GENERAL INFORMATION OF OUR CATECHISM PROGRAM

T he catechism program for children at our parish is part of our Office of Religious Education that coordinates the

teaching of the faith and preparation to receive the Sacra-ments. At Santa Clara Parish we have two locations/options for Catechism formation:

Church of Santa Clara (Oxnard) Program Length: 2-year (September-May) Catechism days: Once a week: MON, TUE or WED Class time: 4:45pm-6:00pm (1¼ hours) Language: English & Spanish (limited) Minimum age: 8 years old (or turning 8 within the year) Other requirements: -Parent’s formation classes (6-8 a year) -Sunday Mass attendance (Offertory) -Parish devotional celebrations Material Fees: 1st year $75/2nd year $95 (active family) (non-refundable) Includes textbook and Guidelines booklet 1st year $115/2nd year $135 (inactive fam.)

Chapel of Santa Clara (El Rio) Program Length: 2-year (September-May) Catechism days: Once a week: SATURDAYS Class times: 8:30am, 10am, or 11:30am (1¼ hours) Language: English & Spanish (limited) Minimum age: 8 years old (or turning 8 within the year) Other requirements: -Parent’s formation classes (6-8 a year) -Sunday Mass attendance (Offertory) -Parish devotional celebrations Material Fees: 1st year $75/2nd year $95 (active family) (non-refundable) Includes textbook and Guidelines booklet 1st year $115/2nd year $135 (inactive fam.)

DEFINITION OF “ACTIVE” AND “INACTIVE FAMILY”

I n order to enjoy the benefits of being a parishioner at Santa Clara Church & Chapel, the family of the child must be regis-

tered and active in our parish or chapel of Santa Clara: con-stantly coming to Sunday Mass and being enrolled in our offerto-

ry program (envelopes). Upon registration of the child, the fami-ly must have been active for at least the last three previous months. If family have multiple children to enroll a $10 per child discount will be applied; children must be siblings and living at the same address. Mass attendance is accounted with envelopes turned in on Sunday; failing to come to Mass at Santa Clara will affect your status from active to inactive family (higher fee).

The families that are not registered or non-active at our parish at the time of enrolling their child or children will pay a higher fee. However, it is required for them to register and remain ac-tive through out the 1st and 2nd year of Catechism program. No other discounts apply if not registered or remain active.

REGISTRATION/ENROLLMENT

O n the day of registration, only the mother or father or le-gal guardian of the child may fill out and sign the

“registration form” and present the following items:

Birth Certificate Baptismal Certificate Fee Picture Without the completed “registration form” and/or any of these items absent,

the child cannot be registered. Picture will be taken at our office.

If the child is not baptized, he or she may still register for Com-munion. On a later date we’ll have a special baptism date.

After the child has been registered, the family will receive a letter by mail with information of the class and teacher’s name needed for the first day of classes.

ABSENCES AND TARDINESS

T he children participating in our catechism program are al-lowed two (2) unjustified absences and two (2) justified

absences—accompanied by an official document justifying the absence (doctor, school, etc.). Two late arrivals to class (5 minutes) will make one (1) absence. Absences due to sports ac-tivities are not justifiable absences. The child & family must nev-er forget participating at our Sunday’s Mass celebrations; emergency absences must be justified. If student exceeds al-

lowed absences, including, four (4) Sunday absences, he/she will automatically be out of our program. Sunday Mass attend-ance is verified through our envelope/offering program.

If the child will be absent, an “absent slip” must be filled out seven days before and/or after the date to make it justifiable (available at our Catechism office). Late arrivals to classes are not justifiable. Phone calls will never be an official way of noti-fication of an absence. Please follow the proper form for this matter. The protocol for participating at every class, gathering, and mass requires that the child bring his/her student’s basic supplies: notebook, pen, textbook, prayer book, etc.

Parents The parents also have the responsibility of participating in six (6) Faith Formation Classes. These meetings are a requirement and failing to comply will leave your child out of our catecheti-cal program. In special circumstances, substitutes are allowed as long as the office approves them.

