A CONTINUING CONUNDRUM One continuing conundrum of churches is leadership, and specifically board chairperson, a
job many are reluctant to do. Maybe he/she doesn’t feel like they have the talent and organizational
skills to do a good job. Maybe it’s because it involves working with unpredictable staff people. May-
be it’s because he/she feels like they will have too many opportunities to attempt to please everyone,
to put out fires, to smooth ruffled feathers, and to preside over meetings that go on forever and ac-
complish little. Maybe it’s because the pay and rewards are subsistent, at best. Maybe it’s because he/
she feels like the church’s success (numerical, financial, program-wise, etc.) for one year rests solely
on them, and they don’t want to fail.
I don’t understand it.
I’ve never been a board chairperson.
But consider a different perspective. As board chairperson you get to discover talents and
skills you never knew you had. You realize you are partners with God in his plan for the ages and
become a part in how his plans unfold right here in our hometown. You get to see prayers answered,
seeds of faith grow, the joy of cheerful giving, gracious sacrifice, and people that love across their
differences. You get to witness people stepping up in faith and answering the call of God to ministry
and mission right here in Perry. You get to grow in your appreciation of the efforts men and women
of faith make to maintain the unity of the spirit and the bond of peace. You get the chance to affirm
the gifts of others, celebrate how God provides again and again, and observe joyful humble service in
action.
As board chairperson you quickly come to know the future of the church rests in God’s
hands and not ours, that Jesus is building his church, and we can trust him on this.
As board chairperson you join a group of great leaders of the past. We stand on the founda-
tion of men and women who have served the Lord and his church with joy and sacrifice and humility.
Where the church is today is because of their leadership. And we are grateful.
The past leaders of this church weren’t perfect, far from it. Nonetheless, Jesus didn’t call
perfect disciples. He invited them to trust him enough to step behind him, roll up their sleeves, take a
towel and basin, get on their knees and work with him. It is my opinion that’s the way Jesus still ac-
complishes his mission today.
Someone asked me after the board meeting, “Where are we going to find a board
chairperson for this next year?”
It’s perplexing. And yet, experience has taught me God loves to work in perplexing
times.
I answered that person, “God will raise someone up. That’s what he does best.”
And I believe he will.
In His love, Martin

A Sincere Thank you Dear First Christian,
It is hard to believe that we are finally be-
ginning this journey. We ae so grateful for
your partnership, enabling us financially
to be doing this work. We know that you
are also remembering us an lifting us up,
and we covet and cherish that.
The journey of “becoming” — learning to
be part of a new community — is definite-
ly not easy. We see a steep learning curve
ahead of us. Hanan and Lauren are still
adjusting and very attached to us. Be His
grace, we see then slowly improving and
are grateful. We daily need wisdom and
grace to know how to parent them and help
them adjust, as we learn ourselves.
Sometimes, small things get to us — a fau-
cet that is constantly dripping, the endless
stream of ants. The seemingly unending
sicknesses.
Please continue to remember us and check
on us. And let us know how we can re-
member you.
In His love, C and K
Ask not what your children’s
ministry can do for you, but
what you can do for your chil-
dren’s ministry!” – JFK
Our new VBS-Style Sunday School
has incorporated songs, skits, small
groups, and even games as we’ve uti-
lized fun new themes to draw attention
to timeless truths!
Over the last few months our chil-
dren’s Sunday School class has grown,
and we are seeing lots of new faces on
Sunday mornings!!
Many of these children have no real
church experience, and this may be
their first time attending a church on a regular basis!
HOW EXCITING!!!
For this important ministry to continue we need your help!
There’s a lot that goes into making Sunday meaningful for
children.
Most of our young people do not have a parent that drives
them to church, instead the church van must go and get them.
After they arrive we feed them a light-snack breakfast, be-
cause many of them do not eat breakfast on the weekends.
They attend their Sunday school class while the young adults
slip away for a few minutes of study and conversation. After
Sunday School, we try to sit quietly together in the sanctuary
observing and absorbing worship and answering the whis-
pers…“Why do we pray so much? What’s communion, can I
have some? Why do I have to sit still while that guy talks?”
Then it’s back on the van, to drop everyone off!
What a joy it is to serve these little ones, and their families!
There are many ways to be involved with our Children’s
ministries –Would you consider partnering with us over the
summer to drive a Sunday School Van, Serve PopTarts, Teach Class for a Week, or Sit With the Children in the Sanctuary
