A Message From Pastor Tim

November 2018

ARMISTICE DAY / VETERAN’S DAY

This November we celebrate the 100th anniversary of an important event in American history. If a poll was taken among people thirty years-old and younger, I wonder how many would know that this event even took place? On November 11th at 11:00 am, in the year 1918, the armistice was signed in a railroad car outside of Comiegne France signifying the end of World War 1. In less than one hundred years we have forgotten one of the most important events of the twentieth century. Sure a war raged across Europe beginning in 1914, and millions of people died, and modern warfare was changed forever, but the failure to understand the ramifications of that war led to the nations of the world engaging in another World War only twenty one years later. So what does this have to do with Jesus, Faith, and our Christian walk with the Lord. On the surface perhaps not much, but much like our apathy for World War 1, we seem to have forgotten the roots of our faith. We have forgotten the consequences of the Israelites who abandoned God for other gods and were sent to Babylon in exile. Or have we forgotten what happened to Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5. The husband and wife sold some property and were to give the proceeds to the church that was forming to care for the needy. But instead they held some money back and were struck dead because they lied to God. (Acts 5:1-11). Have we forgotten about the consequences of sin in the lives of those who lived in Noah’s day, or Sodom and Gomorrah? In Noah’s day God destroyed nearly all of the world. In the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, God destroys both cities. Our actions both good and bad have consequences. Lately we have taken to ignore plenty of Biblical teaching, and we allow all sorts of behavior contrary to the will of God to be legal and accept-able by society. These actions have consequences, and one day Jesus Christ will return to gather the faithful to live with Him forever. Fortunately God’s grace is beyond measure and at any moment we can repent for our deeds, words or inactions, and God will forgive us and welcome us back into the Kingdom. The father of the prodigal son did not ignore the son, but instead ran out to meet him and provided a lavish celebration because he came back. Our God wants even more for us. So let’s not forget our history, and on November 11th celebrate Veterans Day and remember the sacrifice these men and women made for us as well as the reason celebrate. And more importantly may we never grow so far from our God that we forget what He did for us by sending His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the price that you and I may have redemption and life. God remembers you. May you never forget God.

God bless, Pastor Tim, Nancy, Ashley and Ian

THE ROCK, THE ROAD, AND THE RABBI CURRENT CLASS

Advent and Christmas Study

Based on her book, The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi, Kathie

Lee Gifford takes you on a journey through the Jewish roots of

Jesus and the ancient paths of Israel in this study. As a com

mitted Christian, and the daughter of a Jewish father, Gifford

has always felt drawn to Israel. Follow her as she hikes the

land with Messianic Jewish Rabbi Jason Sobel, Ray Vander

Laan, and others who are trained in the messianic rabbinical

way---and see Jesus' earthly homeland with new eyes! You'll

learn more about the Rock (Jesus Christ), explore the Road

(Israel), and dig deeper into the Bible with the Rabbi (God's

Word). When she began studying the biblical texts in their

original Hebrew and Greek and hiking the ancient paths of

Israel, Kathie Lee discovered a deeper understanding of the

Bible and of God Himself. Throughout the study, Rabbi Sobel

provides additional insight into the Hebrew language, culture,

and heritage will open your eyes to the Bible like never before.

GOD CAME NEAR: GOD'S PERFECT GIFT

Have you seen the real Jesus - a working man with dirty

fingernails and sweaty brow? The helpless baby, born in a

dirty stable, and totally dependent upon his teenaged

mother? Travel back in time and relive Christ the Son of

God becoming man as God Came Near. In this stunning

work, Max Lucado invites you to comprehend Jesus' hu-

manity through this insightful perspective of Christ's life.

When God came to earth, his first cries were heard not

by powerful rulers but by a lowly peasant girl and a sleepy

carpenter. Max reveals profound spiritual truths through

vivid re-creations of the first Christmas---and engaging

stories about:

Community Opportunity

Here is an opportunity to step out into the

community and share God’s love. With enough

volunteers we can staff the “Resale Shop” on

Thursdays (10 am - 4 pm) to:

1) Raise money for the New Church

2) Interact with the public, outside of the Church

(but we can invite them in.)

(3) Show God’s love and caring ways.

(4) Our responsibilities will mainly be to collect

money — of which we will be splitting the profits;

also to try to help customers feel welcome,

and to find what they might be looking for.

The pricing and arranging will be

taken care of by others.

We need at least two people at the Shop while

open. Hours for Volunteers can be flexible.

Please call Priscilla @ 834-3189 for

more information and / or to volunteer.

Let’s take this opportunity to step forward

to serve our Community and our Church

in several ways! Thank You!

“Be Their Witness”

Wreaths Across America

Honor Our Local Veterans by Sponsoring a Wreath

Once again we would like to remember and honor our Veterans with a wreath for Christmas as a “Thank You” for their service for our community and country. In the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery we have over 2000 local veterans who served as far back as the Civil War. As in the past only the Veterans who have a wreath ordered for them will have a wreath placed on their grave. All other wreaths will be placed at the monument in both the St. Marys Catholic and Presbyterian Cemetery; unless you specify that it is to honor a “Specific Forgotten Vet-

eran”. If donations permit we will honor all those who served in World War II.

Wreaths can be ordered for St. Boniface and Kersey Cemeteries, also Ridgway, Johnson-burg or any place you would like to honor your loved one. Any wreath going out of town must be picked up at the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery unless previous arrangements have

been made. We do deliver Kersey wreaths to the St. Boniface Church.

Ceremonial wreaths laid on December 15th at noon. Please plan to attend to “Thank a Veteran”!!!

Thank You and God Bless You for remembering our Veterans.

Additional Sunday School Teachers / Helper(s) needed

We are in need of additional Sunday School Teachers & Helpers for the 2018 – 2019 term.

We have added an additional class after reviewing the levels and ages of our children. Please prayerfully

consider what you can do to help us in this need. Our children are our greatest treasure. Teaching them

about Jesus is a necessity and you can play an important role in sharing the Light of the World with them.

If you are able to help, call Shawna Grim or Pastor Hoover. You might also speak to one of our current

teachers/helpers. They would be able to share their experiences and answer any questions.

We thank you so much for making this a priority.

CHRISTIAN COUNSELING ASSOCIATES OF WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA

Christian Counseling, in a basic sense, acknowledges that a person’s faith plays a vital role in the healing of emotional or behavioral problems. Therefore, this type of counseling intentionally seeks to make faith a significant part of the “treatment” process.

In whatever problem is faced, Christian Counseling acknowledges that Jesus Christ can powerfully work in our lives to bring about healing and relief. We provide a full range of services to those who need counseling for any individual, marital, or family concern. When desired, psychiatric referrals for medication management are available for those who struggle with more serious emotional problems. Ready to make an appointment?
