Risk Communication & Resilience Research Stream
AT THE NATIONAL CONSORTIUM FOR THE STUDY OF TERRORISM AND RESPONSES TO TERRORISM
STARTs primary goal in training students is toeducate and develop work-place ready professionals. START student researchers and FIRE members participate in a suite of enrichment activities including:
workshops and data analysis methods personal growth sessions hosted by the UMD Center for Leadership and Organizational Change informal language pratice sessions networking lunches and talks with preeminent scholars who visit START
More than half of Americans think they can rely on local authorities to rescue them during disasters, and 75% of respondents to a @RedCross survey expected help to arrive within an hour when they posted a request on a social media site. To help counter these trends, we develop science-based answers for how effective government communication
can help the public best prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. #risk #resilience

Quantifying Disaster Resilience: Interdependent Systems This project considers public policy, organizational policy, emergent organizational behaviors, and risk communication. The research team will map out these usually hard-to-see system dependencies, which will help first responders and government
prepare for cascading crisis effects.
Training in Risk and Crisis Communication (TRACC) TRACC is a social science-based curriculum developed and presented by START and funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The program boasts a unique research-based curriculum that covers the entire life-cycle of a crisis including
preparation, response and recovery.
