From the Rector

Dear Friends

To my mind, one of the saddest sights in the world is a redundant church building. Church buildings are visible pointers to God’s presence in the world, in that sense sharing something of a sacramental quality. Generations of worshippers have loved and prayed in such places, in the belief that they would always remain for generations to come. In such a beautiful place as North Dorset, I am sure that such a sight of a redundant church building would have added impact, where it might be obscured in the confines of an urban landscape.

There are those who say that we have too many church buildings for

the number of worshippers. This is a theological statement about the fact that the Church is not a building, but a gathered worshipping community, which is quite true. But on a practical level, the point is often made because of falling attendances, to which the Church of England is no stranger and in which we are not alone.

Faced with this reality, I think the choice before us is a simple, but

stark one. Either the Church refuses to respond to the world around it (we carry on as we are, oblivious to the fact that the world has moved on incredibly), or we grasp the - painful - nettle of change and reinterpret the Church for modern - if not post-modern – times. For me, being a priest is not about standing by and watching the Church decline, it is about helping it to rediscover its raison d’etre as the people of God. To be blunt: otherwise there really is no point in having churches at all, because the Church will have lost sight of its role in the missio-Dei, the work of God in the world.

As is increasingly clear to me, this is not the easy path. Change is hard,

difficult and painful. But in order to secure the future of our churches we

can’t carry on merely meeting our own needs and ignoring the imperative

of mission. All of us – including vicars! - have to be prepared to make

Closing Date and Time for Copy I would be very pleased if in future I could

receive your copy by 5.00 pm on the 20th of each month. This will make life a great deal easier.

Thank you Jane Tapping Editor

sacrifices to some extent. We must, simply must seek to include those on the fringes of the Church, those described as the ‘unchurched’, and build up their faith and discipleship. Among other things this means that we must offer worship in a more modern idiom, without losing its depth and wonder. It means, too, that we need to reach out to younger generations and show them why the Church should be part of their lives, when everything around them (sadly, including the Church sometimes!) is telling them it’s irrelevant. We ignore these things at our peril. And the greatest travesty of all is that if we don’t step up to the plate, there will be little left for the next generation when many existing church members have gone.

Sacrifice is a concept which is central to the Christian faith, both in the

example of Jesus Christ himself and in that of those who follow him. The Church of today must be prepared to make sacrifices for the good of the Church of tomorrow. It is something that Christians have done down the ages.

With every blessing, Fr Darren A’Court

An advert appeared in the student newspaper of the university:

‘Sweet little old lady wishes to correspond with university student – seeks six-footer with brown eyes answering to initials J.A.D.

Signed, his mother.’

The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

Parish Council News The following planning applications have been received and will be

discussed at the next meeting: Planning Applications 2/2013/0853/PLNG Full Planning (Minor). Okeford Fitzpaine Land At N 380710 E 110730, Back Lane, Okeford Fitzpaine, Dorset. Erect 1 No. dwelling and detached double garage. Modify existing vehicular access. 2/2013/0835/PLNG - Brooks Cottage, Belchalwell Street, Belchalwell, Blandford Forum, Dorset, DT11 0EG – Install 3 x replacement windows expose original fireplace and carry out associated works. Dorset Community Speed Watch

The Parish Council are looking for volunteers for the following a Community Speed Watch initiative. At least 6 volunteers are required and vounteers will work in teams of 3.

The initiative, which allows members of the public to monitor motorists’ driving behaviour in their area and pass on details to the police, has been successfully piloted in West Dorset.

Volunteers are trained in the use of a camera device and are able to record the registration numbers of speeding vehicles, before passing this information to the police.

Dorset Police work with local people, at their request, so that they are able to monitor speeds and driving behaviour in their areas and tell us about their findings.

The Police will then take action, including –if such behaviour is persistent – enforcement activity, which may lead to prosecution.

Scheme volunteers do not act in a covert manner and, in fact, wear high visibility clothing while participating.

If you are interested in volunteering for this initiative please contact Cllr Mike Wood on 01258 860146. Parish Council Meetings Parish Council Meetings take place at 7.30 pm at the Pavillion. All residents are welcome to attend. Sandra Deary, Parish Clerk, Telephone No: 01258 459863, Email: [email protected]

Okeford Fitzpaine CE VA Primary School

Dear All,

Everyone at Okeford Primary wishes you all a very happy new year (school year of course).

