Homecoming 2012

In what is becoming a tradition of sorts, GT Delts from California to New Hampshire and from Chicago to Key West (and many points in between) descended on Atlanta in late October 2012 for the sixth annual ’60s Delt Alumni Homecoming festivities. The high-light of the weekend was the reception at Ansley Golf Club in mid-town, held on October 26. On Saturday before the game, there was free form tail-gating and hanging with current members at the Shelter and then block seating for the (forgettable) game against the “Big Love” team (BYU for you non-HBO types).

Close to 60 Gamma Psi Alumni Gathered in Atlanta for the 1960s Ole Boy Reunion

Brothers from the late ’50s and early ’60s gather with their ladies for the reunion photo.

This past football season, the Gamma Psi chap-ter organized its first annual Homecoming Alumni Gala. Hosted at the Historic Academy of Medicine, the event offered dinner, an open bar, an awards presentation, and a chance for undergraduates and alumni to connect in a for-mal environment. More than 50 alumni tickets were sold with guests boasting graduation dates from 1960s to present day.

The event began in the impressive main hall under the original Gone with the Wind chandelier as the grand piano serenaded in the background and undergrads shared recent Gamma Psi accomplish-ments while alumni shared memories of their time at Delta Tau Delta.

Then, all of our guests were invited into the Academy’s spacious auditorium. The presentation began with current chapter president Ben Sullivan’s report on the current undergraduate Delta Tau Delta chapter. He highlighted our newly expanded American Heroes Week. This event that began with a social to honor a brother deployed in the Middle East a few years ago. It has now expanded into a week of campus-wide philanthropy, sorority mixers, and community involvement. Brother Sullivan also noted improvements to Delta Shelter, such as our new $27,000 front yard brick patio renovation.

During the award ceremony, Brother

Zachary Johnson, GY 1303, ’92 received the first annual Gamma Psi Alumni of the Year Award. Zach has been a key contributing mem-ber to our top-notch alumni advising team, which provides consistent, quality guidance.

Trophies were also presented to win-ners of our 5th Annual Delta Tau Delta Homecoming Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament featured close to 40 alumni accompanied by one undergraduate team. Congratulations to the undergraduate team of Brothers Andrew Caldwell, GY 1560, ’08, Chad Cavender, GY 1586, ’09, Matt Miles, GY 1592, ’10 and Ryan Beard, GY 1612,

2 Spring 2013

With more than $10,000 raised for charitable causes, 2012 was one of the most successful years in the chapter’s recent philanthropic history.

The first major event of the semester was Relay For Life, benefitting the American Cancer Society. Several brothers walked a marathon in memory of those that have been affected by cancer. Gamma Psi came in first place with more than $2,500 raised. Our booth was also the most successful booth at the Relay. This year we are currently in first place and have raised over $3,500. Our goal is $5,000.

Gamma Psi then held a philanthropy mixer to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Delt’s national philanthropy. We partnered up with Alpha Gamma Delta and went to “Strike Diabetes Away” by bowling. More than $1,000 was raised.

In the fall, we had the opportunity to start a new philanthropic tradition by hosting the first American Heroes Week. This was a week dedicated to our troops overseas. We started the week by having a supply drive to collect things that we could send to the troops.

This was followed by a campus-wide BBQ, which raised close to $2,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project. On Thursday, Gamma Psi had a philanthropy mixer with Alpha Chi Omega.

Along with these events, we also participated in many other endeavors such as walks, blood drives, and sorority events. We are looking forward to an even better year for Gamma Psi’s philanthropy.

Co-op Ryan Beard, ΓΨ 1612, ’11 Excels both Academically and Athletically

Ryan Beard, GY 1612 is a second-year indus-trial engineering major from Alpharetta, Ga., and was initiated in the fall 2011. Through his academic excellence and persever-ance, he has started a cooperative work assign-ment with Bosch Rexroth in Fountain Inn, S.C., and is currently working his first term of a three-term assignment. This past fall, Ryan was a member of the Chapter’s Honor Board and also worked as a student assistant at Career

Services here at Georgia Tech.

