Battle at the Harrics is one of thebiggest events bringing togetherhundreds of riders worldwide. Atable, two lines, two riders andfingerboard tricks are the"ingredients" for this wonderfulrecipe. The first edition took place ontwentieth of March 2010. Dimitriled the first event, the secondwas led by Diego Strozyk andfinally in the most recent editionit was Elias Assmuth.Edition number 4 will take placeon the twenty-third of March inBerlin. This edition will presentsome Portuguese riders, as it wasdone last year, but this timePedro Tavares will be there too.

André Coral, André Miranda,Guilherme Braz and GonçaloRodrigues are some of the namesthat will also be at this greatevent. It's good to see Portugueseriders representing our country. We are a small country in aquantitative aspect but we are acountry with a huge quality. Sowe hope "our boys behave well"out there and have fun becausethis only happens once a year!On the following pages you canrecall some photos of previouseditions and also the winners ofeach.Text: Nelson SousaTranslation: Vasco Trabulo

This is a new section in the magazine.Horoscope Fingerboard was an idea tohave more contact with the public andalso to make the staff have some fun.Perhaps this "joking" horoscope is areality for many and it might evenhelp. How is this going to work?Basically each sign has a little tipabout what the rider needs to domore. It's just like regular horoscope, but it’s about fingerboard. I hope thepeople do not take this the wrongway, and they understand that this isjust a joke to entertain people. On thenext page there are all the signs andtheir respective advises.

Try new maneuvers and innovate. Keep practicing because sooner or later you will be able to do that trick you wanted to do so much.

Maybe, you need to shoot anything. Your success in the fingerboard needs to be recognized, therefore, film something and get opinions and tips to improve.

Invite friends to do fingerboard with you and free yourself from the monotony. Doing fingerboard with friends is the best stuff ever, and you can always learn new tricks.

Try to go to events because that’s where the community is all together, and that makes the national scene grow! Get outside and do fingerboard with others!

Get something new, either a deck or trucks, because you need something new. But do not forget that the material in the fingerboard is not everything, it just helps your performance!

Try to do a “montage” video with any fingerboard friends you have. Besides helping both channels, it is very amusing to see "montages" on youtube.

Be more aware of what is happening in the fingerboard world . Nowadays there are many blogs and websites that make the virtual fingerboard never die!

Try to build your own obstacles. Make projects and you will see that the final product will not disappoint you. Then who knows, you could sell them and make some profit with them.

Keep practicing, as you have been practicing. Finger boarding can make us impatient, but what matters is that at the end we can do everything we wanted to do in the start.

Do not wish everyone to subscribe to you and put a like in your videos. Try to conquer the public with your videos, with your style and moves and not through constant spam.

Watch videos on the internet about a lot of people that do fingerboard, they are the source of a good learning. To see who knows more will always help , in any aspect of life.

Get a new obstacle and free yourself from the monotony. There are so many fingerboard obstacles these days , so get something new.

For fingerboard video lovers, this isnothing new. For those unawareGrand Illusion is a series of videosfilmed and edited by TaylorRosembauer , a great rider, who ispart of the Blackriver-Ramps team. The first edition was released in 2010and has nearly 200,000 views. The lastone left the community stunned.Editing, music, tricks, filming, everything is perfect in this video.Taylor’s characteristic style with justtwo fingers stretched do not foolanyone! In fact, I think it's worthlosing 4 minutes of your time to watchthis video. Additionally Taylor alsoadded a video called"Blackrivervillage", which of course isalso very good. It’s really sad that thechannel has been updated few times, but when there are new videos, everyone is stunned! Congratulationsto Taylor Rosembauer, for giving thesewonderful things to the fingerboardworld.!

A new slope has beenreleased by BBR. It's smalland it's characterized by itsrealism.By now, probably everyonealready knows this littlepearl. It consists of 4 woodenbars (steamed beech) withtwo screws which are boltedto a metal frame previouslywelded and painted in black. The branding was done withlaser engraving. With 25cm long, 5.5 cm wideand 5 cm high, it is wellproportioned to be portable. The fact that it has a metalframe gives it a good soliditybecause the wood elementsare particularly thin (5mm).The ramp gives a great joy touse and it's extremely sturdy! This slope is identical to KLWood street bench - anexcellent brand family of BIGConstruction of slopes -which came out before in themarket. This slope is similarto the street banks.Grinding the wood isextremely boring and itcleans the trucks and doesn'tgive them that "polished"look characteristic. The

advantage is that trucksaren’t used up and graphicsaren’t much worn out. Ofcourse this will be more amatter of taste, but in factthere are alternatives thatuse steel instead to face thisproblem ... well, it is not aproblem, but it does notallow the obstacle to beirreplaceable! ...The price is around 25 Euros,it is not cheaper becausewith half of this money youcan get other quite goodobstacles. However this slopehasn´t an absurd price likeothers that cost 35 euros. This obstacle is not easy to doat home , unlike many others! In my opinion this is why thisslope triumphs - it's realism isrelatively affordable! It is also such a photogenicobstacle that it serves well todo a scenery or domaneuvers over it.To sum up:

Good price, a very good look, great strength, great realism, excellent for all slides, verygood action and bad forgrinds (grind-sliding FTW).