We have welcomed our 8 new reception children. They are all full time and have settled so well into their new routine. When we see them every day sat so nicely in Collective Worship we have to remind ourselves how young they are!

The school building is looking good after some building work during the summer holidays. A number of single glazed windows have been replaced with double glazing. We have two new sliding doors between classrooms and the hall has been decorated. We are very grateful to The Salisbury Diocese for funding this project.

The Pre-School has opened this September under new management and the building has received a facelift. Look at the new sign at the front of school! As a school we continue to work closely with staff and children so that the transition from Pre-School to School is a smooth and happy process.

During Spring 2014 we are looking forward to celebrating 200 years of Education at Okeford. This will be an exciting time for the school and the village. If you have any information or photographs linked to school please let us know.

The children were delighted to be able to join the congregation of St Andrew’s and take part in the harvest service on Sunday 22nd September.

This term we will be supporting Jeans for Genes and Breast Cancer charities in our fundraising events.

Admission to School Applications are now open for children who will be starting school in

September 2014. If you have a child who will be starting school please

We were wondering if anybody has any unwanted gifts or new items

that would be suitable donations for a tombola and raffle at our event. Details are yet to be finalised but our event usually takes the form of a

coffee morning or afternoon tea and will be advertised in due course. For further information or to make a donation please contact Ruth

Ruth, Lee and George.

contact school on 01258 860530 so that you can come and look around. We have space for 15 children. You may apply until Wednesday 15th January 2014.

Clubs

This term we are pleased to offer a variety of lunch-time and after school clubs. We have Arts/Crafts, Indoor Bowling, Sporty Kids, Football, Drawing, ZumbAtomic, Lego/Construction, Gymnastics and Netball. We could not offer many of these clubs without our dedicated staff giving up their own time.

Yours sincerely

Message in a Bottle, it could help to save your life

What is Message in a Bottle?

The Lions Message in a Bottle is a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal and medical details in a common place where they can be easily found in an emergency.

How does it work?

The information is kept in a bottle. The bottle is kept in the fridge, where the emergency service will expect to find it in the event of being called to your home. They will know you have a bottle by two labels. One is fixed on the inside of the front door or the main entrance to your home and the other to the door of your fridge.

What is the cost?

It’s FREE! All the costs are paid for by the local Lions who have received generous donations from the public and businesses.

Where can I get a bottle?

Health Centres, Doctor’s Surgeries, Chemists, who should have supplies.

If you have difficulty, please contact your local Lions Club at

0845 8337423. e mail [email protected] Website www.bvlions.yolasite.com

Message in a Bottle Scheme is supported by the following services: Ambulance Police Fire & Rescue Emergency Doctors NHS Primary Care Trusts.

This is published by agreement with the local Lions Club.

Getting ready for autumn

Friendly advice from Dorset Fire and Rescue Ser-

vice

The seasons move on and after a great summer, autumn is coming. This is the perfect opportunity for us to remind you about the dangers you can face in your home as the weather turns colder.

A working smoke alarm is one of the most important things you can own. It

will provide you with an early warning to a fire, giving you time to escape. If you own one, your half way there – just make sure you test it once a week and replace the batteries when necessary.

We usually see an increase in chimney fires over the autumn period. Chimney

fires are preventable if the right precautions are taken. Having your chimney swept is vital. The function of sweeping the flue/chimney is to remove the de-posits that build up. By sweeping the flue/chimney it ensures that there is a clear and safe passage for the safe exit of combustion products, which are caused by the burning process. This lessens the chances of the chimney catching fire.

If you are putting the fire or the woodburner on, please consider a guard and

how far away combustible materials are, like clothes. Don’t forget to make sure all the embers are under control and put out properly when you go to bed!

As the evenings draw in, candles are also great to create an atmosphere and

add some extra light – just don’t leave them unattended! Make sure you put them out before you go to bed and you use an appropriate base for them, like a plate.

Cooking has been the cause of over 50% of accidental fires in the home that

we have attended over the last year (2012/13). When cooking, don’t be distracted and please don’t leave anything unattended. If you have to leave the kitchen, think about turning off the hob or using a timer – that way cooking won’t be for-gotten about!