Ryan excels in athletics and is one of the star players on the Georgia Tech Club Baseball team.

He is the Sunday starting pitcher, meaning he starts every Sunday game during the regular season. He is one of the best pitchers on the team and has

the most wins. He is also, arguably, the team’s best hitter. His batting average and slugging percentage are the best on the team, while he also has the second most RBIs on the team. His impressive stats don’t end there, as Ryan has the most homeruns on the team.

Congratulations to Eaman Fatemi ΓΨ 1604, ’11 and Jeff

McNabb, ΓΨ 1603, ’11 for achieving 4.0 GPAs.

’11 for taking home the Tournament Trophy. Congratulations to Mike Miller, GY 1485, ’04 on taking home the trophy and gift card for Longest Drive.

This year’s Homecoming Gala will again be hosted at the Historic Academy of Medicine on November 1, 2013. If you are interested in attending, please e-mail [email protected] for more information. Tickets, including new group rates, are available now.

3The Gamma Sigh

My praise to the late Jimmy St. John, GY 560, ’56, for his good work as treasurer and the smooth transition he afforded me as I assumed the office in July. In addition to our usual maintenance expenses, the Board has managed projects valued at about $30,000 during the last 12 months. These projects include:

• Installation of a public water supply back flow preventer required by the City of Atlanta.

• Track lighting in the common room with ten fixtures.

• Re-pointing spots in the exterior brick masonry

to prevent water intrusion.• Replacement of the upper deck bathroom

vanity, sinks, mirror and door frame.• Replaced the commode stall partitions and

doors in the middle and lower decks.• Installation of drop-ceiling tiles in the dining area.• Replaced the failed 3-door reach-in cooler

with a new Hoshizaki cooler for the kitchen Addition of an engineered wood floor in the hidden bar.

• Replaced the ceiling and related electrical wiring in the room off the hidden bar, now called the executive board room.

• Installed an ice machine heat exhaust system to the outside.

• Replaced a 2-ton compressor in the air conditioning system.

• Replaced water cooler on lower deck.

We are now under way with window replacements, a few at a time, depending on our cash situation. Our house, built in 1924, requires loving and constant care, and we are trying to do just that.

Irv Hoffman, GY 612, ’57 House Corp Treasurer

It was another successful turnout for this year’s annual Homecoming golf tournament with eight teams competing. The tournament was once again held the Friday morning before the Homecoming game at the North Fulton golf course. Teams teed off at 9 a.m. and consisted of alumni of all ages as well as one undergraduate team. Hats off to this year’s winning team, alumni Nathan Massey, Lee Hamilton, Sam Huffman, and Chris Pace. The winning team was recognized and presented with a trophy at this year’s 1st Annual Homecoming Gala. Awards were also presented to winners of the Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive contests. This event continues to be a great way to kick off the Homecoming weekend and is something that many alumni look forward to every year. Next year will be the 5th year of the tournament and hopefully the largest yet. It will once again be scheduled for the Friday before the Homecoming game, so we hope you can clear your schedule and join us. A big thank you to everyone listed below for your participation this year. We look

forward to seeing you out there again for Homecoming 2013. If interested in playing on Friday morning, November 1 of Homecoming Weekend, or with any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. More details will be sent out in the near future.

We appreciate your decision to return to Gamma Psi and actively support the Alumni Association. Seventy-five Gamma Psi alumni, listed below, renewed their fraternal bond by gifting $11,220 to the to the Association in 2012. Your dedication and generosity enables the House Corporation to continue maintaining and refurbishing the Shelter and helps the Association to expand our communications program beyond two news-

letters per year.

In 2013, the Association will activate the Gamma Psi-tings web-site and will have e-blast capabilities to the members with e-mail addresses. These communications offer the opportunity to all Gamma Psi Brothers to communicate with each other, share “remember when” stories, and energize our Delta Tau Delta Brotherhood in the “virtual” world. Does it get any better than that?

Many Thanks to Our Generous Gamma Psi Alumni Support
