FINLAYSON RESEARCH DAY - JUNE 2014
Finlayson Research Day was created in 1985 in memory of
Dr. Morrison H. Finlayson, a neuropathologist and Associate
Professor in the Department of Pathology for over 20 years. As
the Director of the McGill Residency Training Program in Pa-
thology, Dr. Finlayson played a very active role in the training
of residents. His concerns for the quality of education and for the
well-being of each individual during the period of his or her
training were deeply appreciated. For these reasons, the Depart-
ment of Pathology holds an annual research day in his honor to
provide a relaxed and congenial forum for the exchange of ideas
between current members of the department who are investigat-
ing a variety of topics in the field of pathology.
Traditionally held at the landmark Faculty Club on McTavish
Street, this year’s event was well attended, with over 50 faculty
and students who enthusiastically took part, despite the pouring
rain. This year’s keynote lecture was given by internationally renowned expert breast pathologist, Dr. Stuart Schnitt from Harvard Medi-
cal School, and was highlighted by research and poster presentations given by McGill trainees in the Residency and Graduate Studies
Programs. A total of six research presentations were divided into experimental and clinical and Chaired by Dr. Edith Zorychta and Dr.
Chantal Bernard, respectively. With 15 posters submitted to this year’s event, the panel of three judges made up of Dr. Qutayba Hamid,
Dr. Indrogit Roy, and headed by Dr. Schnitt, certainly had their work cut out for them.
After careful consideration, prizes were awarded for best presentation in both clinical and experimental research categories, and best
poster. Finlayson Research Day 2014 was capped off by cocktails and dinner in the main dining room where the awards were presented
to each of the winners. A big thank you goes out to Dr. Edith Zorychta and Dr. Chantal Bernard for organizing the event, and to Isabel
Bolivar, Eileen Grenier and Joan O’Malley for their help with the arrangements and photography.

Molecular Classification of Breast Cancer:
Where Are We and Where Are We Going?
Dr. Stuart Schnitt is the Dir ector of the Division of Anatomic Pathology at
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, co-leader of the Dana Farber Harvard
Cancer Center Breast Program, a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical
School and an internationally recognized expert in breast pathology. He did his
internship and residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Beth Israel Hos-
pital in Boston followed by a fellowship in surgical pathology, also at Beth Israel
Hospital.
Dr. Schnitt has published over 280 original articles, review articles, editorials,
commentaries, and book chapters, primarily in the area of breast diseases. Along
with Dr. Laura Collins he has authored a popular breast pathology textbook enti-
tled "Biopsy Interpretation of the Breast," now in its second edition; this book has
also been published in Chinese. His research interests have focused primarily on
risk factors for local recurrence in patients with invasive breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ treated with breast conserving thera-
py, benign breast disease and breast cancer risk, and stromal-epithelial interactions in breast tumor progression.

EXPLORING COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The Department of Pathology recently hosted five delegates from
Beijing’s Capital Medical University to discuss the potential for cre-
ating a mutually beneficial and sustainable collaborative
relationship. The Chair and Dr. Miguel Burnier, Vice Director of the
MUHC Research Institute, opened the discussion with an overview
of the new MUHC and facilities at the Glen site. Dr. Burnier
communicated our strengths in patient-centric research and emphasis
on personalized medicine, in addition to areas of basic science re-
search in cancer, neuroscience and genetics. One of the advantages
of research collaborations with China is the prospect of attaining a
larger sample size to better understand the underlying mechanisms of
certain disease processes. One area of particular interest to Dr.
Howard Bergman, Chair of the Department of Family Medicine,
McGill University, is Population Health and community-based medi-
cine. He also stressed the importance of primary medical care and
elaborated on China’s recent initiative to train 300,000 general prac-
titioners by the year 2020. In addition to the valuable knowledge
gains that are derived from such partnerships, the benefits of collabo-
ration with McGill University are manifold, including eligibility for
clinical/research fellowships and Royal College certifications. Both
parties were pleased with the outcomes of this discussion and we
anticipate a proposal to be put forth in the Fall.
Farewell Dr. Nahal!
Dr. Ayoub Nahal resigned from the Department of Pathology on July 1, 2014. Dr. Nahal was re-
cruited to McGill University as an Associate Professor and the MGH as a Staff Pathologist in 2002;
specializing in bone and soft tissue. The MGH hosted a farewell luncheon where Dr. Nahal was
greeted with parting wishes from many of his colleagues and staff. He has recently arrived in Dubai
in the United Arab Emirates where he sent us the following email:
Dear Kevin, Staff and colleagues,
We have arrived to the UAE, safely and well. The two weeks prior to my departure were overwhelm-
ingly busy and did not give me a moment to acknowledge what the department of pathology has
done to wish me a memorable farewell. I would like to thank each and every person who expressed
to me, either by attending the farewell hospital luncheon, or by emails, or phone messages, their
warmest wishes for success and happiness, their true feelings of appreciation and camaraderie, and their sadness to lose a colleague. I
will treasure every comment, and every thought written in the note book and the cards. Also, the staff dinner was terrific, and the gifts
very personal, fun, and thoughtful (thank you Kevin). Good luck to all, and see you soon.

