Checks are preferred, made payable to First Baptist Church and marked “Shoeboxes”. If you give cash, be sure it is marked with your name so your giving record can be marked accordingly. Our church secretary will prepare one check to cover the number of boxes that we prepare on that night. Can you still pack a box on your own at home? Most certainly! Many of you enjoy purchasing items personally and packing a shoebox, and we want to encourage you to do that again this year. We will have shoeboxes available for you to take home. These shoeboxes will be due some time in November. We encourage you to continue to bring shoebox items or to bring them with you on the 28 th of October, but even if you don’t contribute shoebox items, we still want you to help us pack the boxes. This is going to be a fun, exciting night for your family as you prepare a Christmas shoebox gift for a special boy or girl somewhere in the world. It will be a fun, exciting night for all of us as we do this together as a church family. Mark your calendar now!

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

It’s Almost Shoebox Time!! The Compelled By Love Missions Group announced at the beginning of the year that our church would be preparing for Operation Christmas Child all year long with the expectation of at least doubling the number of shoeboxes prepared by First Baptist Church in 2008. We gave you opportunities to bring items each month and we have sorted these items by age group. Many thanks to you for the donations!

It will soon be time to prepare the boxes for delivery. We want this part of the project to be a fun mission event for your family, so here’s the plan:

On Wednesday, October 28, at 6:45 p.m., we are asking you to come as a family to the Fellowship Hall. We will have a form for you to fill out which will be put into one of the boxes so the child who receives your box will know something about the family who sent it. You might even have a family snapshot made that night to accompany your note. Wouldn’t it be neat to get a letter from the child who received your shoebox? Each family will be directed to go in an orderly fashion to one of six tables where shoeboxes will be available and items for one of the six categories (age/gender) will be laid out. Your family will pick and choose the items you want to go into your box and you will pack it as full as you can. Once it is packed, you will put your form on the top and take it to the labeling station where it will be labeled appropriately.

Samaritan’s Purse asks for donations of $7.00 per box to cover the shipping cost. If you are able to donate funds for this purpose (you can pay for as many boxes as you wish), we will ask you to bring your donation to a table set aside for this purpose.

We encourage you to continue to bring shoebox items or to bring them with you on the 28th of October, but even if you don’t contribute shoebox items, we still want you to help us pack the boxes. This is going to be a fun, exciting night for your family as you prepare a Christmas shoebox gift for a special boy or girl somewhere in the world. It will be a fun, exciting night for all of us as we do this together as a church family. Mark your calendar now!

On October 10, we have an opportunity for missions in our own county. On that day a number of churches in Gaston County are coming together in the Highland Community of Gastonia to work on 26 homes. Activities include painting, repair work, landscaping, and anything else that might be needed. The city of Gastonia will be donating $1000 per house to cover costs. In addition, a goal has been set to provide food through Angel Food Ministries to 2000 families in Gaston County. The cost per box of food is $30 and can feed a family of 4 for a week. Fundraisers have been put in place to raise the money for this mission. There will also be a Free Flea Market that day with donated items distributed to needy families. Items that will be accepted are winter clothes, furniture, household goods, and working appliances. How can we at First Baptist help? (1) Volunteer to work on one of the houses Saturday, October 10. (2) Donate $30 for the purchase of a box of food. (3) Donate items for the Flea Market or volunteer to help organize or deliver any large items. Anyone interested in working that day can meet at the church at 7:30 a.m. and we will take the bus or van to the worksite. Hopefully we will have enough to warrant taking the new bus! If you are interested in participating in some way, you can contact Jane Collins at [email protected] or 704-827-2114 or let Kim or Kendell know at the church office. Please let us know ahead of time if you would like to participate!

HOPE FOR GASTON

Coming Changes to Missions Giving Options

As of January 1, 2010, the Baptist State Convention will no longer offer the multiple giving plans A, B, C and D. Note: this is a change from the Baptist State Convention; this is not a change we have instituted.

There will be one plan which will resemble the current Plan A and D combined. B & C will no longer exist. Also, the new Baptist State Convention plan will no longer fund many programs that have been receiving money in the past. The Baptist Retirement Homes of NC are already eliminated from this budget, and the five NC Baptist colleges will be by 2011.

As a church, we are faced with the option of giving 100% to the new plan or developing our own giving plans. Because we feel that members should have the option to give as they feel led, we have decided to create our own First Baptist “plans” which will be similar to the current Plans A, B and C. Our goal is to allow you to have giving options as similar to our present options as possible. We want to ensure you do not lose the freedom to choose the option to which you feel God is leading you.

