NSU BROWARD INNOVATION CENTER
In 2018, in an effort to expand Broward County’s
flourishing start-up and technology sector, NSU
unveiled plans for the NSU Broward Innovation Center,
a 60,000-square-foot incubator and accelerator
project on the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. The
NSU Broward Innovation Center will include space to
operate as an incubation and accelerator area to
develop high-tech prototypes and software. It will also
feature a pitch room, space for corporate events and
conferences, mentoring services, and collaboration.
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners approved its part of the $20-million budget
in June 2019, and NSU will be working to secure the remainder of the funds.
Dear Friends,
Sharks are agile, dominant creatures who traverse through the water at great speeds.
Through our collective efforts, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is adapting new
opportunities, graduating leaders prepared to take on the world, and moving at an
unparalleled pace. In other words, this means living up to the image of our mascot to give
our students, faculty members, and community an edge. We truly appreciate every gift,
commitment, and challenge that helps the university reach its vision for the year 2020—to
be recognized by accrediting agencies, the academic community, and the general public
as a premier, private, not-for-profit university of quality and distinction.
Striving for this goal is a nonstop venture at NSU, but we do want to take time to reflect
on and appreciate our accomplishments this year—from finishing the new NSU Tampa Bay
Regional Campus facility to celebrating our scholarship fund donors at our Big Thank You
event. In addition, we want to share our excitement for an upcoming development.
The NSU Broward Innovation Center is officially on the horizon for NSU and Broward
County! Housed in the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology
Center, the new center will feature space for innovation, collaboration, and showcasing
partner products. With plans to host events and create a membership community, the In-
novation Center is designed to become a tremendous economic resource for all of
South Florida.
Thank you for joining the university leadership, board of directors, faculty and staff,
student body, and South Florida community in sharpening the NSU edge.
We look forward to sharing even more success stories with you soon.

by reaching out to the community with diverse service and clinical programs,
community-based research, and resources.
CONTINUING Our Success
FACULTYEXCELLENCEConducted by the Guy
Harvey Research Institute
at NSU, the Eastern
Tropical Pacific Seascape
Research Program is
focused on studying
the ecology and
movement patterns of
major game fishes and
sharks using state-of-the-
art satellite and acoustic tracking in the waters of
the Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape. The goal is
to generate scientific information to guide best
management and conservation practices for these
species, their fisheries, and their ecosystems.
Generous donations from William J. and Susan N. Gallo, Jerry W. DuBois, and Brian P. Herbert of Gallo Herbert Architects and JWR Construction Services are being used to establish a scholarship
fund for NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences
and Oceanography graduate students conducting
this research in Panama.
Additional support is being provided by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Tropic Star Lodge,
as well as individual donors who are passionate
about protecting this unique ecosystem.
The College of Dental
Medicine received funds
from an anonymous
donor to enhance faculty
development. The newly
created endowed
fund will help recruit
outstanding dental faculty members by
supporting programs to advance our
faculty and service to the profession.
The Robert E. Dooley Fund of the
Community Foundation of Broward made
a generous gift to establish the Bob
Dooley and Jan Sheppard Endowed
Prostate Cancer Research Fund. This
endowment will help NSU’s Dr. Kiran
C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine
advance its research on the prevention
and treatment of prostate cancer.
The Shepard Broad College of Law
received a generous gift for faculty
development from the estate of David Shapiro, one of the pioneers who helped
NSU in its early years to acquire land along
the southern border of Fort Lauderdale.

SCHOLARSHIPGIFTSLUCY BOYADZHYAN MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Donor David Schneid, managing partner of Robertson, Anschutz and Schneid,
established this scholarship fund for NSU’s Shepard Broad College of Law
students who have a demonstrated interest in women’s issues, the
advancement of women in the legal profession, protecting women from sexism
or bias, or another connection to the fight for women’s legal issues.
The fund honors Lucy Boyadzhyan, who was a creditor rights attorney at
Robertson, Anschutz and Schneid before she passed away from cancer at the
age of 31. What a beautiful way to honor her life and leave a legacy.
NSU students with an entrepreneurial mindset can apply to
participate in the Razor’s Edge Shark Cage Scholars Program.
During their junior year, students who receive scholarships through
this program are required to open a business designed to engage all
members of the NSU community. This year, three juniors—all
majoring in business and minoring in entrepreneurship and
property management—rose to the challenge.
Paul Wiecki offered premium hot tea and cool, refreshing iced tea at
his Shark TEAth start-up. Stacey Warm had looked for an on-campus, post-workout refueling
solution since her freshman year. Mako Me Fit was her answer to that need. Simple Servings brought national brand foods such as Chick-fil-A, Bento, Mission BBQ, and Buca di Beppo to the
NSU Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus. Teddy Uy owned and operated this venture.
Go Sharks! NSU student-athletes found success on
and off the field this year. Sixty NSU student-
athletes made the Conference Honor Roll, and both
the men’s and women’s basketball teams reached
the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II tournament—
a first for the university!
These achievements were made possible in part due
to support from NSU’s Annual Scholarship Golf Classic. Since its inception 34 years ago, the event
has raised more than
$6.4 million in
endowment funds
to benefit
student-athlete
scholarships.
Thank you to all
who participated!
INSPIRED INNOVATION Thanks in large part to a generous
gift from Stratton and Meritxell Murphy, NSU University School was
able to purchase materials to enable
students from the Lower and Middle
Schools to build award-winning
robots, compete in local and
state-wide robotics competitions, and
qualify for the world championships.
Over the summer, NSU University
School teachers attended
professional development workshops
in innovation and robotics to learn
new skills to put into action as soon
as the new semester begins.

CROWDFUNDINGSuicide prevention, medical outreach,
student development, marine life
education, and autism support are
just a few of the programs featured
at NSU. This year, NSU employed a
new outlet that capitalizes on social
media and everyone’s individual
networks to seek funding for
altruistic ventures and research
opportunities—GiveCampus.com.
Students, faculty members, and
organizations can post a project
description, dollar amount needed,
and time line. Site visitors are then
able to choose which activities align
with their interests and donate online.
More than $35,000 was raised using
this tool alone. Learn more and view
current (and archived) campaigns at
GiveCampus.com. Enter “Nova
Southeastern University” in the
search box.
