Power over Satan and demons
Mk 3:27 “No one can enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. then he can rob his house.”
Jesus came to earth to destroy the works of Satan (1Jn 3:8), to establish God’s kingdom (see article on THE KINGDOM OF GOD, p. 1294) and to free us from Satan’s power (12:28; Lk 4:18; 13:16; Ac 26:18). One of the main emphases in Mark’s Gospel is Jesus’ overriding aim to defeat Satan and his demonic powers. In 3:27, Jesus illustrates the principle behind this spiritual conflict in terms of “tying up the strong man” (i.e., Satan) and “robbing his house” (i.e., setting free those enslaved to Satan or “possessed” by demonic powers and reclaiming those lives for God’s kingdom). This power over Satan is especially evident in the driving out of demons (Gk daimonion) or evil spirits. “Driving out” or “casting out” means the exercising of Jesus’ authority to force demonic powers to give up control of people whose lives they have enslaved and whose bodies they have inhabited.
SATAN AND DEMONS. Satan (Heb, meaning “accuser” or “adversary”) was originally a great angel created perfect and good. He was appointed to minister (i.e., to serve) directly around God’s throne in heaven. Yet before the world began, he became filled with pride and rebelled against God. As a result, he became God’s primary adversary and an enemy to all humanity (Eze 28:12-15). We must, however, keep in mind that Satan is not equal with God; he is a created being and is completely subordinate to God’s power. Satan is not omnipresent (everywhere at the same time), omnipotent (all-powerful) or omniscient (all-knowing), so most of his activity is delegated to demons (8:28; Rev 16:13-14; see Job 1:12, note). In his rebellion against God, Satan misled a multitude of lesser angels (Rev 12:4, 7) who could likely be identified, after their “fall” from heaven, with demons or evil spirits. Satan and many of these lesser angels were exiled to the earth and the atmosphere around it, and now operate within this sphere of influence as God allows. Their considerable control and influence in the world presents all people with a legitimate choice whether to follow God or to follow evil. DEMONS. (1) As a result of humanity’s sin and rebellion against God, the NT describes the world as estranged (i.e., alienated, separated) from God and seized by Satan, who now exercises a great deal of authority on the earth (see Jn 12:31, note; 2Co 4:4; Eph 6:10-12; see article on THE CHRISTIAN’S RELATIONSHIP TO THE WORLD, p. 1880). (2) Demons are spirit beings who have personality and intelligence. As members of Satan’s kingdom (see Mt 12:26), they are part of a highly organized empire of evil that has authority over “the kingdom of the air” (Eph 2:2). As agents for enacting Satan’s purposes, demons are enemies of God and humans (Mt 12:43-45). Demon spirits are thoroughly evil, malicious and under Satan’s authority (see Mt 4:10, note). In order to overcome the schemes and temptations of Satan and his demonic forces, Christians must wage continual spiritual warfare against them (see Eph 6:12, note). (3) Numerous accounts in the Bible make it clear that it is not uncommon for demons to inhabit the bodies of some people who do not have a personal relationship with God (see Mk 5:15; Lk 4:41; 8:27-28; Ac 16:18). The evil spirits enslave the individuals they “possess,” can use their voices to speak and can influence them toward evil, immorality and destruction. (4) Demons can cause physical ailments and illness in the human body (Mt 9:32-33; 12:22; 17:14-18; Mk 9:20-22; Lk 13:11, 16), although by no means is all sickness and disease the result of evil spirits (Mt 4:24; Lk 5:12-13). (5) Demons are the real power behind the “gods” and “idols” of false religions, which means that worshiping false gods is essentially worshiping demons (see 1Co 10:20, note; see article on THE NATURE OF IDOLATRY, p. 357). (6) Those involved in spiritism (i.e., the attempt to communicate with the dead) and sorcery (i.e., the supposed use of magic) are dealing with evil spirits. Such activity can easily lead to a person coming under demonic bondage and control (cf. Ac 13:8-10; 19:19; Gal 5:20; Rev 9:20). (7) Evil spirits will be especially active in the end times, promoting the occult (i.e., witchcraft and satanism), sexual immorality, violence, cruelty and mass deception. They will attack