DRESS CODE AT CATECHISM CLASS OR ACTIVITIES

A s Christians we continue honoring God in the way we dress. Dressing modestly is always promoted at our catechetical

program. Upscale casual is always encouraged.

Boys. Sweat pants, shorts or pajamas are not allowed. Collar Shirts and t-shirts must have sleeves (short or long) and not have any type of propaganda of particular sports teams, liquor or beer, or any other image printed on them that is contrary to the integrity of our faith. Any dress shoe or tennis shoe are al-lowed; if sandals will be used, they must not be beach sandals (flip-flops) nor open back sandals. Slippers are not permitted. Caps or hats are also not allowed.

Girls. Sweat pants or shorts are not permitted; shorts must be with moderate cut. Miniskirts and skirts too short or revealing are not allowed. Blouses and shirts must have sleeves and not have any type of propaganda of particular sports teams, liq-uor nor beer, or any other image printed on them that is contra-ry to the integrity of our faith. allowed; if sandals will be used, they must not be beach san-dals (flip-flops) or open back sandals. Slippers are not permit-ted. Caps or hats are also not allowed.

DRESS CODE WHEN COMING TO SUNDAY MASS/CHURCH

C oming to the Holy Mass is one of the most important op-portunities that we have to meet with Jesus; because of this

we must express our readiness to this encounter by offering a righteous heart and a modest way of dressing.

Boys. Dress pants or slacks must be used combined with dress shirts or collar shirts (polo shirts); shirts, tie and dress jacket would be ideal. Dress shoes and upscale formal shoes must be worn when coming to Mass. Shirts must have sleeves and not have any type of propaganda of particular sports teams, liq-uor or beer, or any other image printed contrary to the integri-ty of our faith; no tennis shoes, slippers, nor beach sandals or “flip-flop” sandals of any kind should be worn to Mass.

Girls. The ideal clothing for the girls is modest upscale dresses avoiding miniskirts or too revealing dresses, pants, and/or blouses. Blouses and shirts must have sleeves and not have any type of propaganda of particular sports teams, liquor or beer, or any other image printed contrary to the integrity of our faith; no tennis shoes nor beach sandals or “flip-flop” sandals of any kind should be worn to Mass. Slippers are not permitted.

DRESS CODE AT THE CELEBRATION OF FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

O n this special day more than ever formal dressing is part our worship and praise to our God. Children may wear the

traditional white garment dress code or any formal and modest clothing for the occasion. It is encouraged that parents & spon-sors follow the modest & formal dress code to encourage our children to honor our Lord Jesus Christ by their example.

Boys. The traditional white suit and shoes are encouraged. How-ever, black dress pants or slacks, dress black shoes, white shirt, tie, and jacket are ideal. If the family is not able to comply with this dress code, the child may dress in black pants, black shoes,

white shirt and tie only. Tennis shoes (i.e. converse) are not al-lowed.

Girls. All girls must be wearing a white dress with veil and white shoes (gloves are optional). If the family cannot afford a spe-cial dress for the occasion any formal dress will do; hair exten-sions are not encouraged.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SPONSORS

C andidates to be a First Communion Sponsor must fulfill the following requirements:

Godparents must be baptized, have received First Commun-ion, be confirmed and be practicing Catholics.

If Godparents are living with someone they must be married in the Catholic Church.

Godparent must be a practicing Catholic. The child can have one Godfather/Godmother only or both.

Two Godparents of the same gender are not allowed. Prior to the date of First Communion, Godparents are encour-

aged to go to confession. Each Godparent must complete the “Letter of Candidacy” that

is presented to their priest or delegate to fill out and stamped (seal). This form must be turned in to our Religious Education office by Easter Sunday.

Dress code for sponsors on the day of First Communion is modest and formal. Please avoid jeans, shorts, t-shirts. Miniskirts, sleeveless blouses

or dresses, flip-flops, etc. are not allowed.