Finally, have you received a home safety check from Dorset Fire and Rescue

Service? We provide them free of charge and we will give you bespoke home safety advice designed around you and your home such as escape routes, cook-ing, electrics and much, much more. An hour of your time could save your life and if it’s appropriate our staff will fit free smoke alarms too. To sign up call 01305 252600 or check our website www.dorsetfire.gov.uk

Seasonal Soups and Stews The nights are drawing in, so time to get the stew pots and casseroles out of the back of the cupboard. We are lucky in the UK that we have such a variety of seasonal food so lets relish some lovely autumnal dishes.

Mushroom Soup ½ lb mushrooms ( also use stalks), 1 pt water or stock, 1

oz flour, 2 oz butter or marg, salt, pepper, little cream or top of milk.

Wipe and chop mushrooms, Heat butter in pan, fry mushrooms for about 5 mins, take care not to let them dry out or discolour. Stir in flour and cook for about 5 mins. Gradually add cold stock or water. Bring to boil, reduce heat a little, stir until slightly thickened adding good pinch salt and pepper. Reduce heat simmer gently for 10 mins. Stir in cream at last minute.

Cream of Tomato Soup Good if you have a surplus of tomatoes.

1 oz butter, 1 stick celery, 1 carrot, 1 small onion, all washed, skinned & chopped, 1 rasher bacon rinded & chopped, 2 level tbsn flour, 1½ lb tomatoes skinned & quartered, 1 pt chicken stock, bouquet garni, salt & pepper, ¼ level tspn sugar, 2 tbspn single cream, chopped chervil or basil

Melt butter in large pan, add celery, carrot, onion and bacon and cook for 5 mins. Add flour and cook for 1 min, stirring. Add tomatoes, stock and bouquet garni, cover and simmer gently for about 30 mins. Remove bouquet garni and puree soup in blender then sieve to remove seeds. Return to a clean pan, add seasoning, sugar and cream and reheat without boiling. Garnish with herbs, if no basil or chervil use chopped parsley.

Beef and Ale Hotpot This is one for the slow cooker. This serves 6, so halve the quantity for a smaller slow cooker. Or freeze the surplus.

2tbsp oil, 2lb braising beef, trimmed of fat & cubed, 1 large chopped onion, 3 tbsps plain flour, 500ml(17fl oz) can brown ale or stout, 4 tsp wholegrain mustard, 3 tsp soft brown sugar, 2 tbsp tomato puree, ¾ pt hot beef stock, 14 oz celeriac and 1¼ lb potatoes peeled and thinly sliced, 1 oz butter, salt & pepper, chopped chives

Pre-heat cooker if necessary (see instructions). Heat 1 tab oil in large fry pan, gradually add half beef and fry over high heat stirring, until brown. Remove with slotted spoon and reserve. Add remaining oil, add remaining beef & onion, fry until browned. Stir in flour, add beer,

Page 23: FIPPENNY NEWS - WordPress.com · In the Blackmore Vale Deanery of Salisbury Diocese . ... Mrs Sue le Riche LLM in training (off duty Tues, ... up their faith and discipleship

23

mustard, sugar, tomato puree and plenty of salt and pepper. Bring to boil stirring then transfer to cooker pot with reserved beef. Stir in hot stock. Arrange celeriac slices on top then sliced potatoes. Dot with butter, put on lid and cook for 5-6 hours on high. If the crock pot fits under your grill brown the potatoes before serving. Garnish with chives.

`Peppered Pork Pot. Also a slow cooker recipe.

1 tbsp olive oil, 4 boneless spare rib pork chops, 1 chopped onion, 1 red & 1 orange or yellow pepper, deseeded & sliced, 2 cloves garlic chopped, 2 tbsp plain flour, 1 can (13oz) chopped tomatoes, 200ml chicken stock, few sprigs thyme, salt & pepper.

Pre-heat cooker if necessary. Heat oil in pan, add pork chops and brown on both sides. Remove & transfer to a plate. Add onion to pan and fry, stirring for 5 mins until lightly browned. Stir in the peppers and

garlic and fry for 1 min. Stir in flour, then add tomatoes, stock, thyme and season well. Bring to boil stirring. Put chops in cooker, cover with tomato mixture. Cover with lid and cook on low for 8-10 hours. Serve with mashed potatoes or polenta

Pheasant Salmi It is autumn after all and in Dorset pheasant is readily attainable, try the local butchers if you don’t know a local sportsman.