The Finance Team, Mission Team, and Admin Board have been working together over the last few months to develop an approach for our 2010 Cooperative Program giving (the 2009 Budget amount was $10,000). We are still in the process of finalizing the percentages for these plans and will be communicating the finalized versions in late October or early November. We will present our giving plans in the business meeting November 8.

In His Love, The Finance Team, Mission Team and Admin Board

Happy anniversary

To Our Church Family, Thank you so much for your prayers, cards, and food during the time of our mother’s passing. Your many acts of kindness made this time much easier for us and we appreciate you. Sam & Annette Williams Thank you for getting us off to a great start. The school supplies are greatly appreciated and helps many students. Ida Rankin School Thank you for your recent donation of school supplies to our students at East Gaston High School. Because of your generosity, we are able to educate children who attend school without school supplies. It’s amazing the impact a few notebooks and pencils makes on a student who’s parents are unable to provide these necessary tools. Thanks again for blessing our students and school with the gift of school supplies. Sincerely, Angela Ferguson, School Social Worker

Lectio Divina… Read the Bible as though it were something entirely unfamiliar, as though it had not been set

before you ready made…Face the book with a new attitude as something new…Read aloud the words written in the book in front of you, hear the word you utter, and let it reach you.-- Martin Buber A huge portion of our journey of faith is dependent on the Bible. We Baptists have always proclaimed ourselves as people of The Book, and it is our guide on all matters of faith and practice. However, I would add that there are two ways to read the Bible, the Sacra Pagina and the Lectio Divina, and we need both of them for our spirirtual growth.

Sacra pagina, the sacred pages, is what we most often do for Bible study, sermons and Sunday school. It is the process of breaking the Scriptures into its constituent parts – what we preachers call exegesis of the text. This is where we consider the author’s intention of the text, the geographic or historical underpinnings of the text, or the style of the text. On the other hand, Lectio Divina, the Divine Reading, is an ancient method of devotionally reading the Scriptures or “praying” the Scriptures.

For most of us, we read the Bible a few minutes in a devotional or for our Sunday school class, but, to be honest, we probably spend more time reading someone’s reflections on the text, either in a devotional or a quarterly, than we actually spend in the Holy Word itself.

I confess that I am not immune to this. Indeed, I may be the most guilty as I read the text to use it for sermons and Bible studies. I may spend hours in my library on a particular text without taking the time to just listen for and to the text. As Jan exasperatingly asked me once, “So, how many books do you have on the Gospel of Luke?” (By the way, when you include complete commentaries, the answer is 14!)

For this reason, several years ago, I started working to include the Lectio Divina into my spiritual disciplines. This is a method where you learn to listen to the text and what the Spirit may be saying to you in that text. The Lectio Divina is meant to be two-way communication – God speaks to us through the Word and we respond to God’s calling.

The following is a model you can use. (By the way, I suggest using a Bible that you find very readable that does not have a bunch of study notes. Indeed, it is best done with a Bible with no study notes – use the notes for Sacra Pagina. The method is to listen for God, not some writer of notes!) Read the text three times. Read slowly each time and pause between readings for a minute or two. During the second reading, take note of the word or phrase that caught your attention. During the third reading, stop when you are touched by a word or phrase. You have found the Word for you that day. Then follow through with reflecting on that passage. Take several minutes to think about that word or phrase and what it tells you that day. Then, respond; talk to God about what struck you. Vocalize a prayer of love or praise or lament or thanksgiving as you feel at that moment. Finally, rest. Take a few minutes to listen to God and enjoy being in God’s presence.

Unfortunately, space here does not give me the option of telling you all my feelings about the Lectio Divina, but I can tell you that it is one of the most rewarding spiritual disciplines in my life. It reminds me to listen for God’s still, small voice through the Scriptures.

The Lectio Divina is be a wonderful thing to take up. To get started, use the method on the 51st Psalm (other suggestions include the 23rd Psalm, the 121st Psalm, Psalm 139:1-18 (only six verses at a time), Romans 8:26-27 or Romans 8:37-39.) Listen for God’s Word; it is amazing what you will hear.