CARE AND SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN

E very catechist or person involved with our children who is officially representing our parish has been fingerprinted

(background check) and has gone through a “Child Abuse Awareness” program. The catechist is also certified to assist parents in the teaching of the faith to our children. Parents must be responsible for bringing their children to classes on time and picking them up after class. Parents must pick up their children no later than 15 minutes after the class has ended; failing to

comply with this procedure may result in the calling to the local authorities for the protection and safety of the child.

PROVIDED REQUIRED MATERIAL

A fter the child is registered, the following material will be provided before or on the first day of class:

1. Bilingual Text book. The child must always bring it to class and if the book is not present at every class, he/she will be issued an unjustified absence. If lost, the fee to replace the book is $30.

2. Book of Prayers and Basic Teachings of the Faith. This booklet contains the basic and essentials of our faith. The child will be evaluated from this book. If lost, additional copies are $5 for each booklet.

3. Calendar and Program Information Booklet. Each registered child will receive one of these booklets. If lost, additional copies are $3 per booklet.

REQUIREMENTS TO GRADUATE FROM OUR PROGRAM

F or the children to receive the Sacrament of First Commun-ion there must be a family effort. Children and parents

must attend the required classes and meetings without exceed-ing the absences allowed.

Child Assuming the child’s behavior is good, the following require-ments are needed to graduate from our program:

1. Not exceeding the two (2) unjustified and two (2) justified absences to class, and our gathering activities Schedule. No unjustified absences to Sunday Mass are allowed.

2. Complete homework and/or assignments required by the teacher/catechist during the current program.

3. The child must participate in one retreat per year.

4. The child must pass the following three exams: In relationship to the class-book taught by the catechist. Basic Prayers and teaching of our Catholic Church. Know the order of Mass.

Parents The parents, those who are Catholic, must attend six (6) Faith Formation meetings for parents; dates to be announced. This is in addition to the mandatory meetings in preparation for the Sacrament, especially 2nd year students.

Family Our Sunday obligation to go to Mass must always be fulfilled. During the Catechism program the child and family must not be absent from their obligation more than four (4) times. Failing to go constantly to Sunday Mass may change the status of the family from “active” to “inactive”.

The combination of these requirements is needed for the child to graduate from our program. Santa Clara Parish reserves the right to add or cancel parts/chapters to this booklet. PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEO AT THE MASS OF HOLY COMMUNION

O ur office of Religious Education has hired professionals to deal with photo and video. Because of this, no other cam-

eras will be allowed during the Holy Mass. Please note that there will be instructions given about the photo session before and after the ceremony. The fee for pictures is additional.

WHEN THE PARENTS ARE SEPARATED OR DIVORCED

W hen the parents of the child are under these circumstances, many times the custody of the child is shared and either

parent does not support the child in his/her preparation to re-ceive Holy Communion. When the family is legally under these circumstances, the “registration form” must have a notation about it. Even when the child is absent too many times because of this, the family is still responsible to support the child in learn-ing the material given, passing the exams and completing the rest of the requirements mentioned on this booklet.

Failing to follow these procedures may result in the postponing of the reception of the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

E l programa de catecismo para nuestros niños forma parte de la oficina de Educación Religiosa que coordina las en-

programa, la familia deberá haber estado activa por lo menos los últimos tres (3) meses. Si la familia tiene dos o mas niños a registrar, se dará un descuento de $10 por cada uno; los niños deberán de ser hermanos y vivir en la misma residencia. Su participación en la Misa es con su sobre dominical. Si la familia no participa en la Misa dominical su estatus de “activo” pasará a ser “inactiva” pagando una cuota mas alta.

Las familias no registradas o inactivas en la parroquia contri-buirán una cuota mas alta. Sin embargo, es requisito el que se registren y participen activamente durante los dos años de Ca-tecismo. Para estas familias no hay ningún tipo de descuento.

REGISTRANDO SU NIŇO Ó NIŇA

E l día de la registración solamente los padres, mamá o pa-pá, y/o el tutor legal del niño podrá llenar y firmar la

“forma de registración” con los siguientes requisitos:

Acta de Nacimiento Acta de Bautismo Cuota Foto No se puede registrar al niño o niña sin esta “forma de registro” y con los requisitos mencionados. Foto será tomada en la oficina.

