Firefly™ Ink Printing InstructionsTo prepare an image for printing with Firefly ink, brightness and hue must be adjusted before the image is inverted. We supply basic Photoshop settings for ease of use. However, we believe that creative software allows the user to experiment and obtain the best individualized results. We also realize not everyone has Photoshop.

Basic Photoshop conversion settings are: Hue 140, Lightness 17 then Invert.

To print the Firefly converted image, open it in a printing application. For glossy paper surfaces, select a glossy media type setting. For non-glossy media, select a matte media type setting. Do NOT select “plain paper”.

Next, select the highest resolution for the best quality and use regular printer color management. Since colors are bright and color matching is not crucial as with regular color inks, standard printer driver color management can be used with high quality settings to produce great output results.

The printed image will be invisible under normal lighting conditions. However, when viewed with a 365nm UV/black light, the image will come alive and glow brightly. For the best results, print on paper WITHOUT optical brighteners. We recommend our Firefly dual sided matte paper.

Small Format Firefly Refill Cartridge Instructions

Always test your printer with Epson cartridges to insure good working condition before installing any third party inks / cartridges. Do this even if your printer is new! Please inspect our cartridges for damage before filling with ink. Be certain that the chips are flat and fitted securely to the carts.

Clean Printer Before Installing Firefly InkFirefly inks are milky white and print invisible in regular lighting. When you install Firefly inks into a printer that has previously been used with other inks, it is important to clean your printer to avoid color staining. Verifying that the printer works well with Epson inks then remove the cartridges from the print head. Next, dip a clean Q-tip into distilled water so that it’s moist but not dripping wet. In a circular motion use the Q-tip to clean ink from and around the points that pierce the bottom of the carts. Use dry Q-tips to absorb any remaining liquid.

Filling ProcedureNOTE: On new cartridges, the fill hole has a colored rubber plug and the air vent hole is covered with yellow tape.

1. Place empty cartridges, ink bottles and syringes on a work surface. Have Windex and paper towels handy in case of a spill. 2. Fill a syringe with approximately 15ml of ink by drawing from the bottle using the blunt needle. Make sure to fill each cartridge with the correct ink. Gently shake ink bottles to ensure pigment is in suspension before filling or refilling carts.

NOTE: Firefly WHITE ink goes into the BLACK position cartridge.

3. Remove colored fill hole plug and insert syringe tip (without needle) snugly into the fill hole.4. Hold cartridge and syringe together with one hand, pull syringe plunger up to remove air from cartridge and release plunger to allow ink to be drawn into cart, repeat until cartridge is filled with ink. NOTE: Inside most model carts is a circle chamber. It is very important this chamber is at least 1/2 filled with ink to allow for proper ink flow.5. Disconnect syringe from cartridge, then insert rubber plug securely into the fill hole. 6. Remove air vent tab from cartridge. Make certain that the air vent hole is fully open. Do NOT remove top or side labels from cartridge. Gently tap the filled cartridges a few times - exit valve down - to force air up and ink down.7. Install cartridges into the printer, making sure they snap firmly in place. Wait approximately 20 minutes to allow ink to settle and air to rise. Run two or three cleaning cycles to purge colored ink from the print head. Confirm a good nozzle pattern. You will only be able to see the nozzle check patterns using a UV/black light. Now you are ready to print.

Syringes and needles can be rinsed out with warm water and air dried for reuse. Refer to printing instructions above for best results with Firefly ink.

Refilling Cartridges with InkKeep track of the ink level and do not allow cartridges to run dry. Gently shake ink bottles to ensure pigment is in suspension before filling or refilling carts. Always verify that cartridges are filled and refilled with the correct ink.

1. Have ink, blunt needles and syringes ready on a work surface before removing carts from printer.2. Remove colored plug from the cartridge fill hole and leave air vent hole open as well. Draw approximately 15ml’s of ink into the syringe. Leaving needle attached to syringe, insert needle tip into cartridge fill hole. Gently push syringe plunger to slowly refill cartridge with ink. Tap side of cart gently with knuckle to force ink down and air up to get the most ink inside. Once cartridge is refilled with ink, remove needle and reinsert fill hole plug snugly into cartridge. Reinstall cartridge and wait 10-15 minutes for ink to settle then do one cleaning cycle. After carts have been refilled, always print a nozzle check before printing.

