First Hotels has developed a corporate design program intended to enhance our corporate visual

identity and enable all brand hotels to speak with one voice. Naturally, this does not imply that our

products should now become uniform. But please note that the design guidelines must be strictly

adhered to. Any deviation must be authorized by the First Hotels Marketing Department.

Please note that this online manual is regularly updated and that all previous printed editions of the

manual are now no longer valid.

If you have any questions regarding the online manual, please do not hesitate to contact First Hotels

Marketing Department. You can submit questions and register tasks under Corporate Support in the

L O G O

The First corporate logo is to be featured on all marketing material and products. In-house publica-

tions and materials do not need to feature the logo. The logo must never be used on carpets, mats,

furniture or shower curtains, etc.

The logo should always be featured in our communication with clients and partners but not be over-

exposed.

The principal logo to be used in all media is the black logo. On dark backgrounds, the negative logo

should be used for visibility.

Colours: 100% black and white.

The logo is primarily to be rendered in black. However, since black backgrounds are often featured in

First Hotels advertising the logo can also be printed in the negative (i.e. white).

If the background is a photo it should be assessed on an individual basis whether or not to use a nega-

tive or positive version of the logo. The main priority is that the logo must stand out graphically. If the

background is more than 70% black then use the negative (i.e. white) version of the logo.

As a feature of our design program the names of the hotels are to be represented in a uniform style.

‘FIRST HOTELS’ is always to be capitalised and rendered in Frutiger Bold. Names of the individual hotel

identities supplement the corporate identity of First Hotels. Please note that individual hotels need au-

T Y P E FA C E

Our primary typeface is Frutiger, which is a classic, reader-friendly typeface. Frutiger must be used consist-

ently across all marketing material issued by First Hotels.

FRUTIGER LIGHT

The Frutiger typeface is featured in different grades. The preferred version at First Hotels is Frutiger Light

for both headings and body text.

FRUTIGER ROMAN

Frutiger Roman can also be used for both headings and body text. Especially with small formats where

the background is black in which case Frutiger Light may be difficult to read. Frutiger Roman can also be

used to highlight certain words in a body text set in Frutiger Light.

FRUTIGER BOLD

Headings in small texts use Frutiger Bold since Frutiger Light may impede legibility.

ARIAL

Arial is only to be used for informational material in PowerPoint and word formats and never on printed

matter.

The primary typeface is Frutiger Light. Headers can be capitalised and written in large-size lettering but

this requires a tracking of 100-150 pt. to ensure brand recognition.

Body text is generally rendered in Frutiger Light but with small-size lettering we use Frutiger Roman.

Frutiger Roman can also be used with subheaders or other emphasised texts or when two languages

are presented alongside each other, in which case one language version is rendered in Roman and the

other in Light. Alternatively, you can render one language in italic.

Frutiger Bold is not generally used for body text but can be used with chapter headers.

PERFECT SYMMETRY

As shown in the examples the placement of the text is defined in relation to the logo. The distance be-

tween the text and logo equals that of the width of the logo.

The right-hand margin of a text must always be in line with the right-hand edge of the logo.

SPACE

with large formats (as in the example ‘First is First, Again’) the text should have more space around it.

Here the distance between text and logo is twice that of the width of the logo.

The typeface Eidetic Neo is only used for corporate presentations. The typeface has been adopted to

ensure a clear distinction between corporate and marketing material. It is therefore not permitted to use

this typeface in promotional products for individual hotels.

The MAM image bank contains a collection of images that can be used by all hotels.

If you don’t find what you are looking for in the MAM image bank, please feel free to contact First Hotels

Marketing for guidelines and photographer recommendations.

we recommend that images used in hotel presentations should depict rooms and environments in full

(and not merely in detail). These images should avoid showing people and convey an honest image of the

hotel (‘what you see is what you get’).

The images used in other promotional publications should emphasise experience. They should be un-

derstated and speak to the imagination. Such photos may show details or situations involving people.

All new images must be approved by the Marketing Department. For further information and user

All marketing and in-house publications are to be made with high-grade uncoated MultiDesign paper sup-

plied by Papyrus. The hue is ‘white’ and the surface ‘Original’.

MultiDesign paper is available in 12 different weight grades. Choose a grade that suits the purpose

yet is also cost-conscious.

The following principles should guide all copywriting of marketing material:

e.g. In-room directories, brochures, posters, and packaging.

Standard in-room directories (22x22 cm) can be ordered from the Marketing Department, which

assists hotels in designing user-friendly layouts. The hotels are individually responsible for providing

and updating the text content, although the Marketing Department can assist hotels with proof-

reading and translation. You can submit questions and register tasks under Corporate Support in the

Branding menu.

Contact the Marketing Department when in need of printed material to be used in the re-branding

of individual hotel restaurants, bars or cafés. First Hotels has adopted design guidelines regarding

typeface and layout of menu cards, etc. Individual designs can be customised with reference to

these standards.

Menu folders may bee developed on which individual hotels can feature their own logo and/or

choice of graphical design.

Logos of individual hotels are not to be printed on in-house standard material. However, the name

and address of the hotel is to be featured and must do so in compliance with First Hotels design

guidelines.

Promotional material used outside the hotel, such as flyers, must feature the First logo.

The Klavika typeface is used in the visual identity for some restaurants. This typeface may be used

in light and medium versions as well as in lower and upper cases.

In menu cards and other such material the Klavika typeface can be used for headings but body texts

must be featured in Frutiger as with other First Hotels’ material.

All First Hotels promotional campaigns are designed by the Marketing Department in association

with the corporate management. The success of the campaigns nevertheless depends on the dedi-

cated commitment of individual hotels. All hotels are therefore required to actively promote the

official campaigns.

Corporate advertising aims at promoting the First brand and the products and services provided by

First Hotels.

Since hotels are authorised to source advertising material locally it is important that such material

complies with the design guidelines regarding the placement of the logo, choice of typeface, style

of imagery, and the content of the text.

The imagery is to project a sense of calm and must allow the text to stand out clearly. If this is

difficult to achieve on a given background then you can alternatively use a black or white band at

the foot of the image. See examples on the left that show a variety of different layout options that

feature both text and imagery. Large headers are recommended as eye-catchers. Please ensure that

www.firsthotels.com / www.firsthotels.se / www.firsthotels.dk / www.firsthotels.no is clearly stated

as the sender.

The lettering and elephant logo feature as individual elements made of 20 mm aluminium and sup-

ported by a stay. wall mounted using the stay.

The logo is either spray painted with high-gloss white RAL 9010 or high-gloss black depending on

background colour. Depending on architectural design, the sign can also be made of high-polished

stainless steel or brass, which can also be rendered with a brown-washed appearance.

opening that allows it to be fitted internally with fluorescent tubes to illuminate the menu card. Fur-

thermore, there is a recess for a sheet of glass or acrylic plate.