Dr. Bruce Case, clinician scientist and leading researcher on asbestos exposure and lung cancer, was recently
invited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association to participate in a panel discussion on Asbestos and So-
ciety: Perception of an Acceptable Risk Level on June 5, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas.
More recently, by invitation of the American Standards and Testing Materials (ASTM), Dr. Case was asked to
present on aspects of the pathology of malignant mesothelioma in the United Kingdom and its implications for
the regulatory community in the USA, at the ASTM Johnson Conference on Asbestos, A lmost Asbestos, and
Asbestos Progeny, which took place from July 21-25, 2014.
He has also been invited to give a talk in the first plenary session on the parallels between asbestos deposits
(mineral) and those in the human body (by electron microscopy), hosted by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) from
Sept. 1 - 5 of 2014; in Johannesburg, South Africa. Dr. Case will also present a lecture on the history of mesothelioma research at the
International Mesothelioma Association Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, October 21-24 2014. His talk will tie in with the 50th an-
niversary of the discovery of the linkage between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure by his late South African colleague Dr. Chris
Wagner. Finally, the Society for Risk Analysis has asked Dr. Case to take part in a panel discussion on asbestos risk, December 7-10,
2014 in Denver ,CO. His topic will highlight the integration of pathology techniques (particularly molecular) into asbestos risk analysis.

Dr. Qutayba Hamid, internationally recognized scientist in the field of respiratory disease, was
awarded the 2014 Distinguished Scientist Award by the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation (CSCI).
The CSCI’s mission focuses on the development of clinician scientists in Canada, and this award is custom-
arily bestowed upon a Canadian clinician scientist who has made significant contributions to new knowledge
and is generally recognized in his/her field as an expert who is innovative, and at the forefront of his/her
research endeavours. Recipients of this award are asked to give a talk on the key elements of their research
as part of the CSCI Young Investigators Forum during the CSCI Annual Conference; to be held this year in
Toronto on November 26, 2014.
Ron Onerheim awarded the inaugural Dr. David S. Kahn Award
for clinical teaching at St. Mary’s hospital for 2014.
This bi-annual award, given by the Director of Professional Services and the
Council of Physicians, Dentists and Pharmacists, recognizes contributions to
clinical teaching at St. Mary's. It is named after the long-serving director of
pathology and Emeritus Professor of Pathology at McGill, Dr. David S.
Kahn. Dr. Kahn came to St. Mary’s and McGill in 1955 and his contribu-
tions to teaching in both hospital and university settings were legendary,
including bringing small-group teaching to McGill in the early sixties. For
his outstanding contributions, Dr. Kahn was awarded the rank of Emeritus
Professor of Pathology in 1991.
It was a great honour for the Division of Pathology at St. Mary’s to have this
new award named after this illustrious alumnus, and a great honour for the first recipient to be a member of the same division.
Dr. Onerheim has been recognized for his teaching throughout his career, including receiving the Osler Award in 1994 and being named
to the Faculty Honour List in 2002.

Congratulations to Dr. Haegert on being awarded a research grant as Principal Investigator from the
Progressive MS Alliance/National MS Society for $74,738.83 Euros; approximately $109,000
CDN for the study entitled, "T-cell activation molecules and progressive MS".
He has also been appointed to the editorial boards of the Journal of Multiple Sclerosis: Open Ac-

Event – Guest Speaker
Dr. Longwen Chen, MD PhD, Assistant Professor of Laboratory Medi-
cine & Pathology and Director of Cytopathology at the Mayo Clinic in Scotts-
dale, Arizona was recently invited to present a lecture and slide seminar to our
residents and pathologists. His lecture highlighted the cytology diagnosis of
pancreatic cystic lesions using endoscopic ultrasound guided fine needle aspi-
ration or FNA, while his slide seminar focused on ovarian tumours.

Dr. Charlie Hao, neuropathologist and recently appointed Associate Professor in the department of Pa-
thology, is pleased to announce the recent publication of his article in Nature Communications entitled:

Exams!
Congratulations to our recent graduates
Amir Salehi, Nhung Ton Nu, Zoreh Esla-
mi, and Bin Xu for successfully passing
their Royal College of Physicians and Sur-
geons of Canada exams. Bin will pursue a
one-year Fellowship in Oncologic Surgical Pathology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Cen-
ter in New York, before returning to McGill as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Patholo-
gy. Amir will pursue a one-year Fellowship in Gynecologic Pathology at the University of Western
Ontario, and both Zoreh and Nhung are going to pursue Fellowships in Gynecologic Pathology at the
University of Toronto. Good Luck and keep in touch!

The Department of Pathology would like to welcome two new resi-
dents (PGY1) into the Residency Program this year:
Pylyp Zolotarov, MD
Pylyp completed his medical studies at the National Medical Universi-
ty of O.O. Bogomolets, Ukraine, where he also did a specialization
certificate in pathology. He went on to pursue research on the molecu-
lar mechanisms of differentiated thyroid cancer metastasis at the
Ukrainian Scientific Practical Centre of Endocrine Surgery, before completing a doctorate of Medi-
cine at the University of Sher-
brooke.
