The first view of serenity in an unlikely place
![Page 3: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Although manmade, still a tranquil image
![Page 4: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
“Yeah, this is the life”
![Page 5: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
A view from the other side…A “window” perhaps?
![Page 6: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
What is the story of C. Haffner’s object?
![Page 7: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Some end with periods while others do not. Why?
![Page 8: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
A massive monument
representing the Duhme Family
![Page 9: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Plenty of room to sit and ponder the engraving, “Because I live ye shall live also”
![Page 10: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Just a massive gravestone?
Or perhaps the lid to the vault
itself…
![Page 11: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
A very intricate “rephrasing” of an
old-world idea
![Page 12: First Exploration of Spring Grove Cemetery](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022052602/559b1b531a28ab41128b46dd/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
An eerie, but beautifully crafted
piece of stone
“The best is yet to be The last of life for which
the first was made”

Two families?

Fascination with mermaids?

BeautyVenus de Milo was
discovered without arms. She was considered the
epitome of female beauty. She has other things in common with Edward’s
mermaid…the Greek-like appeal, with the woven hair
and elegant skin and posture.
Much like sirens, mermaids would sometimes sing to
people and gods and enchant them, distracting them from their work and causing them to walk off the deck or run
their ships aground.Venus de Milo

The LotusLotus Symbol: grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to
bloom with remarkable beauty. At night the
flower closes and sinks underwater, at dawn it rises and opens again.
Untouched by the impurity, lotus symbolizes the purity of heart and mind. The lotus flower
represents long life, health, honor and
good luck. Legends originated in Egypt, and
is used as a Christian symbol today
(creation, rebirth)
