!e Iditarod Trail is divided into a northern route and a southern route. !e northern route is used on even-numbered years, while the southern route is used on odd-numbered years. !is layout was designed to accommodate towns and villages that wanted to participate in the Iditarod sled dog race - a celebration of Alaskan history.
!e total distance for the southern route is 1,161 miles, while the northern route is slightly shorter at 1,151 miles. !e trail is o"cially touted as being “1,049 miles” in honor of Alaska being the 49th state to enter into the Union.