Grace and peace, Kendell Cameron

HYMN OF THE MONTH OCTOBER : “JESUS LOVES ME” 344 CHINA

The Warner family struggled staggering financial woes in the early part of 1837. Their state forced the family to move into a ram-shackle home on Constitution Island, directly across from West Point Military Academy. Sisters Anna and Susan Warner decided they would do their part to help with the family finances, and began to write stories and poems for publication. This launched parallel careers for the two sisters, resulting in 106 publications, 18 of them co-authored. One of the most successful joint projects was a book titles Say and Seal which tells the story of a child who is dying. His Sunday School teacher took the child in his arms, rocked him back and forth and improvised a little song: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” The novel became a best seller, second only to Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Hymn writer William Bradbury read the verses of the poem and set the words to music with a child-like lilt. This song soon became one of the best-known and loved songs throughout the world. It was especially popular in China, possibly due in part to the pentatonic nature of the melody. For forty years, Susan and Anna conducted Bible classes for cadets at West Point. They were both buried with full military honors. They are the only civilians buried in the military cemetery at West Point, and to this day, their home on Constitution Island is maintained by West Point as a museum to their memory.

WRAP-UP YOUTH CHOIR FESTIVAL AND KEYBOARD EXTRAVAGANZA

Our First Youth Choir Kick-off Festival was a big success! We had over 60 participants, and, thanks to the hard work over the weekend, we are well on our way to a successful year with Genesis. Many thanks to all of you who came out to support our “Keyboard Extravaganza.” We had a great concert of music from our FBC Keyboard artists. Just as importantly, we raised a nice jackpot for our Building Fund. Thanks to all those who enjoyed the concert, we were able to raise $950 for our Building Fund. We are indeed blessed to have such great musical talent at FBC...and even more important is a willingness on the part of those folks to use their talent and share those gifts with us! Thank you for blessing our lives with your gifts!

On Saturday, October 17, the children will be going to Boo Blast at Carowinds. The typical rides will be open, but during Boo Blast, there will be hay rides, a “foam zone”, the Fraidy Cat Show, Kiddie-oke, Trick or Treat in the park, a costume parade, and much more!

Children and adults are encouraged to eat an early lunch and then meet at the church at noon to load the vans. We will stay at the park until Boo Blast ends at 5pm and then

return to the church around 5:30 p.m.

Children may wear costumes, but it is recommended that costumes not be elaborate or have lots of pieces that could get lost or become difficult to keep up with at the park.

Please contact Jeff Spargo for details and cost information.

We must know by Wednesday, October 14 if your child plans to attend. If you are available to help, we need chaperones!

Youth: Your first lock in of the year will be Friday, October 23. We will meet at the church at 7:00 p.m. and then go to dinner in Charlotte followed by a fun activity (TBD). Then we will return to the church for a night of games and other fun. You need about $20 to pay

for your dinner and then the fun event.

I am open to your idea for our fun event. Give me ideas ASAP so I can make arrangements for it.

Please RSVP by text or e-mail so I can have a count of everyone going.

Join us on Wednesday, November 4 as we go to the Barn Dinner Theater’s matinee performance of The Service at Rocky Bluff. The cost will be $45 per person which includes your buffet meal, gratuity, the play, and transportation. Spaces are limited so please see Kim to pay as soon as possible.

From the Barn Dinner Theater’s website: The Service At Rocky Bluff How does a church keep a pastor search committee from ever coming back and taking their pastor away to another church? Seeing The Service at Rocky Bluff will let you discover one way. This is a musical play about friendship and how we influence each other for good. It’s full of old time Gospel music with a few surprises. The Service at Rocky Bluff is one service you don’t want to miss!

Please note this is a slight date change from our earlier announced date. This will be a Wednesday matinee. We may make it back to church for Wednesday night Bible study, but we cannot guarantee that. We plan to meet at the church at 10:30 a.m. on that morning to go to the show. October 10 is our final deadline for payment.

Believe it or not, plans are already under way for this year’s Night in Bethlehem which will take place on Friday night, December 11th.

If you and your family plan to be a part of Night in Bethlehem and you need a costume, you must buy your materials and bring them to church by Sunday, October 11th. Please label your name, what the garment piece to be made is (a vest, tunic, etc.) and the sizes for each person taking part.

For details on how much material to buy based on size and what costume garments can be made, please contact Kim Payne or Jeff Spargo at the church office.

If you are able to sew or cut, we need your help to make costumes! Please contact Brenda Horton if you can help: 704-827-6587.

Just for Seniors to the barn dinner theater

Seniors: Join us on October 19 for a nice trip in the mountains to enjoy the fall colors. We will meet at the church at 9:00 a.m., stop for breakfast, and then go up to enjoy the park-way. We will stop for a late lunch at the famous family style restaurant Shatley Springs near Jefferson at 2:00 p.m. (This was the earliest time we could procure a reservation for the entire group.) We may also stop to see the frescoes while there.

The cost is $20 for travel and the meal. Please pay Kim so we can have a count of those going.
