June 21, 2004 marks the “official” start of summer! Each year, millions of people look forward to summer, holiday weekends with friends and family, fireworks, barbecues, campfires and fun in the sun. But, summer funalso brings the potential for burn injuries. It is estimated that 15,000 children are hospitalized with “summer”

burn injuries each year. Below is some important burn safety information to help prevent a burn injury frombecoming one of your summer memories.

FIREWORKS• Fireworks are DANGEROUS.• Fireworks are ILLEGAL in San Diego County.• Sparklers are ILLEGAL and DANGEROUS.• NEVER play with fireworks.• ALWAYS watch licensed fireworks shows.

SUMMER COOKING• ALWAYS keep children away from barbecues

and camp fires.• When near campfires and grills, wear snug-fitting,

tightly woven, or short-sleeved garments.• NEVER use a flammable liquid (especially

gasoline) to start a fire or hot coals.• NEVER leave a fire unattended.• ALWAYS dispose of hot coals in properly marked

receptacles - buried coals retain heat for up to 24 hours and may cause a serious burn injury to an unsuspecting passerby who steps on them.

• ALWAYS keep matches and lighters out of reach from children.

SUN SAFETY• ALWAYS wear a minimum sunscreen of SPF

15 or greater when going outdoors and re-apply every 2-3 hours and after swimming.

• Serious sunburns CAN occur even when it iscloudy or overcast.

• Wear dark sunglasses to protect your eyes anda broad rimmed hat to protect your head and neck.

• Be cautious of metal and plastic playground equipment that is exposed to direct sun. Contactburns can easily occur.

FIRST AID FOR BURNS• Stop, Drop, & Roll to smother clothing fires.• Cool the burn with tap water and Call 9-1-1.• QUICKLY remove any clothing that could hold in heat and cause the skin

to keep burning. DO NOT remove clothing that is sticking to the skin.• Do not apply ice, butter or ointments to a burn injury. • For burns to head, hands and feet, seek medical help immediately. • For large burns, cover the victim with a clean, dry cloth to reduce shock and

to conserve body heat.

Visit www.burninstitute.orgin late June for a list of local fireworks shows in your area of the county.

San Diego is the first region in thecountry to participate in a nationalprogram created by Fireman’s Fund

Insurance Company (FFIC). Thisinitiative, “Fireman’s Fund Heritage SM -San Diego,” is aimed at supportingfirefighters for safer communities.

In 2004, FFIC will award up to $1 million in grants forequipment, fire prevention tools, education programs andtraining in San Diego County. In February, FFIC issued aninvitation to all paid and volunteer fire departments in thecounty to submit grant proposals to assist with funding needs. The first round of grants totaled more than $500,000 and wereawarded on April 6, to 16 fire departments. In the fall, a secondrequest for proposals will be sent out making available up to anadditional $250,000 in funding.

Another major element of Fireman’s Fund Heritage is thecreation of local, public education programs on fire and burnprevention. For this reason, FFIC donated more than $300,000to support Burn Institute fire and burn prevention educationefforts in the community. In addition to supporting fire andburn prevention, FFIC will also serve as the title sponsor ofFirefighter’s Night at The Padres and FIRE EXPO 2004.