In recent months we haveseen an explosion of colorsand patterns on hangers. Ithink the idea came fromBlackriver and well knownriders quickly began to usethis. It is composed by stripsof veneer that can be appliedin trucks, and make themmore personalized. We can buy them in boxesmade by "SallyHansen" ormade by others, with 16strips of different sizes andthe largest is sufficient tocover the entire truck. So, firstly remove the filmfrom above, that only servesto protect it, and thenremove the part of the stickercarefully because the varnish

is quite fragile, stick it ontothe truck, starting from thefront to the back and thatshould be as perfect aspossible. After applying it,remove the excess with an x-act or a pocketknife to avoidtear bits. Push all the rightareas for a more perfectfinish. After this the trucks will beinevitably "thicker" and, because of that, the wheelscan be attached. The varnishis incredibly tough and hard.It will only scratch in cementor other rough surfaces. Therefore, there is the hint ...good customizations!

As everyone knows, the fact that arider or fingerboarder (whatever youwant to call it) has a sponsor orsponsorship of any brand doesn'tmean that he is a great or even aprofessional fingerboarder. There are lots of videos in theinternet, in Youtube, which are thefamous "Sponsor me". What is thisanyway? The funny thing is thatpeople who want and ask forsponsorship, are the people who arenot good at firgerboard.Another type of videos are the"Tryout's." This type of videos is moreacceptable. The brands that arelooking for new people to join in theirteam , open a competition whichpeople have to film and post theirvideos in the internet with the name"Tryout". Some time ago, theYellowood did something similar, butit was only open to american riders.

If you want to get a sponsorship orsponsor there is a very obvious way:Not wanting to be sponsored.People who request sponsorship aregenerally those who do not do goodfingerboard. Summarizing andconcluding, if you want to besponsored don't ask for it. Deserve it.Create an account on youtube, get acamera and make your own videos.Learn new techniques, do new tricksand the most important of all: go tothe meetings / events and dofingerboard with others. Here is a tip on how to be sponsored, but remember that sponsorship is noteverything and it will not make you abetter or worse rider. What matters isto have fun and above all to make newfriends.

How did you meet fingerboard? The fingerboard as an object passedby my life a few years before I metfingerboard as a modality.Somewhere around the 90’s , I hadone of those transparent pencils withhuge wheels. Sometimes I imaginemyself exactly in that moment when Ihad no idea of the importance that amini skate would have in my life.In the first half of the 2000 decade , Istarted to notice the existence of TechDeck. I had a few , but at the timethey were just miniature skatesomewhere in my room. Around 2006, I started to see fingerboards withanother perspective and it was at thispoint that I started to try to do sometricks. In 2007, I met the forum and thenational scene , and since that time , Imet all communities and the differentinternational scenes. The first meeting I went to was at theExpo , in January 12th , 2008.

How did Lowpro appeared? In the second half of 2007, I started toidealize with Gil our own woodendecks, because, at the time, the onlywooden decks available were not easyto get.The birth of Lowpro happened duringthis process. The support of thecommunity was really important. I cansay that it was crucial. As the firstprototype graphics and photos wereposted, the community started toembrace the project and gave apositive feedback about it all.Lowpro was born between Nov. 2007and Feb. 2008.

As the firstprototype graphics andphotos were posted ,thecommunity started to bracethe project and gave apositive feedback about all.Lowpro was born betweenNov. 2007 and Fev. 2008.3. Do you think that Lowprocontributes to thecomunity?Yes. However this would bea question to the comunity itself.Since 5 years ago I am proudof the family that has helpedme to promote sociability inthe fingerboard scene, andgood disposition in Portugal.

Do you think that Lowprocontributes to the comunity?Yes. However this would be aquestion to the community itself. For 5 years I have been proud ofthe family that has helped me topromote sociability in thefingerboard scene, and gooddisposition in Portugal. We countwith 41 events or meetings inPortugal, Italy, Slovenia andGermany ( most of them inPortugal ).Since the beginning I tried to getsponsors that provided thecoming of international riders , tothe meetings here in Portugal, sothat all of those that could’t go tointernational meetings couldmeet all the guys that I met outthere.Every time I can do promotions , Ido it , and for 1 year Lowpro sellsthe cheaper blank deck of the bigbrands market . We have the bestquality / price relationship. For us, the meetings are the mostimportant thing. However ,I thinkthat while we try to providequality , from decks to videos andmeetings we are contributing tothe community in general. We got an amazing relationshipwith almost all the worldwidescenes so we give a great image offingerboard in Portugal – a goodkarma tends to meet!

Page 54: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version

What is the story behindlowpro talents? The “Lowpro Talents” segmentwas created to promote ridersthat use a Lowpro and have acreative potential. If someone that uses and enjoysa Lowpro deck, thinks it haspotential to be a lowpro Talent ,he can send a video [email protected] atany time. If we like what we seewe come into contact with therider.

Do you intend to continue withit?Yes , I have that intention. Some of the talents are alreadyfamily.

Do you think that in Portugal ,there are enough events of themodality ?No, there aren’t enough events .I can say that from now on weare going to have moremeetings ,but there is no longerthe said “event”.The increase in the number ofmeetings is fantastic for all ofus, from the north to the southof the country. There is at least 1 meeting(Lowpro Meeting, GosWeekend, Pateo) every month, which is something totally newin the national scene, this hasnever happened before. Now, we need more localgatherings, more crews .More local action!

What was the biggest national eventfor you?I liked them all. I can say that I havenever been to an event that I didn’tlike. Highlight to the Pro Classics, thePow-Wow, the presence in Slam Bam,the pateos, Monsanto Jam, theLourinhãs Jams and the Fingaspot. However, for me it is unquestionablethat the Pro Sessions were thebiggest and best event in Portugaltoday.

And Why?I remember that the communityneeded an event. Much time hadpassed since the last 8 month and allthe guys were ready and pumped upto have another meeting. The conditions to organize the ProSessions became reality andeventually it happened in the sunnySaturday of November 5th.It was the

event with the largest number ofparticipants until today : 72.The event also counted with thepresence of Timo Kranz and Tim Putz(1st place).

How was your experience at theHarrics? My first Harrics was in 2010. The firstedition was in a bar much smallerthan in the last two editions. I lovedit. At the time it was a totally newexperience, and I had the chance toknow well the scene of Berlin whichis UNIQUE in my opinion.Since then I haven’t failed anyedition. In 2011 LOWPRO co-organized withthe Blackriver, the 3rd edition. It wasan opportunity to show (again)outside the spirit of the Portuguesescene .

Page 60: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version

Who did you like to meet the most?In Harrics or in international events? In general many people. Some are still great friends and veryimportant people in my life. FromManu, to Paolo, to Tim, to Thymus,to Elijah, to Daniele, to Danny, toMike, to Harry and some morehonorable sirs.It has been the best characteristic ofthis 5 years journey - meet manypeople from everywhere that dofingerboard with taste, uncommitted, creatively and withthe same ideals!

What differences do you noticebetween the scene here and outthere?Between the German scene and thenational one?Besides the obvious differences inlanguage and form, I think there arevery few differences. We have an active scene as inGermany, we have events, meetings,we communicate, we share, we haveriders, there are creative people…Therefore, proportionally, there isthe same human potential. The only difference may be the factof having more brands out there, andthat’s why there are more thingshappening in Germany.

What do you have to say about ourcommunity?Hehe, I began to answer in theprevious question.I think we are a top 5 World scene. Ithink we have no notion of it.We have an immense humanpotential and creativity with a highfingerboard level. And I also thinkthat we have no notion of it.There are 3 brands in Portugal thatone way or another bring more orless valid contribution to the scene, your magazine appeared, we havemany riders throughout the wholecountry, that's fantastic. However, nothing happens if there is no pro-activity!I think the national scene has a littlenotion that we are the scene, constantly, continuously. The scene iswhat we made of it literally. There must be less disrespect andmore “good wave”. We have toaccept all the differences of peopleand find ourselves in this middle wehave in common which is thefingerboard. There must be respectand I think the whole community isin the same place, since we haveenormous potential as I mentionedabove.

Page 61: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version
Page 62: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version
Page 63: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version

At the beginning of the forumeverybody respectedeverybody, because they wereall meeting each other andthere weren’t definedcharacters. Now it seems thateveryone's egos are at stake!Let the crap and let’s just liketo fingerboard simply for whatit is, never stop defendingwhat you believe in.A critical fingerboarder is agood fingerboarder, but acritical and activefingerboarder is even better!

Who do you admire the most? There are several people Iadmire in the world of thefingerboard. In one way oranother they became myfriends, so individually they allknow the answer to thisquestion.

If you could choose betweenskate and fingerboard. Whatwould you choose?I would choose skate, obviously. However, sooner or laterfingerboard would born and Iwould have both!

