshoe or Alpine bottlings, but that only lends it additional youthful charm. Drink date: 2018-2028.