The Calling of the First Disciples

4:32 HIS MESSAGE HAD AUTHORITY. The basic meaning of “authority” (Gk exousia) is “the freedom and right to decide or act.” It involves capability and power (cf. v. 36). Jesus had a God-given authority from his Father (Jn 17:2), which came from knowing the Father and recognizing what the Father was doing in the world. Jesus also delegated authority to his followers (Mk 3:15; Lk 9:1). But he did not want them to become arrogant and authoritarian, so he warned them not to be like the rulers and officials of the world who “exercise authority” (Mt 20:25-28) in a way that tyrannizes or dominates others. Jesus used his authority to serve, help, instruct and free people from demonic control (v. 36; see article on POWER OVER SATAN AND DEMONS, p. 1347).4:33 AN EVIL SPIRIT. Luke records that one of Jesus’ first acts after announcing his role as the true Messiah (the one who fulfills the prophecies about the coming Savior) was a direct confrontation with demonic powers.
(1) Jesus’ primary concern in ministry was to destroy the devil’s works (1Jn 3:8). Christ’s followers will not realize or experience the full benefits of God’s kingdom without confronting and prevailing over Satan’s kingdom (see Mt 12:28; see article on THE KINGDOM OF GOD, p. 1294). (2) One unmistakable sign that God’s people are failing to experience and demonstrate God’s kingdom is the failure or inability to confront directly the power of evil by setting people free from the slavery to sin and demonic powers. These powers certainly recognize Christ and his authority and must submit to his followers who truly possess Christ’s power because of their deep and uncompromising relationship with him (see article on POWER OVER SATAN AND DEMONS, p. 1347).4:40 HEALED THEM. Solomon built the temple adjacent to the royal palace. The temple served both as a chapel for King David’s family line and as a national shrine (worship center). God told Solomon, “I have [put] my Name there forever ... I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father” (1Ki 9:3, 5). SERVING FOLLOWS JESUS’ EXAMPLE. How do you measure success? Most people embrace the world’s standard of doing whatever it takes to get ahead. But Jesus’ teaching defied worldly ideals: “The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Mt 23:11-12; see Lk 22:24-30, notes). Jesus demonstrated humility through such acts as washing feet, then saying, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you … Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them” (Jn 13:15, 17). To show people who Jesus is and what he is like, you must actively look for ways to serve and assist others at home, school, work and in every aspect of life. By serving with proper motives, you reflect Christ’s character and compassion (Mt 20:26-28; Php 2:3-7). Your aim should not simply be to expand your ministry. You are to serve others because God’s kingdom is characterized by servanthood. A true servant does not expect thanks and recognition, but finds opportunities to help people who can offer nothing in return (Lk 14:12-14).
SERVING REMOVES BARRIERS AND OPENS DOORS TO SHARE CHRIST’S MESSAGE. Jesus modeled the most powerful form of leadership—servant leadership. His concern was not for position or power. Jesus had influence because he chose to serve. By serving others and showing simple acts of kindness (Col 3:12), you too will gain influence. In addition, you lend credibility to your witness and break down barriers of resistance to Jesus’ life-changing message. Many will not receive the message unless it comes from someone who cares enough to meet their needs (see Isa 58:6-10; 1Jn 3:16-18, notes). You may have to feed people’s stomachs before feeding their souls, or clean up their neighborhood before you can help clean up their lives. You often do more to point people to Christ by how you serve them than by anything you say. To impact your campus for God, your priorities must be his priorities. As you serve others, God will open doors for you to share your faith. Your actions might help overcome the reluctance of a school administrator for you to start a campus club or instigate a student-led ministry event. (For ideas you can implement individually or with other Christians, see the list of WAYS TO SERVE YOUR SCHOOL, p. 2275.) In communicating your faith, actions give credibility to words, and words give clarity to actions.
SERVING DEVELOPS SPIRITUAL MATURITY. Just as you change and mature physically and mentally, you must also grow and mature spiritually. This happens as you shift your focus from what you get out of ministry to what you can give or contribute. Sadly, many in the church are more concerned with their own needs being met than with helping to meet others’ needs (see questionnaire, GIVER OR TAKER, p. 2277.) But the call to follow Jesus is a call to serve, not to be served (Mk 10:45). Life is more interesting, fulfilling and rewarding for those who aim to help and benefit others (see 1Ti 6:18, note). Not only do we mature individually as we serve, but we also help our churches and youth groups grow and develop as we each fulfill our roles (cf. 1Co 14:12; Eph 4:11-15). Ministry is not

The following items provide practical training related to the five commitments—or disciplines—of a campus missionary: PRAY, LIVE, SERVE, TELL, and GIVE. WAYS TO SERVE YOUR SCHOOLThe following are just a few ways you could volunteer individually or as a group
to serve on your campus, demonstrating Christ’s character and compassion. Serving with your Christian club or youth group can lend credibility to your witness, give you influence with others and open doors of opportunity for further ministry and service.
SERVInG AS A GRouP:
• Ask the principal if there are any projects your church, group or club could take on to benefit the school.
• Recruit tutors or mentors from your church and the community.• Sponsor a Teacher Appreciation Day. Provide food in the teachers’ lounge and have your
church or club sign thank-you cards to all the teachers.• Provide snacks and refreshments during teacher orientation at the start of the school year.• Organize a day to pick up trash around the campus or to clean up the stands after a game.• Organize a canned food or “Toys for Tots” drive.• Bake cookies for the school faculty.• Raise money to purchase a piece of furniture for the teachers’ lounge.• Be available to fill support roles at various events and competitions (e.g., track meets,
wrestling tournaments, drama productions, band activities).• Volunteer to staff the concession stand at school events.• Set up a periodic (weekly, monthly, quarterly) breakfast for students if your church is near
the campus.• Host an after-school program for students that offers recreation, tutoring and skill training.• Volunteer to set up for class media presentations, projects, displays, etc.