1 pheasant, ¾ pt brown stock, 4 tbsp red wine, 2 tbsp port or Madeira, 1 tbs red-currant jelly, 4 oz button mushrooms sliced, 2 shallots chopped, bouquet garni. Prepare bird as for roasting but only roast for 15mins. Joint it. Put pieces in a large casserole or stew pan. Add stock to roasting tin and stir well to get all the toasty pieces into the sauce, add shallots, bouqet garni, red-currant jelly, wine and port or Madeira. Season. Pour over the jointed bird, cover simmer for 30 mins. Add mushrooms, cook for a further 15 mins or until bird is tender. Serve with veg of your choice and triangles of bread fried in butter. Also a good way to cook Guinea Fowl.

Autumn on a plate If you do not have a slow cooker just pop the stew into the oven for

about 2½-3 hours on a medium to low heat. Then test to see if tender.

Peter’s notes from the Garden Club visit on 1st September

NOTES ON TAKING AND GROWING PLANT CUTTINGS 1. Prepare cutting compost and collect material from the plant, early in the day if possible. 2. a. Stem cuttings – cut just above a pair of leaves of the mother plant to encourage lateral shoots to form. Trim cutting below a pair of leaves.

b. Heeled cuttings - A side shoot without flowers, about 4 inches long, Break off with heel. Trim heel if over long and ragged. c. Basal cuttings – From the first flush of new growth, cut shoot as low down as possible, sometimes below soil level.

3. Trim off lower leaves to about two pairs of top leaves, to give about 2 inches of bare stem. Insert around the edge of a clay pot (plastic in emergency), about 6 to a 6 inch pot. 4. Water thoroughly and place in a warm place, out of direct beams of the sun. 5. Check regularly, especially in first week. Water as necessary, daily if very hot, to every 3-4 days if cooler. After a month or so check for roots growing through the drainage hole and growth of fresh leaves. 6. Knock out the cuttings and tease them apart. 7. Working quickly, pot each one individually, if possible in compost with extra food pellets added. 8 Put in a sheltered place to grow on and do not allow to dry out. 9. When sufficiently large and sturdy, either transfer to a larger pot, or plant into a final place in the garden. This can take from on to 6 months depending on the time of year. Avoid planting during periods of drought. 10. If cuttings are taken very late in Autumn, once rooted, keep in an insulated space and water sparingly every couple of weeks. Semi hardy plants will survive sub zero weather if protected and place on the floor/soil which will be warmer than a shelf. It's absolutely essential to label cuttings at all stages of growing, no matter how certain you are of knowing which is what or you'll end up with unidentified plants growing away. I know; I am that guilty party. The same goes for seeds collected and put in envelopes. Write on the plant name or description and the date collected. Old plant labels can be easily recycled by using a green scourer to clean off old writing, even if indelible ink. Hope you have a go. It's very rewarding and it's absolutely FREE! Peter

Who are you eating with?

How often do you sit down and eat with your nearest and dearest? Probably only about 10 times a month. Most of the time we flop on the couch in front of the television. In fact, some 45 per cent of our meals are now TV dinners, and most of us spend less than half an hour chatting with each other during and beyond our meal.

40 per cent of us now admit that we no longer have meaningful conversation as a family. Privately, two out of five parents worry that they do not talk enough as a family, and that they can find it hard to bond with their own children. Even when families do sit down and talk to each other, serious and personal subjects are avoided in favour of lighter topics. The survey was carried out by the Museum of London.

The trouble with my family is how to stop them talking! Goes back

generations.

FIPPENNY GARDEN CLUB Our meeting at the start of September had garden club members bathed

in sunshine as we toured the gardens of 3 of our group. Each garden was quite different in character with plenty to see despite the long, hot dry period we’ve experienced. Many thanks to Peter Bowles for providing instruction on taking cuttings and outlining other methods of propagation. Thanks also to Marilyn and the other ladies for doing the teas and baking some fine cakes. Overall, it proved to be a very pleasant, relaxed, social afternoon, enjoyed by all.

Next Meeting: Monday 7th October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall

Dorset from Coast to Countryside A talk by Paul Sturgess

An illustrated talk by photographer, naturalist and local history enthusiast Paul Sturgess that is sure to enthral and delight! October club competition: A House Plant

As well as the talk by Paul we have the last club competition of the year. I am sure we all have a house plant that could be brought to the hall for the evening. Go on, give it a night out and let it enjoy the fun! I’m hoping for a bumper entry for this completion.

Upcoming Events: November 4th – Annual Dinner December 2nd – A talk by Chris Evans about Bournemouth Borough Council at the Chelsea Flower Show.