Si el niño no ha sido bautizado podrá registrarse para la 1ª Comunión y mas delante tendremos una ceremonia de bautizo.

Después de que el estudiante se haya registrado la familia re-cibirá una carta por correo (o el día de registración) con la in-formación de su clase, nombre del catequista, etc.

AUSENCIAS Y RETRASOS

L os niños participando de nuestro programa de catecismo solo se les permite dos (2) ausencias injustificadas y dos

(2) justificadas, acompañadas con documento oficial (doctor, escuela, etc.). Llegar dos veces tarde a clase (5 minutos) hacen una (1) falta/ausencia. La familia no debe olvidar su compro-miso dominical de la Santa Misa; casos de emergencia también tendrán que ser justificados. Si el niño excede cuatro ausencias en la Misa los domingos estará automáticamente fuera del pro-grama. La única forma de tomar lista de asistencia en la Santa Misa es con su sobre.

Si el niño va a estar ausente es importante, con tiempo, llenar la “forma de ausencia” justificada. Llegadas tarde a clase no son justificables. Llamadas por teléfono no se pueden conside-rar una justificación oficial de ausencia.

Es responsabilidad del niño traer a clases los utensilios o mate-rial necesarios como cuaderno, pluma, libro de texto, libro de oraciones, etc.

FORMA DE VESTIR EN CATECISMO/ACTIVIDADES

C omo cristianos también honramos a Dios en la forma de vestir. En nuestro programa de catecismo el vestir modes-

tamente es esencial. Forma casual-formal debe ser prioridad.

Niños. Evitar pantalones deportivos, shorts o pijamas. No se permiten camisas/camisetas sin mangas o con propaganda de equipos deportivos, alcohol u otras imágenes que atente contra nuestra integridad cristiana. Zapatos de vestir o tenis son acep-tables, sandalias o pantuflas no son aceptables. No gorras o cachuchas ni sombreros que causen distracción.

Niñas. Vestir con modestia evitando minifaldas, blusas escota-das o sin mangas. Evitar pantalones deportivos, shorts o pija-mas. No se permiten blusas/camisetas con propaganda que atenten contra la integridad de la fe cristiana. Zapatos de ves-tir o tenis son aceptables, sandalias o pantuflas no lo son. No gorras o cachuchas ni sombreros que causen distracción.

FORMA DE VESTIR EN LA MISA DOMINICAL

V enir a Misa los domingos es un encuentro con nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Por esta razón hay que expresar nuestro respe-

to a Dios vistiendo modestamente.

No traer camisas/camisetas sin mangas o con propa-ganda de equipos deportivos, alcohol u otras imágenes que atente contra nuestra integridad cristiana. FORMA DE VESTIR EL DÍA DE LA PRIMERA COMUNIÓN

E n este día tan especial mas que nunca hay que vestir for-malmente como manera de honrar a Dios. Los niños son

exhortados a vestir de forma modesta y tradicional (blanco). Al mismo tiempo es importante invitar a los papás y a los padri-nos a vestir de forma formal y modesta.

Niños. El traje blanco tradicional es siempre la mejor forma de vestir en este día. Sin embargo el traje negro, camisa blanca, corbata y saco son también recomendables.

Niñas. El vestir de blanco con velo y zapatos blancos son lo mas tradicional (guantes opcional); por favor no vestidos sin man-gas. Un vestido formal y modesto también recomendable.

REQUISITOS DE LOS PADRINOS

P ara poder ser candidatos a ser padrino o madrina hay que llenar ciertos requisitos:

Los padrinos deben estar bautizados, haber recibido la 1ª Comunión, haber sido Confirmados y practicar la fe católica.

Los padrinos tienen que estar o bien casados o bien solteros. Si casados, deben de estarlo en el Sacramento matrimonial.

