SCIENTIFIC AIMS

The Commission for Water Sustainability of the International Geographical Union (IGU) aims to interpret “sustainability” in the widest possible sense, including the sustainability of the environment in the face of water development work as well as the sustainability of water resources. It aims to foster links between the human and physical aspects of water management, with specific concern for the sustainability of water resources and for the impacts of water management on the environment. In the past 25 years the Commission held regular international conferences in different parts of the world in order to encourage scientific research and development of sustainable water resources practices as well as to bring together researchers from hosting and surrounding countries.

Conference subthemes:

1) Climate change and water availability.

2) Water sustainability in the Mediterranean.

3) Water sustainability and modeling in karst regions.

4) Transboundary water resources management.

5) Human interventions into the hydrological cycle - threats to the sustainability.

6) Water quality problems and solutions.

7) GIS and cartography in hydrological research and education.

CONFERENCE VENUE, DATE AND TIME

The conference will be held at the Centre for Advanced Academic Studies (CAAS) in Dubrovnik from 24th to 28th of August 2014. CAAS was founded by the University of Zagreb as a public academic institution for international scientific programmes and postgraduate studies. It is located in close proximity to the old part of the walled City, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the Conference, Dubrovnik will host the world known Dubrovnik Summer Festival. For more information about CAAS, please visit http://www.caas.unizg.hr/

In addition, there is a city tax of 7 kunas (around 1 €) per day. Every double room is a twin bed room. The price of accommodation does not include meals. There is a possibility for a breakfast in a café nearby.

There are other possibilities for accommodation in Dubrovnik. Hotel Lero is a three-star budget hotel located a 15 minute walk from the CAAS building. Youth hostel Dubrovnik offers accommodation less than 30 minutes walk from the CAAS residence. Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik is located right across the street from CAAS building.

Important note: Participants not staying in the “CAAS Residence” should organize the accommodation by themselves.