NOTE: If the cartridge and circle chamber are completely empty of ink, refill using the vacuum method as described under “Filling Procedure” above. The air vent hole must be sealed in order to vacuum fill, electrical tape works well for this.

Cartridge Chips Auto Reset (For Refillable Cartridges with ARC) NOTE: Ink levels will only reset when the ink out light appears on the printer. Only a cartridge that reads empty will reset. Less than full cartridges will not be mistakenly reset to read full, which could cause a cartridge to run dry.

When a cartridge indicates empty in the printer (solid red light), remove and refill the cartridge with ink as per refilling instructions above. Once refill is completed, re-insert the cartridge and its chip will reset to 90% full. ARC reset in error - please remove the complete set of cartridges and disconnect power and USB/Cables. Leave the printer off for at least 45 minutes. Plug the printer’s power cord back in, turn the printer on and re-insert the complete set of refillable cartridges. You can reconnect the printer USB/Cable after your printer recognizes the refillable cartridges. If you wish to refill and reset all cartridges at once, a chip resetter can be used to manually reset the ink levels to read full.

Trouble Shooting & Helpful Information* Use the printer on a regular basis for best function. To keep the ink moving thru the cartridges and head moist, print a small image or do a cleaning cycle at least once a week. It is not recommended to leave pigment inks installed in a printer that will be unused for an extended period of time. Please contact our support department if you plan to abandon your printer for more than a month.

* Long term storage of printer: we do not recommend letting a printer with pigmented inks to sit unused for extended periods of time. It is best to remove the ink by installing a set of flush cartridges to flush ink from the print head. This will allow for safe long term storage.

*Firefly inks are sensitive to UV light, therefore should be stored in the dark for the longest shelf life.

* Monitor and maintain humidity levels between 40-50% in the printing area. Both low and high humidity can cause problems with printer, ink or paper.

Question: Do I wait till the OEM cartridges are empty before installing the Refillable cartridges? Answer: No! Please confirm that your printer is printing correctly by running a nozzle check. Then replace your OEM or compatible cartridges with our refillable cartridges. First verify that the cartridges are full of ink and the air vent hole is open. Printing should then be seamless. Question: My printer does not recognize the cartridges. Answer: Please compare the numbers on the refill cartridges and the Epson OEM carts to make sure they match. If any of your refill cartridge numbers don’t match the OEM numbers, please send us pictures of the cartridge labels and chips. Question: When I print there are large blobs of ink on my page. Answer: Keeping your printer clean is crucial to function and print quality. Capping station waste ink and dust build up transfers to the bottom of the print head causing ink to drip or smear on the paper. A clean capping station will help keep the pint head clean and working well. Please follow instructions on our website Tech Support Knowledgebase page under Printer Maintenance (titled “Two Main Cleaning procedures”).

Question: I have filled the cartridges with ink but no ink comes out of the cartridges when I try to print.Answer: Make sure the air vent tab is completely removed and the air vent hole open. Gently tap the cartridges several times - exit valve down - on a folded paper towel. This forces the ink down and releases any air that might be restricting ink flow. Reinstall the set of cartridges snugly into the printer’s cartridge carriage for a tight seal then do 1-2 cleaning cycles and print a nozzle check. If there are still missing nozzles, wait about 15 minutes then do another cleaning cycle and print a nozzle check. The circle chamber inside the cart must be at least 1/2 filled with ink for proper ink flow, which is why the vacuum fill method is used. If the circle chamber does not contain ink, refill the cartridge using the vacuum method. Be sure to tape the air vent closed for this procedure.

Question: When I print there are lines on the paper. Answer: Lines on the paper are often caused my missing or mis-firing nozzles (called “banding”). Mis-alignment can also cause lines in the print. Print a nozzle check to make sure all positions are fully and correctly printing. If there are missing or mis-firing nozzles, make sure the air vent tab is fully removed and air vent hole open. Gently tap cartridges a few times - exit valve down - on a folded paper towel. This forces the ink down and release any air that may be restricting ink flow. Reinstall the set of cartridges snugly into the printer’s cartridge carriage for a tight seal then do 1-2 cleaning cycles before printing another nozzle check. If all nozzles are printing and in the correct positions (not mis-firing), then align the printer to the paper thickness you are printing on.