Which tips would you give toanyone who is starting?I would tell him to be humble,

because there are people whoare in this for a long timebefore you started , so eventhey can help you. I would saynot to stop having fun and tocome to events - the mostimportant.16 - What is your opinionabout the fingerboarders oftoday? (the kind that just wantsponsorship, just ask to sub).Well, it's normal for peoplewanting recognition of theirwork, or time investment. Now,we must have some sense ofthings, and if people don’thave a cool level of fingerboardnor interact with hisstakeholders and fromnowhere they want to enter ateam, there's a certain lack ofhumility . But also , I don’t giveit a lot of importance , whenwe were younger we all saidshit. So when I have messagesfrom people I've never heardof asking to join the team, Icarefully explain that there isno place in the team at themoment and it is importantthat they go to events andmake themselves known to thecommunity, which in lowproyou receive an invitation tocome and never the opposite.

Page 64: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version
Page 65: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version
Page 66: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version

When will the new LOWPRO sitearrive?I hope it comes before theFastfingers. The new site lowpro is probably themost time-consuming secondaryproject that I'm having in lowpro. This is purely and simply becausethere is only one worker in LOWPRO- Me.The concept and execution of thesite, has crept in due to the fact thatI have almost no time to work on it ,and I don’t want to put scenes onlineonly to put something. If it’s lowpro ,when I post it online it have to begood, you have to have quality - andhow haste is the enemy ofperfection, this is the story of theLOWPROsite.Since I do everything from designcommunication, customer service, making the boards by hand withprecision, events, business meetings, demand for new productiontechniques, promotional materials, emails, keep the space, etc etc. etc.(all), basically the steps of LOWPROare always forward but they arealways small. Everything happens butat a certain speed. You can be sure the site is going tobe a reality and with it, many newstuff will appear.

How does it feel to be an adult andpractice fingerboard?I feel really well, if there is a thing Ilove in the fingerboard is : at thebeginning we all (those who are notashamed to admit the hobby) havegone through a certain initiation.

This initiation started by tearingdown all our shame of what the restof the people might think.Freeing us, deep down, the socialweight of what others think of us.THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT for eachperson. It is important to get to be alittle freer than we really are.Today, I am proud to have had thisexperience and have it done withfingerboard.Fingerboard is stupidly entertainingand always will be - this is theimmutable fact that regardless of theage of any human being. The true age of a person in thebackground, and his experience isnever the number of times theRoman calendar bows. So whyshould I worry about what othersmight think about an older beardeddude playing with a mini skateboard.Being a free fingerboarder, uncompromising judgments of anysociety, is a real fingerboarder, a realperson who has the ability to acceptany person as he is, with the leastrespect it deserves. This is something that not everyonehas on our community. So yes, I'msaying that not all are fingerboarders"will be" because if we want theworld not to judge and to respectthe fact that we want to play with afingerboard we have to be ready toaccept almost everything on theplanet - You that are reading thisinterview, ask yourself if you areready to do this!

Page 67: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version
Page 68: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version

Finally, what do you think of themagazine? and the blog?I've had the chance to give my opinionpersonally. My opinion abou the magazine andthe blog is that I basically take my hatto the people who show initiative anddo something with this initiativewithin the community of thefingerboard. It's more important to do somethingthan to do nothing and to complainthat the community is dead. It hasalways been thus, ever since the oldversions of the forum. There arealways people who think it's dead, butdeep down, what we need is creativityand ability to create new things. We must be aware that we are in thecommunity, and we are in the forum -really all depends on what is done

because the community is the sum ofeverything we do within it.So I think they have potential and areof great worth.I also think the whole concept of theMag might be better poised to take itsown identity. Sometimes listening tothe community yields. That was how Ibegan to define what would beLOWPRO own. Also consider an interesting fact that Ihave already had the chance to tellyou - there is an element in journalismfingerboard that hardly happensworldwide. It would be good if atugapublication started to do - so,what is journalism (real) fingerboard.Create parts, create content fromscratch on fingerboard, and do notonly write from what

Page 69: Fingerboarding Magazine 05# - English Version

is posted online, it is also important. Therefore, it would be fantastic tohave more independent reportsanalyzing how events, people andanything else in interesting pieces ofjournalism - something that almost allsources of information fingerboard notdo, or at least not based hisphilosophy that creation. Thefingerboard started doing some TVinterviews that went unfinished, butthat's not enough, it would be aninteresting magazine (online or not)that would create an independent andoriginal pieces on everything ha in thefingerboard as the basis andphilosophy thereof. If this could be the Fingerboard Mag,well, I do not know. In the backgroundturns out to be my opinion that the

lack of journalism fingerboard.

Do you want to add something else?Well, thanks for the interview. Thanksto all who support this LOWPRO 5years of existence. When you are a"one man band" , work can sometimesbecome complicated, but it has beenthe support of many people over theyears, from riders, family, customersthat keep alive the flame of LOWPRO.This Flame for me will always be thedevelopment of national andinternational scene keeping the samevalues and reasons ever - thefingerboard is creating, is sociabilityand above all respect for others. This is LOWPRO above all.
