James Lake
James D. Lake is the Vice President of Training and Education for the NFSA. In this position, he oversees the development and delivery of all training and education programs produced by NFSA.
He has over 20 years experience in code enforcement, fire sprinkler industry representation and codes and standards administration. He has served as the Staff Liaison to the NFPA Technical Committee on Automatic Sprinklers, responsible for writing NFPA 13, 13D, 13R and NFPA 24 and 291 as well as the Technical Committees for NFPA 25, NFPA 750 and many others. He is also the Chair of the Fire Protection Committee of the American Water Works Association.
Mr. Lake is the editor of the 2010 Editions of the Automatic Sprinkler Handbook, the Automatic Sprinkler Handbook for Residential Occu-pancies, the 2011 Edition of the Water-Based Fire Protection Systems Handbook and the Third Edition of the NFPA Pocket Guide to Sprin-kler System Installation. He has developed and delivered technical presentations and training on fire protection to large and small groups throughout the United States and around the world.
He holds a Bachelors Degree in Fire Prevention Administration and a Masters Degree in Education.

Session DescriptionEvolving Sprinkler Issues NFPA 13, 2013 Edition
During the development process for the next edition of NFPA 13, the Technical Committee on Sprinkler System In-stallation (Responsible for Chapter 8) addressed a number of proposals and comments regarding the placement of sprinklers in relation to ceiling clouds; the issue of areas shadowed from sprinkler spray and concealed spaces. This presentation will provide background for these proposals and comments as well as other continually evolving changes in the upcoming standard.
