IntroductionJ ohann Sebastian Bach composed for the 1ute through-out most of his life. The First Lute Suite was composed inWeimar (1708-1723), the Fourth Lute Suite, the Preludein C minor and the Fuge in G minor in Cothen (1717-1723), the Second Lute Suite, the Third Lute Suite, andthe Prelude, Fuge, and Allegro in Leipzig (1723-1750).Bach also wrote specifically for the lute in an aria in theSaint J ohn Passion and in a recitative in the Funeral Music
for Queen Christiane Eberhardine. We know that Bach wasa good friend of the great German lutenist Silvius LeopoldWeiss and establíshed contacts with J. Kropfgans and E. G.Baron, both well-known lutenists in Europe. While livingin Cothen Bach invented an instrument he called a Lute-
Clavicembalo, a keyboard instrument meant to imitate thesound of a 1ute. This leads one to assume that much ofBach's lute music was meant for this instrument or that
the instruments were interchangeable. In all the Suites, however, the writing is completely idiomatic to the 1ute.The Fourth Lute Suite and the Fuge in G minor are tran-scriptions from the solo violín partitas and the Third LuteSuite is a transcription from the solo cello suites. The re-maining compositions were written exclusively for the lute.
In this edition 1 have tried to footnote every editorialchange, with the exception of octave transposition andomamentation. Octave transposition is shown r,. This in-dicates that it was written down an octave in the original.
1 wou1d suggest that one should use this book in con-junction with the Bach-Gesellschaft edition to realize anychanges in omamentation. All the phrase markings from
the Gesellschaft have been kept intacto A dotted 1ine Qindicates a 1eft-hand slur and is always editorial. ~.~.