Los padrinos deben ir a Misa los domingos. El niño/a pueden llevar un padrino, una madrina o los dos.

No se puede dos padrinos o dos madrinas. Antes de la 1ª Comunión, los padrinos han de ir a confesarse. Padrino o madrina llenar la forma “Carta de Candidatura”.

Esta es llenada por su sacerdote o delegado (sello parro-quia) y entregarla a mas tardar el Domingo de Pascua.

Los padrinos venir formalmente vestidos y madrinas han de vestir con modestia evitando minifaldas, vestidos sin mangas o escotados.

CUIDADO Y SEGURIDAD DE NUESTROS NIŇOS

C ada catequista o voluntario de nuestro programa tiene que pasar por una investigación de sus antecedentes pe-

nales y tomar un curso para detectar cualquier tipo de abuso infantil (VIRTUS). El catequista esta preparado para asistir a los padres en la educación de la fe de nuestros niños.

Los padres son responsables de traer a los niños a clases a tiempo y recogerlos inmediatamente después de clase. Los pa-dres o alguien autorizado deberán de recoger a sus niños 15 minutos después de que la clase haya terminado; el no hacer esto podría tener como resultado consultar a las autoridades civiles para protección (policía) y seguridad de nuestros niños.

MATERIAL QUE SE PROVEE

D espués de que el niño ha sido registrado, el siguiente ma-terial es proveído antes del primer día de clases:

1. Libro bilingüe de texto. El niño deberá de traer su libro siempre a clase. Si no lo trae se considerara una falta/ausencia. Si el libro es extraviado, el precio para rem-plazarlo es de $30.

2. Libro de Oraciones y enseñanzas de la Fe. Este folleto contiene lo básico y esencial de nuestra fe. El niño tam-bién será evaluado por su aprendizaje de este folleto. Si lo extravía, el costo para remplazarlo es de $5.

3. Folleto de Guía y lineamientos de Catecismo. Cada niño registrado recibirá este folleto donde los lineamientos y reglamentos del programa son clarificados. Cada copia extra es de $3 por folleto.

REQUISITOS PARA GRADUARSE

P ara que los niños puedan recibir el Sacramento de Prime-ra Comunión requiere un esfuerzo como familia. Los niños

y sus papás han de asistir a clases y al templo constantemente.

Niños Asumiendo que la conducta del niño ha sido buena, también hay que llenar los siguientes requisitos:

1. No exceder mas de dos (2) faltas injustificadas y dos (2) justificadas de clase. Tratar de no faltar a Misa los do-mingos, solo hay un limite de cuatro (4) al años.

2. Cumplir con las tareas y compromisos de su clase bajo la tutela de su catequista.

3. El niño deberá de participar en un retiro anual por año. 4. El estudiante debe de pasar los siguientes exámenes:

En relación a las enseñanzas del libro de texto. Oraciones básicas y enseñanzas básicas de la fe. Saber el orden de la Santa Misa.

Papás Los padres, en particular los que son Católicos, deben de asistir a seis (6) clases de “Formación en la Fe” (Padres); los días y las fechas serán dadas a conocer mas adelante. Todo esto en adi-ción con las reuniones para la preparación para la Primera Co-munión de sus hijos (1° y 2ª año).

FOTOS Y VIDEO EN LA MISA DE LA PRIMERA COMUNIÓN

N uestra oficina de Catecismo tiene un acuerdo con fotógra-fos profesionales. Por esta razón no se permitirán fotos ni

video en el día de la ceremonia; información e instrucciones se-rán dadas mas delante. La familia podrá ordenar las fotos o paquetes directamente con ellos (cuota separada de nuestro programa).

CUANDO LOS PADRES ESTÁN SEPARADOS O DIVORCIADOS

C uando los padres del niño están bajo circunstancias de separación o divorcio, ha de especificarse quien tiene la

La fa-milia es responsable de la formación en la fe del niño.

El no llenar los requisitos o no seguir los lineamientos de acuerdo a este folleto podrían impedirá a su hijo o hija recibir la Primera Comunión.