FRED PHILPOTT, Chairman

The following are genuine notes left for milkmen. You know what they mean, but...?! Dear Milkman: I’ve just had a baby, please leave another one. Cancel one pint after the day after today. Please don’t leave any more milk. All they do is drink it. Please close the gate behind you because the birds keep pecking the tops of the milk. Please cancel the milk. I have nothing coming into the house except two sons on the dole. Please bring me a form about cheap milk, as my boyfriend has made me stagnant. Please do not leave milk at no. 14 as he is dead until further notice.

On the perils of Harvest The Rectory St. James the Least My dear Nephew Darren

In the unlikely event of ever being put in charge of designing the course for those being trained for ordination, I would make a few significant changes. Modules on doctrine, Church history and Greek would all be dropped as unnecessary. In their place, I would add courses on how to run a tight jumble sale, ways to keep your church council in order – and especially close to my heart at present, how to negotiate Harvest.

The first skirmish starts in early Summer when it becomes clear that

the flower arrangers’ plans mean that the choir would disappear behind a huge array of chrysanthemums. The choir then retaliate by announcing that their Harvest anthem must take place just when the Sunday School intended to re-enact the parable of the Good Samaritan. They, in turn, raise the stakes by insisting that a stage will be needed for their performance, thus ensuring that I will be separated from the congregation by an impenetrable barricade.

In September, therefore, there is the traditional meeting to iron out all

these little difficulties. This inevitably results with the annual act of the verger handing in his resignation, of the bell ringers threatening a mass walk-out, and those who organise coffee afterwards demanding that my sermon lasts no more than 3 minutes, so there will be plenty of time for socialising after the Service.

I greet all suggestions with a spontaneous burst of indifference, smile,

agree with it all – and do nothing (this, incidentally, is a good policy for all decision-making). Inevitably, everything goes ahead exactly as it has always done for the last century.

Come the day, there will be the usual arrangement of eggs round the

font, with the strategically placed card saying “Given anonymously by Elsie Jones” and the pyramid of apples temptingly near the choirboys, so designed that when someone tries to pinch one during the sermon, the whole pile disintegrates as they roll all over the chancel.

Okeford United Football Club :- Monthly Draw results.

September 2013 :- £30—[No.112] Alice Goddard £10—[No.53] Chris Ullein £5— [ No.134] Will Jennings Many thanks to all our supporters. Anyone interested in joining our monthly draw (cost £1 per month) - please contact Allan Frampton (860083) or any Football Club member.

On the following Friday, all will leave after the Harvest Supper saying that the entertainment was worse than the previous year and that the absence of red cabbage had quite ruined the hot pot. Everyone therefore has an enjoyable evening

My Harvest training course would be compulsory and a pass mark of

90% would be needed before ordination could be considered. Your loving uncle,

Eustace

Dorset Wildlife Trust North Dorset Group ‘Dragon & Damsel Flies’

With speed bursts of up to 35 mph and the ability to turn 180° in flight,

dragonflies are amongst our most ancient, colourful and fascinating spe-cies. Usually we only catch brief glimpses they flash by, wings beating up to 45 times per second, gone before we can be sure if it was dragon or damselfly. Luckily, Dorset based world wildlife photographer, Brian Pet-tit, has captured some wonderful images of the UK’s dragon and damsel-flies, grasshoppers and bush crickets. He is also the author of Wildlife Photography on a Budget, and his illustrated talk “On a Wing and a Pray-er” provides an insight into the daily hazards they face and the tricks they use to survive.

Brian’s talk starts at 7.30pm, Wednesday 16th October Village Hall,

Fontmell Magna (postcode SP7 0JU). Entry is free to children and just £2

for adults. All proceeds go to Dorset Wildlife Trust.

New Exhibition

‘The Heart that Fed’ Saturday 2 November 2013 - 1st February 2014

Two of Dorset’s most compelling artists, Nell Race and Angelika Seik, pre-

sent an exhibition of paintings and sculpture that showcases two extensive working careers which have lent each of their oeuvres an instinctive, personal signature.

Nell is a prolific and well respected painter. Angelika carves stone sculptures with provocative titles like ‘How many meals have you cooked in your life time?’

Museum director Jon Murden said, “We are delighted to be able to host this exciting new exhibition and believe the contrast between the paintings and the sculptures will create an impressive and fascinating show.” Many of the pieces are for sale and entry is free. For additional information on the artists please see:
